Default Vereor Nox

Using this thread as a fluff repository for my Night Lords. Needing some inspiration to get me started. So what I'm thinking to start off. My warband's name. Vereor Nox (Night Fear, I think). Now, this will be a warband entirely based on causing fear. As is fitting for night lords. So, what I would like is if anyone has any cool ideas for my night lords. I have a few lined out.

Their home planet is on an abandoned industrial world, where they maintain a base of operations.

They aren't afraid to enter daemonic pacts.

They like to use sudden shock tactics in battle, and have many deep striking units, dreadclaws, terminators, furies, raptors etc.

They have a small group of obliterators maintaining their home planet.

Now if anyone has any cool ideas then feel free. Everything is welcome. I will put stuff up as I think of it, prepare for some literature

Thanks

I think you have a good start for the bare bones of your background. What I suggest is that you build on what you have here. Once you have built on it you will see where you need some new info and where gaps may need to be filled. You have them based on an abandoned industrial world. Why was the world abandoned? A plague, heresy, aliens, your Nightlords or some kind of mystery. Deciding what happened to the planets inhabitants may help as you can say it is something spooky or scary to help beef up your Nightlords fear thing.

Also what does the planet look like. It is industrial but that just means from the point of view of the Imperium it fills and industrial role in the Imperial economy. For example where I live is view as industrialised but there are loads of plants and finding remains from olden or even ancient times isn't that hard. The planet may have large unexplored or rarely visited areas. These areas could be spooky forests or swamps, mountains with ancient, pre-Imperial standing stones. Consider weather too, how the weather is greatly affects how people will imagine your world. Wet and rainy could be more dreary and dark. It could be really hot or all covered in ice.

You should try to imagine how this planet would look if someone came to visit it. Like in Aliens when they land the dropship they first fly over the atmosphere processor. It is big, dark and generally unfriendly looking. In the previous film Alien the same planet looks completely inhospitable. Or in Pitch black the planet looks like a huge flat dessert as they crash on it. All of these films used the first sight of the planet to set the feel of what was to come. You should try to do the same thing. Also where is your planet? Is it a moon or a huge world that sticks out. Where is it located? Hidden deep in Imperial space or in uncharted wilderness space, or maybe near the eye of terror.

Thanks a lot, this is just the kind of post I needed. It makes me think about what I want. Rep.

The world abandoned. Hmm I don't know. I will leave that open, and maybe think about why later. I know it has been abandoned for some time, and it has a lot of technology and large abandoned factories. Warehouses. High rafters and darkness. Think that big building in I am Legend where the dog runs in. Like that.

Industrial like a munitions world. Like I said lots of factories and cities. Some in ruins due to it being left abandoned so long.

Daylight, I am thinking a 16 hour pitch black, 6 hours twilight, and 2 hours daylight. Weather, think something like britain. Rain the occasional sun but still cold.

I'm thinking a rather medium sized planet, looking dark from space due to the fact most of the planet is in darkness and ruins. It will be situated off away from terra. But still close to imperial space. So they can go in and get supplies.

Thanks, this gives me stuff to think about. I'm going to think about the planets history, anyone got any ideas?

Thanks Leech

You could think about population. Slaves that have been brought in by the Nightlords or the previous owners of the planet who have been subjugated. And or there could be crazy mutant and savages. These people could be used as a labour force as well as new recruits. There point of view about the Nightlords in charge will help give a perspective on who your Nightlords are instead of the fear, terror aspect of your force forming in a vacuum. You could have some fun by trying to draw a map of the world your Nightlords rule. Draw it the same way as a map of the world is drawn. You can put continents, islands and oceans where you want. You can also do things like identify what is where. Mark out areas as having industrial ruins, areas that may be wilderness, mass graves etc. Also you can point out where your Nightlords live on the planet as they probably have fortresses, castles etc.

Think about a name for your world. Also who is in charge of your Nightlords and his history. How he got to be in charge and how secure his position is. Such as he may be the idolised boss or constantly having to deal with plots and schemes to overthrow him. Also your Nighlords point of view about everybody else. Do they like other Chaos marines or are they indifferent, hate them as pathetic lackeys of the Chaos gods with no proper sense of ambition? Also try to think who thier arch nemesis may be. My Tyranid Hive fleet has fought and beaten Dark angels plenty of times. Because of this I have Dark angels being the enemy of my Hive and I often (not always) painted Space marine helmets on their bases as Dark angel ones. You could try to identify who your Nightlords have a problem with, who you will fight the most.

Few more ideas. Tomorrow if I have some spare time, I will start writing properly.

Ideas:

My warband is dwindling. They're not recruiting. Having some form of curse on them, meaning that for each new member they bring on they lose two more. So they can never grow in size. As such they are trying to survive. However allies aren't afflicted by this.

So, ideas behind this: Perhaps they crossed some powerful Tzeentchian? Or aggrivated one of the Chaos Gods. I know this sounds Slaaneshi, but I don't want him associated with my Night Lords (I already do Emperors Children, had enough of Slaanesh when they made 50% of my army unusable). Ideas for this are welcome.

Because of this, they are using any means necessary, and the reason they picked this abandoned world is because it is very far out of common imperial routes. However they are currently being hunted by the Inquisition. Reasons: Mass genocide. Any means necessary includes striking alliances with other warbands, obliterator cults, and even resorting to daemonic pacts, and the use of demons. Anything to survive. The second in command is now a Daemon Prince. However, the Leader of my Warband has declined immortality. As it makes it harder for him to go unseen.

As to why the world is unpopulated. During the Horus Heresy, the world was a muinitions base for the Imperials. However, Konrad swiftly changed that. And it was then left. And has been in ruins, until 34k. When it was then repopulated by Imperials. However. It was engulfed in warpstorms and has only recently emerged. Completely unpopulated. The Obliterators are investigating many demonic sites in the centre of the ruins of what was the base of Imperial operations.

As to location, im thinking somewhere near the Tau Empire. Thoughts on that?

Hell, thoughts on everything. Thanks in advance

Possibly Formed by a small Group of Marines that fell to Chaos after (drum roll)... Damocles Gulf Wars. A really major war against the Tau where the Marines, growing weak against the Tau, asked Chaos for strength, and got really, really screwed up. Maybe even they asked only Tzeentch for help, which offended maybe, Nurgle, who hates Tzeentch, or possibly any of the other gods.

If you haven't I strongly recommend reading "Lord of the Night" - fun read overall, and great for Night Lord players.

And in Latin: (just some thoughts)

Terror = formidonis, formidilosis

(I think terror would be a little cooler)

If they have some kind of curse on them you could have that they gained or thought they would gain some kind of advantage. Living forever, revenge against somebody normally out of reach etc. Whatever the reason is it would probably be fluff. It could be some kind of ironic, nasty reward they demanded and was granted in a very nasty way. Like king Midas of ancient Greece. He wanted the power to turn anything he touched to gold so he could get rich. He got his wish but everything turned to gold, his food, family etc and this clearly caused lots of problems for him. You can't eat gold and as such will go hungry, can't talk to your wife/Queen if she is a big lump of shiny metal. One of the Chaos gods could of cursed them as nasty joke after they did it a favour.

Often when people get cursed it is revenge for something they did or promised to do and never did. Like those ghost people in LOTR who kept on saying the way is shut the dead made it/was made by the dead/the dead keep it. They betrayed the king of Gondor and got cursed by him. Your Nightlords problems could be revenge from whatever entity provided them with what they wanted and they then tried to get away without proper payment.

This is just a few of my ideas for why they may be cursed. I think they could live near the Tau if you wanted, if you are expecting to fight loads of Tau it would make sense. Their world could even be hidden in Tau space and protected so the Tau have loads of trouble finding it or can't go there. Or maybe your world has something about it the Tau avoid like the plague. You said it's population all vanished and maybe the same thing happened to Tau colonists. To conbine curse with Tau your Nightlords might have some task to perform on the Tau (sacrifice lots of this young new race to ancient evil gods) or (create messed up psychic Tau to infest the Tau empire with Daemons) or (inflitrate humans under Tau protection and do who knows what evil things). In Tau territory (create evil Tau, Chaos cult) or (find ancient evil, daemonic artifact for Chaos god's horrible, gob-smacking master plan). Whatever is the reason it could all be in order to get the curse lifted.
