Just been thinking up ideas for a nid fleet, and as my usual thoughts go it just got more and more complex as I went on, so it probably makes no sense what so ever now but might aswell make a thread on here about it so people can comment and give ideas.
Hive Fleet Diclonius
Colours: Dark brown 'soft skin', greenish-blue chitin plating, bone coloured claws and teeth and pink markings visible on plating of larger creatures.
Unique abilities: Ambush attacks, they hide and disguise themselves as flora or part of the landscape before uncurling to show their true forms, some creatures also seen to be effected by a psychic camoflauge which helps them blend into the environment.
Unique creature: Pyrodesix - Name derived from a type of squid, the Mastigoteuthis Pyrodes, due to its similarities and resemblences in shape and form. Immobile creature first seen in Hivefleet Diclonius, fired directly into the planet surface from orbit where it burrows deep into the ground before rapidly speeding up the process of tyranid plant growth. It also changes the planet surface into a highly corrosive swamp which acts as a fertiliser for the tyranid flora and fauna and allows the tyranids to use the landscape created for ambush attacks and annihalation of prey within an environment in which the organisms are adapted to. Also acts as a stable synapse link for tyranid organisms within a significant distance of its location.
Creatures seen within force: Gargoyle, Ravener, Trygon, Ripper, Warrior, Hive Tyrant, Zoanthrope, Carnifex, Hormagaunt, Termagant, Lictor. Many of these creatures were seen in previously unencountered species patterns adapted to the environment, including aquatic creatures with a similar resemblance to the squid family originally seen on Earth many thousands of years ago.
First Encounter Report from an Imperial Fist chapter:
~~#Day 0 - Before landing#~~
Similar attack pattern to Kraken, but much more widespread despite not being much larger. It effectively sends out small fleets consisting of an unnaturally small cluster of organisms to each planet to come under attack, but this allows the fleet to spread its entire attack radius across a massive area, disrupting the focus of the imperium's counterattacks due to the sheer size of the effect. At first, the small size of each of the attacking forces was considered strange by the imperium, wondering how such sized armies could conquer an entire planet even with minimal defenses, but the true power of these attacking groups was not realised until many planets began to fall within a much shorter timespan than has been seen before from previous hivefleets.
~~#Day 1 - The growth ensues#~~
Upon a direct attack by a force of Imperial Fists to defend one of the major planets under attack within the system, they experienced a strange situation. The tyranid assault had only just begun when they landed and set up positions, yet the plant growth was already spreading across a much larger area than anticipated. Within a day, the plant growth had expanded from the two initial tyranid assault locations to cover over half of the planet with strange flora and plant life.
~~#Day 2 - Initial assault#~~
An elite force of Imperial Fist Veterans were sent to investigate the growths, and found that not only had the forest areas grown especially fast, but within the forest and a substantial distance beyond the edge of the plant life had been changed into a corrosive swamp-like expanse. Such effects had never been seen before even in the later stages of an invasion, nor had the vegetation taken over such a large area in such a short time. A counterattack was launched on the southern forest, attempting to find the cause of this, but this was the last seen of the company. The visuals recieved from the time of the counterattack to last contact show distinctive behaviour by tyranid lifeforms which has not been seen before, including ambush tactics, effective camoflaging of certain species and mutants adapted to the swampy landscapes caused by the erratic growth of the tyranid flora and fauna. Many clips show attacks by creatures believed to be aquatic variations of the known tyranid lifeforms, utilising special mutations to allow fast underwater movement and immunity to the corrosive liquids and chemicals found within the swamps. Many sightings were also seen of large bladed tendrils emerging from the swamps and attacking troops before retracting underwater again, only to emerge again from different locations. This was later discovered to be an extremely small portion of a much, much larger tyranid lifeform not seen before, which appears to be unique to this hivefleet. The final visuals of the squads sent into the forests show a large flower-like biomass near the centre of the forest, which appears to actually be the lower body, abdomen, limbs and tail of an extremely large tyranid lifeform.
~~#Day 3 - Annihalation and inspection of the Pyrodesix#~~
After contact was lost with the squads sent in to the forest, a secondary larger attack force was sent to exterminate whatever this new creature was, and to destroy any signs of life they could find. This attack was a success, although the remains of the first force were never found. Upon analysing of the creature found, it appears to have been launched directly from the orbiting hive ships into the planets surface, in which it burrows downwards until the head and upper body are completely beneath the surface. Its abnormally large and disproportionate head is extremely well armoured by thick chitin and consists of a maw full of feeder tendrils, grown to an amazing size which spread out and extend across the planets surface, burrowing further outwards and releasing chemicals and bioacids into the ground itself, effectively melting the surface into the swamplike state present. This swamp material acts like a hyperfertiliser for the tyranid flora and fauna, which thus causes the rapid spread of plants across the surface. It appears that any non-tyranid biomatter which enters these swamps is digested, rather than corroded, and is absorbed by the central organism allowing it to grow further. It appears also that the tendrils have adapted to also have smaller, thinner tendrils extending out at regular intervals along their length, which are presumed to be the bladed tentacles seen striking out of the waters at nearby prey, acting as a form of defense and offense. These also get more regular nearer the central organism, making it ever more dangerous to get close to it. Above the surface however, it has its own forms of defense. The entire lower body from the ground upwards to where the tail begins is covered in armoured plates capable of firing spines, similar to the spineback mutations seen on carnifexes but on a much larger scale. It also has 6 'limbs' in similar fashion to other tyranid creatures, each of which take the form and shape of giant scything talons rising above the spine banks, capable of attacking anything within a huge radius around the central body with lethal force. It is presumed that the creature is also capable of psychic capability, as it cloaks its entire body in a warp field similar to those seen projected by hive tyrants and zoanthropes, aswell as a synapse power spreading out a significant distance from the central body, allowing it to call nearby troops to its aid if the help is needed. It is presumed it uses a sense of vibration in the ground to sense nearby enemies as it has been seen to lash out at objects thrown near it. It appears that for every planet attacked by these small fleets, two of these huge organisms are thrown down onto the surface a significant distance apart, allowing the forests to spread rapidly across the entire planet, with the tyranids using the cover of the plants to launch attacks and ambushes, minimising losses and thus allowing minimal biomass to be used for each attack.
~~#Days 4 to present day - Conclusion of information#~~
This is presumed to be the reason why the hive fleet has been able to spread itself so wide and still become a serious threat. The code name of Diclonius was given to the fleet due to the use of the two huge organisms, which when impaled within the planets surface have a resemblance to large protrusions from the surface, and as such Diclonius seemed appropriate as it effectively means "two sprout". Although the planet was cleansed by the Imperial Fist squads on the planet surface, it is known that there are thousands more such fleets spread across a massive area, overwhelming the entire system at a rapid pace with no focus point available for defenses to be set up.
Any opinions/corrections/complaints about unfluffyness/suggestions accepted. I have tried to keep it as fluffy as possible but there may be a few things which could cause people to go "no way! that's unfluffy!". There also might be a couple of mistakes but I think I cleared them all up.
I like it, I actually like it alot. Very fluffy, unique and well thought out. Everything you said makes sense and is certainly better than any Tyranid fleet GW can come up with. Your idea also shows how the Tyranids not only evolve physically but they're tactics become more and more effective and they can do it by using less and less biomass.
I would love for you to expand on this idea.
I didn't read the BoT, but everything before it was cool.
Good vocabulary useage, unique ideas, interesting use of real-life species, generally all round awesomeness, adds up to...
p.s if you need help on anything im just here lol (although i doubt i can help, seeing as you came up with that... )
Interesting. it follows the Nid formula correctly. I like it. Would be an awesome campaign objective too.

Glad you liked my ideas and deemed them appropriate, and thanks to those who repped me =). Not sure where I'm going to go with this as I will shortly be heading off to university and will likely have little time to work on modelling =(. I'll see what I can do though ^.^.
