The Valkoinen Guard are no strangers to war. For hundreds of years they have fought the enemies of mankind, primarily chaos as they reside just a system away from Medusa V. This much fighting has earned themselves the reputation of never having fallen back or retreating from a battle no matter how overwhelming the odds. However they have not only just fought the enemies of mankind...
During a lull between Chaos invasions of their sector the Vostroyan Guard seeked to expand their control over the surrounding systems including the Valkoinen Guards planet of Irrland. When Vostroyan diplomatic negotiations failed to seize Valkoinen and its resources military action took over. For 105 days a bloody, horrific and pointless campaign was fought between two loyal armies of the emperor. The Vostroyans named it; "Operation Barbossa."
The Vostroyans due to the terrain of the continent were forced to land in only two places on the planets single continent. One in the north and one in the south. The plan was to smash all between them and meet in the center. However it is the actions taken on the northern front that interest imperial scholars the most between General Boyvak of the Vostroyans and Colonel Mannerhiem of the Valkoinen Guard.
When the first Vostroyan guard units landed on the small mountain covered planet they expected victory withing a few weeks. This thought was reinforced when lead armor elements of the 3rd shock army smashed threw the defences of Helsinki, one of the main population centers on the planet. With this inforamtion and the city in hand the commander of the Vostroyan forces Comander Stalin Boyvak prematurely claimed Helsinki as the new capital on the Vostryans new planet and released alcohal to the 3rd shock army as a reward for their victory.
That night as the 3rd shock army celbrated the 18th Jalkaväki Company counter attacked. Drunk and disorgaized the Vostroyans stood no chance and at the end of the night over 100,000 of them were dead and their tanks either blazing wrekage or now in service of the Valkoinen Guard. The most impressive fact about this massacre was that the Valkoinen guard only assaulted with 5,000 men with no armor. Shock and bewildered the survivors were driven out of the city and back to their landing ships before a line of resistence could be established.
Humiliated and outraged Boyvak ordered 500,000 more guardsmen to the planet along with tanks and artillery and prepared for a massive second assault on Helsinki. The 50,000 Valkoinen Guard under command of then Colonel Erwin Mannerheim dug in and set up hastily built but effective defense works on the outskits of the city and requested reinforcements. Those came in the form of the Valkoinen Guards few mechanized companies numbering only around 1,500 men and vehicles. That dawn the Vostroyans struck.
Boyvak confident that he would overrun the small force of Valkoinen Guard before him deployed all of the infantry and all the armor in a frontal assault action meant to smash through the defences. Preluding this assault was an hour long bombardment that tech priests recorded as using over 300,000 rounds of amunition that raked back and forth across the Valkoinen positions. As the last shell landed the massed infantry and armor of the Vostroyans was unleashed at what they thought were paralyzed defenders. However in their haste and poor communication the Vostroyan tanks sped ahead and left the infantry behind. Seeing this confusion Mannerheim ordered his men to let the tanks pass into the city without resistance and to only focus on the infantry.
As the last of the tanks passed into the city unaposed the line was reclosed and the slaughter began. Strategically placed heay bolters and mortar teams tore through the adancing waves of Vostroyans leaving piles of men meters deep scattered across the battlefield. Seeming unnerved by the losses the Vostroyans kept advancing into the teeth of fire still believing that they had a chance.
The armor elements of the Vostroyans cut off in the city relized their error when hunter kill teams of melta gun weilding Valkonien Guard began to pick them off one by one in city streets. Within the hour all 2,000 elements of the Vostroyans armor had been destroyed or captured and after two months of vicous fighting Boyvak read the horiffic reports in disbelief he saw that the infatry assault had failed tremendously as fewer then a third of his men he sent out to take the city returned alive. A comment from a Vostroyan sergent said that the Valkoinen guard fought like "cornered wolves," This term giving the 18th their nickname and Mannerheim the title of "Old Wolf."
The Valkonien guard had suffered horribly as well however. Fully 60% of the men of Mannerheims command were dead or unable to fight and their defence line lay smashed and destroyed in several places. Realizing he could not hold the city if assaulted like that again he desperetly sent out calls for aid to the remanding forces on the planet knowing that he would recive little to no aid as their forces were split. However Boyvak delayed his assault believing a much larger force defended Helsinki and requested more men and vehicles which were reluctantly sent to him. With this gained time Mannerheim came to a decision that would decide the fate of the northern front...attack.
That night under the cover of a snow storm the Valkoinen Guard struck with all the remaing men at their disposal. The first warning the Vostroyans had was the screams of the men in the trenches ad defences in front of them. Elements of the 18th led by Mannerheim himself assaulted the Vostroyans directly drawing their men and vehicles like a moth to a flame. As his diversionary worked the suriving Mechanized divisions surprised the right flank of the Vostroyan line as their ski clad Chimeras crossed the frozen tundra with ease and smashed through the Vostroyan lines heading for their landing zone.
Hearing over the vox that his enemies were approaching his command center less then a mile away Boyvak did the unthinkable...he abandoned his men in the closest transport possible. Soon the word spread that their commander had abandoned them and what fight left in the Vostroyans vanished and rather being surrounded and slaughtered the remants of the 3rd shock army surrendered.
With the northern front firmly secured the Valkoinen Guard high command focused all of its attention on the southern front and after a few more months of vicious fighting the Vostroyans withdrew realizing that the could not take the planet without weakening their defences on Medusa V.
Though outnumbering the Valkoinen Guard 100 to one in men, 2000 to one in tanks and nearly complete dominance of the skies the Vostroyan Guard could not beat the determined entrenched defenders. For his cowardly actions General Boyvak was executed soon after returning to the ships in orbit. The Barbarossa Campaign had ended in a humiliating defeat for the Vostroyans and to this day hold a bitter grudge against the Valkoinen Guard and especially for Mannerheim and the 18 Jalkaväki Company.
Tell me what you think about it, any views, opinions or comments are appreciated. Thanks for reading!
Well, I think the idea of using the finnish ww2 soldiers as a base for your army is really cool and original!
One thing I would do though, is taking the finnish words like jalkaväki and valkoinen and replace them with infantry and white. It just makes a lot more sense and looks better (in my opinion).
Also, you could expand your fluff with some custom weapons, as the finnish soldiers had to improvise a lot to beat tanks etc.
Even though I'm not crazy at all about the finnish white guard what with their war crimes and all, I still think this really could be something really great.
Just make sure that the finnish army is just a basis for your fluff instead of your fluff being the finnish army in 40k.
I like them but they just seem too powerful. outnumbered 100 to 1 in men, 2000 to 1 in tanks, and almost without any air support and they were winning. In the battle against the drunken army they still averaged out 20 kills each! It's just too much.

War Crimes? I was not aware that the white guard comitted any during the winter war. If anyone had commited them it would have been the russians as well they were pretty brutal in everything they did. THe reason i added Valkoinen and such was to kinda make it look different. And yes i am actually working on a molontov cocktail onversion for a melta gun so yeah going to have fun with that!
With the white guard I was referring to the finnish civil war where mass executions were very frequent.
And you might be right about the winter war, because most things I heard of were commited in the continuation war but anyways.
Of course also what bugs me is the whole idea of a white (right wing) guard, but who am I to say.
Anyways, I was in no ways trying to pin someone elses faults in your fluff
Looking forward for the molotovs!
