Alright my fellow fluff-writers, critics and 40K knowledge buffs - I have a proposition to make you.
Often enough I've found myself bouncing back and forth between activity and inactivity on these forums. In the same way, I've found others do the same thing. Such as our good friend and resident antagonist, ze_Poodle. Moreover, every once in a while we see a good fluff story, as well as a crappy one - being posted here with few or zero feedback given.
What if we, the writers and readers of fluff could band together and create a story from a joint vision?
This is my idea. We each post a part of the story, as much as we want. It can be a paragraph, a page - it doesn't matter. It's like a three word story, HOWEVER - this one won't actually suck AND it'll nurture our creative thinking as well as develop our bond as LO Fluff enthusiasts.
On this thread, we can develop what the main protagonists will be. As in, will it be an Imperial Guard story? A space marine story? Maybe an Eldar story? Chaos Space Marines?
That's the first thing we should agree on, since we'll need a joint vision that everyone's comfortable writing about in order to keep us interested, encourage us to write and inspire us to create a compelling plot with said protagonists.
From there, the plot can go anywhere we like! Obviously, the first few posters might have a say as to what their main mission will be, but we can steer it one way or another AND we can have multiple viewpoints too. It doesn't have to be linear in the least.
For instance, let's say the first poster writes about the Deathwatch, and he's writing about a particular squad fighting Necrons. The next poster, can write about the Deathwatch Marines up in space, orbiting the planet, perhaps coordinating with the Marines below. The third poster can then talk about the squad that's preparing to deep-strike into enemy territory. And the fourth poster can go back to the first squad, or expand on the helmsmen's status.
It can really open up our chances to write a compelling page-turner and it'll be written by all of us. Who knows, if we do a good enough job, maybe the Masters of LO will see fit to put our story up for a prize or something, and we can all earn a shiny pixelated medal.
Writers of LO, what do you say? Are ya with me?
Your project sounds very exciting! A cooperative story with interactive 'feedback' in the form of more fiction What level of writing experience do you need to have? I know you want this to be a good one. Right now I only have the Witch Hunter's book and the main rule book, so I am a fluff novice. But I'm willing to put the time in to surf the net to find out about backgrounds of whatever characters appear in your story. I have seldom written fanfics before, is that all right? I don't mind sitting out if you'd like to have writers with a bit more experience.
In any case, I'd love to see you do a Sisters of Battle story!
Well you're most definite welcome to join in Petite Francois! I'd keep the story open to writers of all walks of life, of all levels of expertise. On top of that, you won't been to be forcefully committed to the story, as in, you could write one bit, two, keep posting every once in a while, whatever floats your boat. And no worries, whatever fluff knowledge you know is always easy to expand. We'll have to see what some other think in order to decide what the 'theme' of the story will be, but thank you for your interest, enthusiasm and support ^^
I look forward to co-writing this with you, character development is what I believe to be the most important aspect of a novel. Be it a dramatic scene describing the pain shared by two people to the fast-paced quick-blooded narrative of a war-torn battlefield, it all falls short of excellence without fleshed out three-dimensional characters. I'm really glad that this threat brought you forward.
Also, as for the Sisters of Battle idea, I'm sure we could work that out no matter what we write. If we can agree on the story revolving around a particular Order of Adeptus Sororitas. Or perhaps having them appear in the story if we decide to go with an IG-centric tale, or even a SM one. Heck, if we do a Chaos Space Marine story, they would make great antagonists, so you would be one of the primary writers there to make sure the Spikey Boys don't accomplish their goals.
Really, the sky's the limit with this project. The more ideas you and other people throw in, the better it'll be.

Well we decided to wait until mid week to start getting our ideas together. That should be enough time for other writers to get interested and join us or completely pass us by. Either way, we'll most likely start working on Thursday or so. I think it has great potential, it'll be a shame if we're only three however.
Still, perhaps we might begin with a few, then once we start writing and people see it develop they might want to join in. I guess we'll see.
[SIZE=2]How handy I just happened to start writing a book for this.
We could have a planet lost in a warp storm reemerge and detail the reclamation of the planet by several factions

We stand at the gates of sacrifice ever ready to go through. What do we want? To die only once our goal is complete! What do we ask? That we may only serve!Who are you?We are the Last Remnants, the unfettered soldiers!
Prawn we haven't actually started just yet, this thread is for ideas right now. Once we get enough people interested and such we'll begin writing. Which, as I said, will be Wednesday or so.
Speaking of which, a thought just came to me. We could write it like a game of Inquisitor. Each of our characters being a different person forming the retinue of a powerful Inquisitor. It would be one way to justify having a Sister a Battle Brother and an Inquisitor, for one.
Only an idea of course, I don't want to discourage anyone from proposing an Eldar tale or even an Ork story of sorts.

Hey there all, I'd be happy to join in and do my part. I'm a full on writer, but only a novice in the fluff genre. It sounds like an interesting propostion Adahn, and I'm curious to see how it goes about. Please message me or shoot me an e-mail when we've got a sort of boundary on the kind of story we'll be working with.
Also, are you thinking of doing a writing style similar to the Horus Heresy series in which it jumps between character passages? If so, that'd be neat and would help with the book I'm currently working on. I'm using a similar style of writing for that and this would prove to be very helpful I'm sure.
It's definitely an idea Aaron. Many writers use that style, and I think since we're a union of writers, it would be easier for us to adopt it and then adapt it to our needs.
Hey adahn. I don't have a lot of writing experience, but I really enjoy doing it and have written a few stories. I'm also a fluff addict and greedily devour and fluff that comes my way . So I'd be willing to pitch in a few segments of a story where I can find the time in my schedule.
I have a few ideas for a story too.
1. I think a Chaos story would be really interesting. It doesn't even necessarily have to be from the perspective of a Chaos Marine. A turned Guardsman or a cultists could be the main character.
2. Dark Eldar should have an appearance in the story, even if it is small. I think they are woefully underrepresented in fluff.
3. I'm not big on the idea of a Space Marine story, I personally think that there are too many, but I would still be willing to write if that's what was decided upon.
I'm really excited for this. Let's do it!
