Since I've had the afternoon off work, I've been trying to put some for of back-story together for my Guard army, and the system they are from. Having never written fluff before, and not been back in the hobby long, there is a whole load of stuff that I do not know, so if I have written something that does not make sense or is not possible, then please let me know so I can change it! C&C welcome, but please be gentle...
So far this is what I have:
The Grunpfeil system is a minor system in the Solar Segmentum. Grunpfeil is located between the major systems of Jopall and Ruis, and acted as a stop-off point for the forces of the imperium during three Great Wars for Armageddon.
During the most recent third war for Armageddon, the Grunpfeil system saw some of its most fierce fighting, and the majority of the system was levelled, leaving behind a barren, acrid wasteland.
From this wasteland, the Grunpfeil armies have risen again, absorbing every man old enough, and able enough to fight. Huge factories have sprung from the rubble, producing en-mass, everything the forces need to fight, and defend the system from the ever-present threat of Ork invasion.
Although the forces are rebuilding, and the population increasing, the heavy bombardment has left an atmosphere unsuitable for humans, as such the population must wear breathing apparatus in order to survive, a trait carried through to the armed forces. Although survivable for short periods of time, the atmosphere is so thick and acidic that only tougher respiratory systems can cope, something shown by the small Ogryn population throughout the worlds.
Although the Grunpfeil population see little of the high-tech weaponry the imperium holds, the systems forces are armed enough to fight, and hold on their own. The systems forge world produces a range of vehicles, including Leman Russ Battle Tanks, Chimera Transports, Hellhound Tanks, Basilisk Artillery Tanks, and Sentinel Walkers. It also produces the armaments both for these vehicles, and for the systems military personal, as well as the ships used by the systems navy.
The Grunpfeil system is made up of 9 worlds ranging greatly in size, from Grunpfeil 8, a small, inhospitable planet used only for mining the gasses needed to power the great factories, through to Grunpfeil 4, a huge Hive World that supplies the Grunpfeil forces with millions of men to fill its ranks.
Other planets to note include Grunpfeil 1, home to the systems government and leaders, Grunpfeil 7, a forge world which is used to produce the ships, tanks and armaments for the systems forces, and Grunpfeil 2, a world used primarily for the production of food for the hive world, as its billions of people consume more food than is possible to produce in-situ.
Three of the systems planets are home to its armed forces. These are Grunpfeil 5, Grunpfeil 3, and Grunpfeil 6. All training takes place on these planets, with the men shipped in from the hive world once the initial processes have been completed.
Grunpfeil 5 is home to the systems Guard force, including its men and tank platoons. Grunpfeil 5 is the biggest of the three forces, using only the fittest men to fill its ranks. Grunpfeil 3 is home to the systems navy, and is the smallest of the three forces. Both men and women are used on the world, and help to pilot the systems ships, both within the system, and for carrying troops and armaments to battlefields in other systems.
The third force is the Planetary Defence Force, also known as the PDF, which helps to both defend the system from outside attackers, and police within the system. This is where the majority of people end their careers once they have completed their time in main planetary force. The main bulk of the PDF is made up of men who for one reason or another, cannot fight with the main military regiments. Although the PDF do not see as much frontline action as the main armed regiments, they act as a secondary ‘reserve’ force should they be needed for battle.
As stated above, this is the first time I've written something 40k-related, and one of the few times I have written something at all. I'll put the rest up when I get round to writing it...
I notice someone has given the thread five stars, but not said what they like and dislike about it. Any C&C would be welcome, good and bad, so I can try and finish it off! Is the story feasible?
Cheers for your help guys!
