Im hoping to make a successor chapter to the salamanders that uses all bikes, and i would be converting them to be riding lizards... dont know yet if this would work, currently it's just an idea im tossing around, but i like the looks of the new dark elf cold ones, i would be converting bikers to be riding them... the only problem would be if the proportions were off, and even if they are and I am forced to go with them riding actual bikes (sigh) i would still have my leader's riding a carnosaur or a non-GW dragon(or both, i have multiple HQ in a chapter after all)
Anyway the reason i am posting this is to ask if people think this is a cool idea, or one that i could make flufftastic, i ran into a few old posts about the salamanders possibly making a successor chapter by cloning the geneseed specimen that they sent to terra, so im using that excuse i think, now i need a reason for them to use all bikes... Im no expert on why different chapters are divergent from the codex astartes, so if someone could help who has more knowledge it would e cool. If they might change their tactics based on available resources during a crusade or other circumstances that forced them to use bikes i would think up a story about that, but im not sure if that would work because marines are so inflexible in their traditions.
Also any help with names for my chaplain, librarian, and chapter master would be greatly apreciated, as i am horrible at coming up with names. the chaplain is probably going to be riding the carnosaur, and the chapter master will be riding the dragon because i am using the ravenwing rules for all of this and the chapter master will use the rules of sammael, i figure it would be cool to say the plasma cannon on his jetbike is the dragon spitting a ball of fire...
any help would be appreciated, hoping this idea isnt totally unfluffy because i like my armies to be fluffy and i think this would be a fun conversion project.
Very spiffy idea.
Fluff wouldn't be too difficult, even though there isn't a lot of Salamander fluff to work with compared to other Chapters. It could be that the Successors' homeworld held special reverence for their "native reptiles", more so than the original Legion for their namesake.
"It takes a vast amount of self control to be this dangerous."
---Ogvai Ogvai Helmshrot, Jarl of Tra, VI Legion Astartes
Hmm... The idea for the reverence of native fauna is legit. My own chapter is somewhat similar, they have cold-one-esque lizards that roam the surface of their planet, and I use the "hunting beast" rules from WD to represent them.
I'd say that your chapter could have been a crusading force that originally resented bikes. But perhaps they came into contact with xenos or an army that made extensive use of cavalry and they needed something to keep up. As they didn't have bikes, some of their more elite close-combat veterans were quickly trained by the native PDF or primitive humans, to ride the beasts. While initially the riders would have been ungainly and casualties would have still been high, it may have made a difference. Then, in respect for the locals who helped them beat their foes, or because this planet held their key source of cavalry, they chose to settle down there.
Really, the idea of doing this is not too outlandish. The original salamanders list in the old Armageddon codex, along with the debut of the Black Templars. The Salamanders were only allowed 1 of each fast attack choice, because they were so difficult to train on their high gravity world. Salamanders are also less aloof than normal marines. They live amongst the local population, serving as tribal leaders or council, and keeping ties to their local heritage. It could be possible in the Iron Dragons, for a natively recruited marine to return and live amongst his family once more. GW would probably deny that by now, since their views on marines are becoming more strict.
Using the dragon might be risky though. Remember that the new edition uses literal LOS, so a massive dragon leave a much bigger target than a tiny biker. It also has a larger footprint, meaning it's easier to hit with templates, and more models can get directly into base-base with it.
That sounds like a cool idea. Space marines riding giant lizards would be very cool. I think you can do it as nobody will mind as long as the rules are the same a the lizard riding Marines are about the same size as normal bikers. You could even try to do winged reptiles as Land speeders. Like this guy from Dino riders. http://www.toyarchive.com/STAForSale...donBoxed1a.jpg
I think Lizardmen have some flying critters.
thanks for the ideas, that whole learning it from the natives idea was one i had considered, because i know that the salamanders were already not big fast attack users because of the gravity.
as for the dragon, i already thought about the huge footprint and problems involved with it, but i am not an extremely competitive player, my army lists are usually good with my other armies and i win alot with them so i wanted this army more to just be a cool-looking one rather than a competitive one. I will probably make a normal-sized figure to use as a leader if ever i wanted to play to win, but im not overly worried about it.
also a dragon would look cool on the imperium's side in an apocalypse game
a thought just occurred... if i was to make a properly sized substitute for my leaders would this be a GW tournament legal army? I dont really ever play in them, but i was thinking of doing so soon with my orcs, and so im just wondering if lizards instead of bikes would make them illegal... i wouldnt really care, just curious.
thanks alot for the help, i will write a backstory when i get some free time and post it here for comments/criticizm
So long as you are using GW models, there is nothing illegal about it. Now, whether or not they would let you through the door at a tourney is entirely up to how much a jerk the organizers are. I know at my local RT, nobody cares what you use. But, there are rules for hunting beasts and ridden monsters, mentioned in my first post- and on that note, some of the more irritating redshirts might bar your entry. What I'd do, is simply pitch the idea to them before you sign up. If they say it's a go, then go with it. Otherwise, I'd whip out the orks, or tell them to stuff it and spend your money someplace else.
thats a sick idea, what i reckon would be cool is if the dragon had, at the very least, extra bits of armour. and maybe the rider (good name is Bethuel) could be holding some chains connected to the beast's mouth to control it. or the rider could be a librarian and his psychic abilities are the only thing controling his mount....
Yea if I ever did go to a tourney hardcore enough to bar me entry for this id prolly bring my orcs anyway(i love having 150 boyz AND a bunch of shiny cars and things, the new cheaper boyz are great), I was just curious.
And yea I think im gunna greenstuff something together to be reigns for the dragon, and maybe write something into the fluff about the dragon and rider having a psychich linkish thing so that the librarian rider can like control him, and thats how the dragon knows who to breathe fire and stuff. I think im going to use a heavily converted high-elf dragon for my leader, a carnosaur for my chaplain, and the new Dark Elf Cold Ones for the rest of the army.
