He felt that religion was just holding mankind back, and one of the things conquered worlds in the great crusade had to do was renounce all religion.
Well... That seems kinda stupid to me..

I'm not a big fan of a lot of the stuff the BL has produced over the years, much less sabertooth. I can't really argue, I guess, since it's written down, but..

If the Emperor hated religion, why did he cover his troops and marines with religious iconography. Why did he encourage them to accord special significance to certain symbols (particularly the aquilla?) Why did his marines name their morale officers 'chaplains' and model their organization after fighting monastic orders? Why did he teach humans that it was their destiny to rule the galaxy and subjugate or destroy all nonhuman life? Why was Imperial archetecture and design still modeled on gothic cathedrals? Why did he name chaos as evil and forbid humans from interacting with it?

Seriously.. When you have this dude claiming to be the Saviour of Humanity, does it matter if he's a god or not? The Imperial Cult worships, and always has worshipped, humanity.. all the changed is that the Emperor became a sort of figurehead for that.

It's the Inquisitor rulebook, and it's not quite that they don't want to wake him up, but that noone knows how the Golden Throne actually works, and some people don't want to even contemplate the idea because the slightest mistake could kill the Emperor and destroy humanity.

I don't see how the Emperor could come back to life, as he's basically a rotting corpse, but they could maybe put him in some sort of giant dreadnought, or maybe even a specially built Titan. Now that would be a cool model.

Even if he didn't want to, I want to worship him for single-handed doing the one thing never before completed in history: unite mankind. And he did it the only way possible: blood shed!

And he'll be back. Just you wait heretics/traitors/xenos

Thematically its worth reading the 'Penultimate Truth' by Phillip K. Dick, which is an awesome book in its own right but in addition an analogy can be made between two of the characters in that book and the WH40K universe. One character representing the Emperor as in the Golden Throne, The other if he ever came back to 'unify' mankind.

It finally convinced me that the Emperor is probably one of the nastiest villains in Science Fiction. In fact he was probably more evil during the Great Crusade than he is now.
