my knowledge on fluff is shocking, but is it possible for one of the lost primarchs to have been swept away by warp storms like all the others but have been swept out of the galaxy where he mutated to become the hivemind?
could it explain why the tyrant guard have black carapaces? (i know there is already the theory that the nids absorbed some of the spacemarine DNA. this is just an alternative idea.)
this is probably one of the stupidest ideas you've ever heard, but anyways what do you guys reckon?
Actually this isn't that insane of an idea. I have heard rumours of one of the lost C'tan being the hive mind. Course the level of mutation to turn a Primarch into the Hive Mind must of been phnomanal. Primarchs are tough as nails, both mentally and physically. Something absolutely tragic must of happened to of broken the Primarch down.
Now, maybe it is possible that the primarch died in the warp storms, but his soul, which was away from the milky way at that point and thus away from the perils of the Chaos Gods, survived. Possibly his soul bound together with that of some primitive hive like organisms on the original 'Nid planet.

I don't think a Primarch could be the Hive mind. The Tyranids/Hive mind are pure hunger. This has little to do with a Primarch. Also a Primarch is too small to ever achieve becoming something like the Hive mind. It would not be a case of a Primarch being broken down, it would be a case of elevating him beyond all the others. Like making a common house cat into the Emperor. Also where would all the matter to make the Hive fleets come from etc. Not to mention all the bio-tech. The bio-tech Tyranids use is way beyond anybody else's bio-tech and a Primarch or a C'tan no matter how great won't be able to just pull it out of a hat.
A C'tan is rumoured to be the Hive mind because people get the ideas of C'tan wanting to feed and Tyranids wanting to feed confused. C'tan feed out of a sense of gluttony. They like the taste of the energy in living things which is why they go for it. The C'tan could happily (unhappily, stars are tasteless to the C'tan) feed from stars for as long as they exist and nobody would bother them or quite likely not even know they were there. Tyranids don't feed out a desire for gluttony but to survive. A C'tan knows it is killing and gets sick pleasure out of it. The C'tan understand mortality, war and finally death. Tyranids have no concept of death the way we or C'tan do as they have no sense of self.
The C'tan also make war out of ego, they want to rule and believe they have the right to do so. This makes C'tan more like us than Tyranids as C'tan, however powerful and ancient have a sense of self, Tyranids and the Hive mind have no concept of self. A Prmarch or a C'tan would have to go a long way to even think like Tyranid but this would not in any way put them on the path to becoming something like the Tyranid race. Infact they would just be an imbecile with super powers. C'tan are also unable to manipulate psychic energy in any way. Psychic energy is also very harmful to them and possibly the only thing that can kill a C'tan other than another of it's own kind. The Hive mind is made of psychic energy and basically a vast, shapeless warp-predator. The complete opposite of a C'tan.
The basic difference between the Tyranids and the C'tan is that C'tan don't have to do any of the nasty things that they do, they could get by without doing it. Of course the C'tan aren't the only beings to do nasty things out of greed and a lust for power. However the C'tan get a choice in the matter. Tyranids and the Hive mind have no choice in what they do. Tyranids will consume as they do this to survive, it is how they survive. The Tyranids are a single mass of countless trillions of cells. The whole entity acts to consume and increase in size. Viewed on a galactic scale the Tyranids are a giant blob like a single celled organism that absorbs all in it's path and it' motivation is the same = consume expand. C'tan and Primarchs have far more complicated, selfish and ego-driven motives.

You can have the Primarch be absorbed into the hive, with the sole exception that instead of just his DNA being absorbed onto the hive it also absorbed a large part of His intellect like the capability to learn and react at a much faster rate than just an instinctive level which is what i pressume that the Nids were at at the early stages of evolution, you can also take it one step further and say that this is why the Nids were finally able to attain space travel.
Or the nids could be the creation of a primarch gone mad and that he created the nids to be companions on the world that he lived on, which he ventually became so involved with that he simpaly created a blank hive mind then transferred his psych over to the blank mind and has since lorded over the hive as the ultamite and slowly the nids hunger statrted to become his own till all that was left was his abbility to adapt and survive.
sorry if this sounds stupid. just one opinion
Tyranids could absord Primarch DNA and they have after a fashion by absorbing Space marine DNA. It isn't a case of Tyranids can't create intellect like us they just have no need to. If Tyranids created an idividual who thought like us they would lose all of thier advantages. The Tyranids gain huge advantages by taking a completely different approach to solving problems. This is also what makes them alien and nasty.
If they thought like us they would not be any use as much of our intellect comes from how we are raised and taught. Tyranids have nothing of knowledge as we would se it to teach anyone. A Primarch is a product of nurture where Tyranids are product of nature. I don't really see how a Primarch can just pull the hive fleets out of a hat, where would he get all the materials from? Also a Primarch would be as likely to know how to cook up Tyranid bio-tech as a Tyranid would be likely to just sit down and make a lascannon out of a hair dryer.
thnx for the feedback guys!
the idea came upon me once when i read a passage about the lost primarchs and it sed somthin like: their were once 20 statues but the emperor had 2 removed because he felt a really deep shame and guilt.
so i thought 'what would the emperor feel most ashamed of?' my answer was that he had inadvertently created man's worst problem, the Tyranids.
but it turns out that both the primarchs were found and took control of their respective legions, so that rules out my first idea =(
leech, you are completely right. after i thought it over a bit it makes no sense that a individually thinking primarch should suddenly turning into mindless creature intent on devouring the entire universe!!
