YARRICK SQUARE: PART 1 of the BLACK EAGLE SERIES

Hell everyone. As i said in an earlier post i will be creating a series of short stories based on the creation of and the actions of the Steel Legion 11th Airborne, or as they are more widely known as, the "Black Eagles". This will be the first in what will hopefully be many stories to come in the future which will partly be decided on comments, views, ect. Any opinions and comments are appreciated. Now sit back, relax and i hope you enjoy it. And tell me what you think!!

The sirens began to wail. The inhabitants of Hades froze staring in disbelief and horror knowing only one thing was coming. The orks had breached the fleet’s defenses. Starting as a trickle people began to run and panic spreading through the packed hive like a wildfire. Soon that trickle became a flood of humanity running around with no sense of purpose screaming to the heavens as if pleading for deliverance.

Soon like an animal caught in a trap the hive began to tear and bloody itself as several civilians who with no purpose began to shoot, fight, and murder and pillage anything in site adding more to the chaos. The first blood spilled in Hades that day was by the very people several had lived side by side with.

With a resounding crack the Shield sprang into life covering the hive in a bubble of green electric energy. Through the blasts of the warning klaxons frantic orders were being shouted out struggling to get all their defenses in place. All throughout the hive military personnel struggled through the masses to get to their positions, quickly grabbing weapons and ammo, their fear filled eyes searching the skies for ork ships. Hydra gun emplacements on the wall came to life and began to track and scan the skies as deep rumbles in the curtain wall announced even larger batteries slowly grinding into position.

Then out of nowhere the sirens trailed off…and the sky grew dark. The humans of Hades looked up and to their horror saw several large objects descending upon them. In the ruined main spire of the hive the military chancellor in charge of ordering the defenses of Hades calmly raised a las pistol to his temple and fired, scattering his brains over his command center. He took the easy way out.
As the massive asteroids began to descend people who were trying to fight their way into the hive now began to try to flee. Thousands were trampled as they sleeked to break out of the gates and into the ash wastes. However the gates had been sealed when the first sirens began to wail.
Anti-air and orbital batteries that had lain dormant since the second war for Armageddon fired in a desperate attempt to smash apart the asteroids but only succeeded in scarring their surfaces.

Like the fist of an avenging god the first of the asteroids smashed into the shield of Hades exploding harmlessly into debris. The shield flared white under this impact but held. Then another asteroid hit, then another and then another. The shield began to flicker and die and the scattering debris as deadly as any shrapnel began to fall into the hive slaughtering hundreds. Finally the shield broke and snapped blowing out windows across the hive and with it went the human’s last hope.

Soon even larger asteroids began to fall tearing apart Hades bit by bit. Like a falling giant the Main spire itself was severed by a particularly large asteroid and fell smashing through the curtain wall and slaughtering untold thousands of inhabitants. Then along with the asteroids came massive orbital weapons unleashed by the greenskins tearing through habs and buildings like a knife through rice paper, vaporizing untold numbers of humans…the Hive began to hemorrhage and die and soon nothing was left except charred ruins under a black sky. The beast had returned to Armageddon….

    ***THREE WEEKS LATER***

“Move…come on you green son-of-a-bitch poke your head out again,” thought private/sniper “Ghost” as he glared through the site of his long las. He shifted slowly as to not raise dust and give away his position in the ruined tank factory over looking what was once known has Yarrick Square. Now it resembled a graveyard of bones and burnt out vehicles. Small fires burned across it sending inky black smoke into the already darkened skies over the ruins of Hades Hive.

Around him Ghost heard the stealthy movements of the rest of his fire team as the moved quietly into position in the windows and ledges of the tank factory overlooking the square. To his left privates Fawkes and Sturnz glanced out of separate windows their lasguns gripped in ready hands. To his right was Private Thor, the team’s missile launcher already aimed at the street corner below. Thor was massive, standing over six foot eight his uniform barely being able to hold his muscular bulk at bay. He wielded the missile launcher by himself being strong enough to carry both the ammo and the weapon himself. And finally to Ghosts immediate right stood Sergeant Aleron.
Ghost quickly trained his thoughts back to his target as the ork whose head he had seen slowly began to pick his way across the ruined square. Following closely behind were thirteen others their weapons tracking the buildings around them searching for targets.

At the sight of the orks Ghosts blood began to boil and his anger at the monsters expanded ten fold. He struggled to control his hands as his finger involuntarily tightened on the trigger.

“They really are stupid,” whispered Private Fawkes through the vox built into his rebreather mask. “Their buddies get shot and then they come out to the exact same spot.” He was referring to the thirty some odd ork bodies already cooling on the ground amid the burning wreckage, the first of today’s work.

“Thor, hold your fire until they get near the wrecked conqueror,” Sergeant Aleron ordered, his firm grim voice reassuring them all. The man was a…well lets face it a hero in Ghosts eyes. Second to only Lieutenant Wolfe Aleron had gained fame for taking out an ork warboss armed only with his knife. His fearlessness in combat along with his lead from the front command style made all the men in the room with him know that they were going to come away from this alive.

Below the orks had picked their way over about half of the square and were coming close to the smoking ruin of the conqueror tank who, the orks didn’t know, had a few propane tanks stashed inside of it.
“When you have the shot, take it Thor,” ordered Aleron over the vox. “And please save some for us,” he added bringing chuckles from the rest of the fire team. The giant of a man slowly brought his launcher up to his shoulder and took aim.

The lead ork in the square froze, sniffing the air like a dog then barked out something in its crude tongue. The orks behind immediately stopped advancing and quickly began to go to ground amid the ruins.
“Shit they know were here, Thor take the shot now!” Barked Aleron.

With a scream like a shrieking eagle the missile flew straight into the wrecked conqueror and detonated the propane tanks stashed within. The explosion tore the ruins of the vehicle apart sending scything shrapnel scattering into the orks in cover around it. Ghost watched with satisfaction as several limbs were severed and green bodies having holes torn into them. Spouting black blood burst from these wounds drawing howls of pain and anger. The surviving orks seeing were the missile had come from immediately got up and began to charge the tank factory firing massive slug rifles widely in their direction.

Ghost quickly sighted on the lead ork and fired, his hot shot round punching a hole through the orks forehead and blowing its few brains through the back of his skull in an orgy of blood and bone fragments. Around Ghost the rest of his team opened fire sending streaks of blue las fire into the approaching mob.
Howls of pain and the smell of scorched flesh rent the air as their shots found their targets. However orks being famously tough kept coming shrugging off wounds that would kill a human out right. Ghost watched in amazement as an ork who had his arm shot off picked it up and began to wave it around like a club. Ghost calmly put the ork down and quickly sighted and took down another. Unphased by their losses the orks kept coming.

One of the orks stopped and planted his feet aiming the massive shoota in his hands at their position. With a war cry of “Dakka Dakka Dakka,” he unleashed a massive barrage of lead at the Imperials.
Cursing madly Ghost threw himself back from the window as the machine guns barrage turned his old position into a pile of dust and debris. Aleron seeing the threat stood up in full view of the approaching orks, calmly sighted and fired hitting the ammo drum attached underneath the weapons stock.

The resulting explosion turned the ork in question and three of his buddies around him into a bloody mist as shells from the drum scattered into them at close range. However the four survivors were only a few feet from their position and were closing rapidly.

Ghost cursed as he fumbled with another clip, he wouldn’t get another shot off in time! Suddenly a thunderous voice came over the vox, “men of Armageddon, meet them head on!” And in disbelief Ghost watched as Aleron leaped out of cover and began to charge the orks, thumbing his chainsword into life.

The orks were just as startled and hesitated which cost one its life as the sergeants blade buried itself in its neck and severed its head, sending massie spurts of black blood into the sky. Without stopping Aleron turned and then slashed his blade across the second ork in line causing its ropy entrails to spill out on the ground. Ignoring this appalling wound the ork snarled and lashed out with is cleaver clipping the Seargeants helment off his head.

With whooping war cries Fawkes and Sturnz leapt out of cover and buried their bayonets into another one of the charging orks. Sturnz war cry turned into a shriek of agony as the ork, in a last ditch effort before he died sunk his teethe into Sturnz throat and tore it out, causing spraying blood to cover him and a now stunned Fawkes.

Ghost quickly sighted on the last ork with his long las but before he could get off the shot Thor leapt into the combat. Using the Missile Launcher like a club he smashed it onto the head of the last ork caving in its head and scattering bits of brain and bone matter over the rest of the squad.

Then an eirie silence fell on the square, broken only by the sounds of distant conflict and the flickering of flames. Ghost sighed and sat back relieved, that had been to close. He looked to his left to see Fawkes staring silently at Sturnz mutilated corpse shock and horror written on his face.

The crunch of a boot on gravel made him turn to see Aleron, his helmet back on his head listening intently to something that had just come over the vox. Sheathing his chain sword he nodded to Thor. “Pick up Sturnz body, we are moving out.” He glanced over his squad again. “ Apparently, command has something in mind for us survivors,” he added. Ghost got the impression that Aleron was smiling under his gas mask and for some reason…that didn’t make whatever the plan was sound good.

    Well done

This my friend is very, very good. But my only comment is that, where did Hades Hive get the bubble shield. I say this because i've just been reading "planetkiller" and the "defence shield" to stop the planet killer, seem to come from the necrons as it consumed the planets population.

Got the idea from reading Necropolis, story about the tanith fighting to defend a hive city, they had a shield that enclosed everything except the curtain wall.

Well i guess after seeing the very low number of views and feedback that i guess the series idea was a bust. Sorry to anyone who was hoping for a second but the lack of reviews and obvious enjoyment of the story has led me to decide to cancel the effort. I may ressurect it in the near future however as of right now, its obviously not going to happen.
