Angalorum is located near the Tau Empire, close to the Eastern Fringe. It is one of the furthest human populated planets.
Humans first reached Angalorum in the middle of the 20th Millenium. The initial people who colonised it named the planet Cymru. A native sentient species, quite highly developed was wiped out over the centuries, their own name forgotton, the Cymrians called them Bukken. The ceansing of the Bukken took 500 years, as the Cymrians spread rapidly around the planet, but were unwilling to virus bomb, war ravage the planet to severly to preserve its resources.
Cymru lasted into the age of strife, prosperous and happy and somewhat isolated from the troubles that blighted the rest o mankind. It was sometime in the 25th Millenium that the species known as the Ordodrones, a reptillian bipedular race, came and in a short but brutal campaign were able to invade, enslave and take Cymru for its own. The Ordodrones were responsible for dividing the peoples of cymru into "nations". The Ordovones left suddenly in the 27th Milleniium, when a threat they referred to as "the scourge" threatened their homeworld and they pulled out en masse. This left the planet defenceless and vunerable to a whole host of nasty beasts. Ork raiders and dark elves began to blight the planet using it as a fertile and easy hunting ground. So it was that the human mercenary commander Hengist and his Space Pirate brother Horsa were paid to bring their considarable forces to the planet and put and end to the Orc and Dark Eldar raiders.
Hengist and Horsa were more than effective, and soon it was Dark Elves orking in the mines of Cymru, and orcs fighting in their fighting pits. However oth Hengst and Horsa were kings of roving space nomads, and once established their people kept coming. Soon the cymrians found themselves the sujects of another people.
The Angals as they called themselves set themselves up in the fertile and green lands in the temperate western continent, which became known as Angalorum. This was the home of the Welias. The Welias rebelled against their new masters, undure their leader Ardor, and iin the ensuing war found themselves gradually wiped out and expunged from their lands. The planet was cut off from other human worlds by warp storms this time. The other people on the planet were subjegated gradually by the Angals, some by the gun, others by political trickery. By the time the warpstorms subsided Angalorum had been forged anew, the Angals were the dominate ace on the planet and they had developed to a level of technology that saw them building a fleet of advanced starships.
The Angals first came into contact with the burgeoning Empire of man in 31st millenium, and promptly submitted at the Schindelgiest Accord. The Angals did not like this, they were fiercely devoted to their gods, but were aware that the empire had the manpower to overhelm them. When the Horus Heresy broke out Angalrum took advantage of the chaos to declare its independance. Ironically, it would spend most of the Heresy allied to a passing Eldar Craftworld fighting off Chaos forces and Dark Eldar raiders.
By a happy fate, due to a clerical error Angalorum was filed as cleansed and dead by an inept civil servant. And it escaped the attention of the recovering Imperium for the next 9 000 years. Angalorum made some tentative steps in to other neighbouring systems, fighting against the Tau, Orks, Dark Eldar and several minor species managing to claim several minor moons as outpost.
The Imperium made its presence known in this sector again when a fleet entered Angalorums space, and was routed by an Royal Naval fleet sent to intersept it. 17 ships were captured and 13 destroyed. Little did they know that they had only seen off a minor exploration fleet. The Imperium mounted a full invasion three years later, which while being unable to establish a foothold on Angalorum did manage to deprive it of all its off world outposts. The Tau, offered Angalorum its protection if it would join it empire.
This provoked the Angalorum Civil War, a three faction war that pitted a pro tau faction, a pro independance faction and a small pro imperial faction against each other. With the Tau faction finally winning out. This co encided with the third imperial invasion which was unprepared or the Tau and Angalorum forces combined and received a severe drubbing.
Angalorum is rebuilding and recovering, with Tau advisors, a small number of Tau are on world helping to improve the Angals industry and agriculture, as well as improving their orbital defense systems and ships. The army is not fully trusted yet by the Tau (approx half of them having fought against Tau/ pro Tau forces, so while their share tactical advise and knowledge they will not yet trust them with Tau military hardware.
The Army contains the Regulars, Militia and Fryd. A regular is a volunteer, full time paid proffesional who has volunteered for 7,15 or 25 year contracts. The Militia are full time but they are commited purely to the defense of Angalorum Prime, and the Fryd are Reservists, men who have gone back to civilian life but are elligable for the first 3 years of returning to be called up for duty for up to six weeks at a year (officers are full time of course).
There are 6 Regiments of Guards, 110 Line Regiments, 10 Drop Troop regiments, 8 Royal Marine Regiments (Technically part of the Navy but under Army command), There are 15 Vassal Regiments (vassals are people from Angalorum from non Angal bloodlines, like Khukri Tribesmen) There are also 5 Experimental regiments armed with new Tau weaponry and assinged to fight in integrated Tau formations, and the Long Range Battalion, (10 battalions, but precise details kept secret)
The line regiments are numbered 1 through to 110, and the 15 Vassal regiments are numbered 111 through too 125. The Guards and Royal Marines are un numbered. The Experimental corps are in named regiments with each battalion bearing its own name.
A regiment consists of 5 battalions, and though many units bear historic titles like 43rd Duke of Nomporths Light Infantry and the 7th City of Longdune Fusileers, in practice the line and guards are all equipped in a similar manner, the 1st and 2nd battalions will usually be Light Role infantry, the 3rd and 4th would be mechanised and the 5th battalion would be an assault battalion. In practice each battalion will serve alongside battalions from other regiments and not with other battalions from the same regiment. Usually each regiment has at least one regiment at home on Angalorum prime. A battalion comprises 920 men in 4 "rifle" companies and a HQ company. "Rifle" is another historic name and simply indicates the company is a battle company not HQ. Typically companies in most regiments are A,B,C,D though some may have other internal historic names for them. A Regiment usually recruits from tightly defined recruiting grounds, though most will happily take recruits from other recruiting patches if it fills up their quota. Women do not serve in the ranks under normal circumstances, however they are permitted to fight as officers, about 10% of the infantry officers in the Army are female. In the ranks women can only be admitted if they contain Wastelander blood, as these women are considered to be tougher and more adept at fighting, they also USUALLY avoid romantic relationships with Angals and non Wastelanders as it is a great sin for them to be involved with non wastelander men, there are also a tiny number of women officers who may have been demoted to the ranks. currently about 0.8% of the rank and file are female in the infantry.
685 400 is the current number of men in the Angalorum Regular Infantry Regiments. Note this does not include the 9200 "special forces" and 25 000 in the Experimental Corps.
Also it should also be worth mentioning the Air Defence Regiments, Royal Marine ship compliments, Naval Landing Brigades are also equipped in much the same away as infantrymen and capable of fighting in much the same way but are not under Army command so are not listed here.
The 2nd Battalion of the 45th Mercian Foresters Regiment.
The 2nd Battalion is designated as Light Role Infantry, which in Angalorum military terms means that it is not equipped with its own APC's or tanks, and carry only light arms and low calibre ordnance such as Heavy Bolters, Missle Launchers and Auto Cannons. It is therefore a basic footslogger battalion. It is similer then two the 1st battalion which is also light role, and different to the 3rd and 4th battalions (mechanised) and the 5th battalion which is designated assault.
Like most battalions it consists of four Rifle companies and a HQ company.
Currently, the battalion is commanded by Lt.Col Thorswood. Ethelred Thorswood is in his mid 40's and has been in the 45th his whole military career. Originiating from a country estate in north Occinghamshire he followed his two older brothers into army life after he reached the age of 16. being of the huscarl (aristocratic) class he graduated military school and was succsessful in applying for his Ensignsy in the 45th. He started in the 5th battalion, where he carried the company flag of A company and learnt from his mentor Major Samuel Wodensbury, while the 5th battalion avoided the hardships of the campaign against Warlord Krugg Grimbelly on the pink moon of Scarab and the trench hell of the Hokkaido War against the 347th Imperial Army group, it did see many a brisk action of a two year period on Angalorum Prime while it protected the border regions and patroled the wastelands. Thorswood rescued several of his men who had been taken prisoner by some wastelander bandits. Earning his 1st mention in dispatches and an early promotion. His rise through the officers mess was steady spending his whole time with 5th battalion, eventually becoming the senior major of the battalion and commander of C company. However under the charmed and youthful Lt.Col Cumberland, his career with in the 5/45th seemed to have reached its peak. 2nd Battalion had been fighting hard in theHokkaido War, but had been heavily smashed about in the Battle of Totenberg, losing a large number of officers to Imperial snipers. Thus, Thorswood was able to finally lead his own battalion. This past eight years have seen Thorswood lead his battalion in Aradian Campaign, The Civil War, and the War of Unity. Thorswood has been wounded five times in action, an Ork boy stabbed him through the thigh while a 2nd Lieutennant, he was shot through the shoulder by an unseen sniper while a Captian fighting against Eldar pirates. He was wounded again while a major during a bayonet charge against Fangorian Red Troopers. He was lasgunned by a Moradian Iron Guardsmen on Aradia. He was wounded and taken prisoner by men of the 7th Royal Fusileers during the civil war missing the bulk of the fighting. He was returned to his battalion in time to lead it in the unity war.
