I'm looking at starting a Space Marine strike force formed from the mysterious Blood Ravens 5th Company (see HERE for the lists) up to around 1500pts. For those of you that aren't familar with the BR background, here's a summary fo the 5th Company's background from Lexicanum, which is a shortened version of the fluff from WD305 Index Astartes.
The Blood Ravens 5th company is known as the 'Fated', and though the reasons for this are obscure, it may go back to an incident recorded in the annals of the Chapter's Librarium, but never spoken of openly. In M38 the entire 5th company was recorded as having been lost in the Warp, but the truth of the matter may be by far darker. It is whispered that one of the company Librarians was seduced by the lure of the ruinous powers, and turned his fellow brethren to Chaos. This notion is by large dismissed by the Chapter today, but for unknown reasons the current members of the Blood Ravens 5th Company wear badges of redemption, penitence and shame upon their armour suits. None either will, or can, reveal the reasons for this.
Naturally, this enticing little bit of background presents some interesting modelling and fluff opportunities! So based on this snippet, here's a little background surrounding my forces.
After the fall of the 5th Company in M38, the Secret Masters of the Blood Ravens took care to place the new company in the hands of one who would not allow them to stray again. Seeing the great need for the company to rise again loyal and strengthened, Master-Librarian Kalesh, the chapter's Master of the Librarium, stepped forward. Seeing his qualities in battle and in the Librarium itself, the Secret Masters bestowed upon him the mantle of Master of the 5th Company.
Kalesh was, and is, a naturally quiet man on first impressions; indeed, were it not for his superhuman size, it would be easy to regard him as a man of few words and less battle prowess. However, his powers of foresight and prediction are second to none in the chapter, and often has his word averted a crisis. It was he that sent the warnings to the 4th Company on Vardian II ere the legions of the Plague Father descended upon it, so allowing the forces of the Inqusition to cleanse the planet without loss of a single Marine. These predictions he brings to his company, and it is said that he pursues his powers so that he might prevent a second fall of the 5th Company.
As the Master-Librarian, Kalesh maintains his role in adjudicating a Neophyte's psychic abilities before his induction as a Lexicanium. From this comes the 5th Company's abundance in psykers, even higher than the normal BLood Ravens companies. The whole command structure of the 5th Company consist of Psykers, with the exception of the Apothecaries and Techmarines. Beneath Kalesh are a number of Brother-Librarians who operate as captains, leading smaller sections of the Company as strike forces, often into the heart of an enemy stronghold, looking to press back the enemy until his back is against the wall and hsi head can be ripped from his shoulders.
The 5th Company excel at ranged warfare, employing the adaptable firepower of the Tactical Squads, as well as the solid shells of the Vindicator tank. The also maintaina large number of Dreadnoughts, for Kalesh considers the knowledge of the ancients to be a great advantage, both on the field of battle and in the planning of a campaign. Most of these Dreadnoughts are inhabited by former members of the 1st Company, for the 5th Company's original Dreadnoughts were lost in the warp storm of M38. These Dreadnoughts offer the firepower expected by the 5th Company, but also offer close combat support to their brothers when the enemy draws close.
As the 41st Millenium draws to a close, the 5th Company have risen again to stand alongside their battle-brothers. Their heads remain bowed, however, forever in shame of the unknown atrocities that brought the fate of the original 5th Company.
With this force I'm also hoping to keep a record (Blood Bowl style) of my battles; my opponent, the mission, and the outcome. This way I can hopefully continue the story of the 5th Company.
I'm starting up a Blood Ravens 5th company as well.
How are you modelling the marks of penitence?
