How many Chaos Space Marines exist?

There are two main questions I'd like discussed:

    1) How many Chaos Traitor Space Marines are there?

    2) Do they get replaced when they die? If so, how? Are they trained like normal SM's? Are they respawned?

Reading 40k books etc, its amazing how many traitor marines die. To think of all those millenia vs. the IMperium. Dont you think their numbers would be a tad depleted by now?

Well counting the traitor leigons, its at least in the tens in thousands, I wouldn't be surprised if the total amount of chaos marines exceeded 100,000. That is however a stretch. However, give the extreme long life of chaos marines due to living in the Eye of Terror which exists outside of time. Its quite possible for that many if not more to exist. For all we know if you add up EVERY marine that has turned to chaos since the heresy, you could end up with a million. They can never organize, so Black crusades pending, WAAGH size chaos incursion is pretty much impossible.

i'd say that theres probably over 9000 original chaos space marines from the horus heresy.. but not many more than that. They should be pretty rare in the 40k universe, but i'm pretty sure they can train new ones using gene seed just like loyalist space marines.

Noone knows for sure. It's all guess work. But a lot, most likely.

And some legions know how to clone so they clone new marines, others have ways of recreating the organs that are implanted so they can make new marines that way and others are more dependent on renegades.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

More than the number of loyal marines probably, and we don't know how many of them there are either.

Each legion was about 10,000 strong starting off. So after the Great Crusade (where they expanded) and the Horus Heresy (where they were depleted) we have no idea how many, just that there was a lot.
Since then many chapters, squads and marines have fallen to chaos and they can be added to the tally.

Lots of traitors die, some are resurrected by the Dark Gods (Kharn was killed during the siege of Terra but the Gods brought him back to life), Stolen Geneseed, harvested from loyalist casualties and recently turned renegades mean that marines can be created in the same way that the loyalists do.
Fabius Biles experiments have probably given a few ways to create something closely resembling a true marine.
There are other rumours and stories of Marines grown in daemonic vats, spawned from chaos creatures, etc.

Cloning would be another good way to create a few marines, if you get it right.

    I see.

Wouldn't it be kinda hard for geneseed implantation, as Chaos would probably cause morbid mutations and the like? It sort of (i think) implied in the old codex CSM that the warriors of chaos were indeed immortal and each time they time they get respawned in the Warp.

Yeah but I think only the truely chosen space marines get reformed in the warp. Not your everyday Joe Space Marine.

Exposer to the warp taints everything.
You cannot implant CSM geneseed into anything and expect it to work.
That is why they need to harvest it from new recruits, Loyalist casualties and find workarounds.
