    Tide of Iron

I see seas running with filth and Blood. The Enemy, the Four Heralds of Darkness astride a sun that grows dim. I see knights, malevolent, spitting obscenities and maledictions. Ten Thousand years they have waited and now they ride forth. Arise arise men of the Emperor, heroes of the Imperium, the Dark Crusade is upon us the Tide of Iron crashes down on our boarders…….
Warp Seer Sebastien Handron, sanctioned and sworn to Inquisitor Lord Bartholomew Kois.

Hi this is the second part in the Tide of Iron Campaign I am playing down at GW.

    Story so far……..

    Operation Rusted Iron
The Imperium plants a number of agents on to the world of Nathos which is largely controlled by the Iron Warriors. These agents learn of a major Iron Warrior attack,

    Operation Marked Vengeance
A number of Adeptus Astartes forces combine to strike at Nathos and recover the agents, In the course of several bloody and mostly disastrous raids the Imperial forces barely escape with the information that the Inquisitorial world of Thelos is the target of the Iron Warriors attack

    War on Thelos
Iron Warriors strike at Thelos in an attempt to kill or capture Inquisitor Lord Kois and recover the fabled Canthor Stone. A Pre Heresy artefact that has the potential to be a powerful weapon against Chaos.

Opposing them is the space fleet of the Shadow Ravens Chapter and the combined might of the Black Templars the Crimson Fists and the Ordo Malleus.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warsmith Hanzio pressed his attack against the Crimson Fist Land Raider. His daemon blade howled with thirst and rage as it cut chunks out of the tanks ancient ceramite flank. The malevolent blade twisted and fought Hanzio’s grip, frustrated that its foe was not mortal and had no blood to drink on.

The Iron Warrior redoubled his efforts. His power claw crackled with barely contained energy as he desperately tried to rip away the machines tracks.

The Land Raider pulled away from Hanzio, reversing up a muddy bank, throwing up clods of earth and spattering Hanzio’s Terminator armour with dirty water. Hanzio followed, the micropore adherent on the soles of his boots allowing him to grip the slick surface of the trench the Land Raider’s tracks had formed.

Before Hanzio could reach it, the Land Raider came to a juddering halt, its engine revving and growling like a cornered beast. Its undamaged sponson lascannon swung around and Hanzio instinctively moved to one side. Pistons and servos inside his millennia old armour working hard to respond to his actions. Hanzio’s vision grew dark for a moment, colours fading as his helmet’s photo-chromatic sensors reacted to the dazzling las blast.

The bolt of energy flew past Hanzio’s head. The Chaos Lord turned and realised he hadn’t been the target. Across the battlefield the las blast sheared through the leg joint of Beferius the Iron Warrior Dreadnought. The Dreadnought toppled slowly to one side, and then fell onto its front. Oil leaking from the leg wound met chunks of burning metal and the war machine was set alight.

Hanzio turned back in a rage, only to be greeted by a hail of bolter fire. From their position dug into a deep crater a squad of Crimson Fists were pouring all the fire they could muster into Hanzio. Bolt shells exploded with little effect against his Terminator armour. One shot though punched its way through a neck joint It exploded just before it impacted with his neck. Hanzio’s skin had long since hardened like leather and he barely registered the pain as bolter fragments pierced and burned him.

The Chaos Lord realised how far he was from his own lines though. He was at least two hundred meters from the rest of the Iron Warriors advance that was still mopping up the last of the first line of Crimson Fist defenders. The Loyalists were forming up a new defensive position around the damaged Land Raider.

Resigned to the fact that he would have to marshal his forces for another yet another surge, Hanzio withdrew into the fog and smoke of battle……

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following the completion of operation Marked Vengeance, the Imperial Forces of the Ordo Malleus and the Crimson Fists set out at once to the Moon of Thelos to warn Inquisitor Lord Kois of the impending Iron Warriors attack and attempt to recover the Canthor Stone.

Psychic messages were sent out over a wide area informing he Shadow Ravens Chapter who patrolled Thelos of the Chaos attack. Petitions were also sent to the Black Templars who readily agreed to assist in the defence of Thelos.

The Iron Warriors war fleet was large indeed, comprising of dozens of capital ships and numerous escorts. When it broke into real space scant hours after the Crimson Fists had arrived the Shadow Raven fleet had little chance of stopping it. However a number of hit and run strikes and valiant boarding actions did lead to several Iron Warrior vessels being crippled.

Pedro Kantor Grand Master of the Crimson Fists led the defence of Thelos. He knew that the Iron Warriors would land down in several locations and attack Inquisitor Lord Kois’ location from a number of directions. Kantor’s plan was to set up a thin line of Crimson Fists around the Inquisitors fortress while Black Templars secured the Inquisitor Lord himself. While the Crimson Fists held the Iron Warriors back the Black Templars would attempt a break out towards the star port of Mournhaven.

The Crimson fists held the Iron Warriors at bay for nearly 21 hours on multiple fronts. Against a lesser enemy the grim resolution of the Crimson Fists would have been enough, but the Iron Warriors were masters of attrition.

Eventually the Iron Warriors probing attacks found the weak link in the Crimson Fists chain. A number rof diversionary attacks drew several squads away from the Fists position and then an overwhelming attack headed by War Smith Hanzio, Commander of the Iron Warriors forces on Thelos, and supported by daemons and Thousand Sons Allies breached the Crimson Fists line and gave the Iron Warriors a clear route to Inquisitor Lord Kois.

By this time the Black Templars had secured their objective and were preparing to depart……

I like! Very nice report indeed. Some spelling and punctuation errors but overall I'd say that it is a-okay.
And about the IW fleet. A fleet in 40k usually compromises a dozen ships or so, and that is a fairly large fleet. A fleet containing dozens of capital ships would be incredibly huge (I'm saying Black Crusade-huge) and not very plausible at all, especially for an attack like this.
Heck, I'm unsure of the IWs can even muster that many ships.

    Keep 'em coming.

Yeah, but dozens of capital ships? That makes the Gothic war, one of the largest naval conflicts during the 41st millennium, seem quite small. Not to mention how overkill it is for one world!

I completly understand what you mean. My justification is thus

A Sector Battle Fleet for the Imperium can number between 50-75 vessels.

I was thinking of the Tide Of Iron Fleet having about 20-30 vessels and maybe that again in escorts.....

Thelos is only the first world......

Basically the campaign is probably going to involve a lot of different players and armies (I can already think of four different Space Marine Chapters off hand that players have available) and if it is going to involve Tau, Eldar orks etc it is going to need to be on a big scale.

I hate these campaigns where you have like 8 races fighting for one city or whatever. WH40K universe is masssive, so I think its only appropriate to think massive.
