Not sure if this is the right place, If it isnt, please say so and move it, thanks.
Ive read several Warhammer 40k novels, a few backgrounds book, every article on the GW websites, but Ive never seen head or tail of any mentioning of sailing ships.
I dont mean the kind that are powered by sails or oars or men leaning over the side paddling with their arms. Im talking about gigantic warships that could stand up to a titan in a fair or unfair fight.
Have they just phased out of use, does The Benevolent One have something against ships of the nautical nature, or have they just never been mentioned?
Anybody have any input on this?
Yeah, if you read one of the comics (Deff Sqwadron) theres one chapter where the main character gets to fly a bombing mission against a giant Ork ship. omg.... you HAVe to see it - bristiling with guns and Orkiness.
Also, in the Armageddon war, the Orks took over one of the hives through a sea assault.
Im assuming that the Imperials would have an equivalent.
Or maybe not, since its faster to use planes instead
When did they come out with comics and why wasnt I informed?
Its a graphic novel, I mean. Its Black Library
Oohh, I see, I havent read it, I should check that out.
Anyway, why havent they made a model for the Ork or an Imperial ship?
At this point ships are largely obsolete, you can even see it today in modern navies, the only reason they are around is to support aircraft and shore bombardment. When both of those missions can be covered from space, there isn't really a need for a surface navy, they can complete the same missions but spacecraft are much more versatile. On the other hand, certain PDF forces probably maintain some floating air defense ships/barges where there isn't any room on land such as on hive worlds or an insurgency may have some as they do not have air or space superiority.
Any way, the point of the rambling post above is that you may still see some military seacraft, but they would be few and far between.
Rightly said Black 8.
Most sea ships are also for transportation of goods between cities, as is implied in several novels.
There was also a short story in the old Tyranid codex set on a naval transport ship (which had been at sea since the Tyranid invasion of its world had begun, and thus just saw all the horrible ecological effects at a distance.)
So yeah, there are certainly Oceangoing ships. But I don't think there's a centralized Imperial sea navy. I guess PDF handles that, as ships are quite hard to transport between planets.
And Titans are ridiculous and almost-lost examples of Imperial high technology. They mount shield systems which are designed for starships. I can't see much else standing up to one short of an ocean-going Ordinatus or something..
