Is there an Imperial equivalent to the Army Corps of Engineers? I'm not talking about the Ad-mech, but rather more lower-tech stuff. Flattening hills, digging tunnels, laying bridges, building dams etc. I think it would be an interesting IG force to model.
Yes there probably is. I remember that FW sold an assault bridge. I imagine that would be put in place by an engineer corp. The Adeptus mechanicus controls the most advanced stuff and often making modifications or new designs is something only they are allowed to do. Or people are very supersticious about it, aside from Space marines who have their own Techmarines. Low-tech stuff is likely something the Guard do alot of.
In the main rulebook in the fluff for Imperial Guard there is a description of a Leman russ tank. It is said to be tough enough to withstand the often less-than-expert modifications of repair crews. That seems to say if something breaks down the Guard have their own resources to deal with it. The Guard would have to have their own ways of clearing space for roads and so on. Also constructing bunkers, trenches and landing sites would be up to the Guard. The knowledge of how to work machines may of originated with the Mechanicus but there aren't enough Techpriests in the galaxy to handle the needs of one large Imperial guard conflict.
I think the Imperial gaurd includes lots of things we don't see in the game. I think Guard can get medics but there would also be actual medical officers that you can't buy or use in a game. There is also the question of water. Fighting over in or underwater would be needed from time to time. So there are probably Imperial Guard Frogmen and boats, submarines etc. This applies to other armies too. Doubless Chaos marines have hordes of slaves to do their labouring and bunker building. Tyranids will have critters you rarely (queens) see in the game that lay eggs.
Perhaps, even a Penal legion? They obviously couldn't have Penal soldiers do it all, but hey...
