Recently got my Space Marines back and I got to thinking about making my own chapter. Their colours are purple red and grey. Have a lot of them painted like this and I like it. I wrote a precursory background for them. Which is this:
The world of the Liche Legion exists light years away from even the remotest of Imperial settlements, near the galactic edge. Many decades ago the chapter mother-ship crash landed after a massive Chaos attack, which resulted in a chain reaction destroying the ships warp-core. Almost everything and everyone was wiped out in a massive explosion. After days of floating through space at near warp-speeds the remains of the craft smashed into an unknown planet.
With no way to contact the Imperium, the survivors considered themselves lost.
Their world was covered in dense jungle and deep, treacherous swamps. Most alarming of all, the marines soon discovered, the planets biggest life form were gigantic leeches who just so happened to infest the excessive swamplands. The atmosphere was a dark, despairing purple, lightning storms and torrential rain ravaged the planet almost without surcease. But the marines adapted, they learned to survive.
It could be considered fortunate that almost all of the chapters vehicles were consumed in the events that led to their isolation, as the terrain would have rendered them useless. The survivors soon fashioned a plateau from the hull of their smashed craft which rested several metres above the turgid swamps. They fortified it with impenetrable walls. Fashioned living quarters for themselves and a temple for the chapters remaining chaplains where they may pray to the Emperor.
The Chapter Master and most of the command structure also did not survive the crash. The most senior member of the order to survive was Cortez, the Captain of the third company. And Heineken, the most senior ranking Chaplain, who had barely excelled himself as a scribe at the time of the crash. The two devised new regimes and ceremonies for the marines, incorporating the planets creatures into the rites of passage.
The Liche Legion has always kept faith, in the Emperor and in themselves. It is their greatest strength, and perhaps their greatest weakness.
I don't know a great deal about the 40k universe or anything. Was just wanting something short and easy to wrap my chapter around. Wouldn't mind fleshing it out some, but might need some help with that.
Sounds great. Actually, it's somewhat strange. For a first attempt at fluff, there's no wanking, and nothing implausible.
One thing I would try to incorporate is their reunifacation with the Imperium. After all, they have to get off their Swamp World somehow. Other than that, it's very suitable. Many marine chapters maintain their main bases on savage worlds, that ensure that only the strongest of the locals survive. Good recruiting stock.
How did they survive as marines in that time, without supply from elsewhere? Perhaps having the world as a regressed/failed colony would help. Only recently a deep-space Rouge Trader expedition remade contact, and they were able to obtain the ships and equipment to go forth to the stars, and serve the imperium once again.
Has their time on their Swamp World changed them? Do they have any idiosynracies in their fighting styles, or chapter philosophies?
It's a great mental image. Rain lashing the stagnant pools of water, an Ork patrol passing by. Behind them, giant figures in power armor slowly rise out of the water.
And what happened to the remnants of the Chaos forces that stranded them there?
It's a good idea, there aren't really many chapters that are jungle/swamp themed.

Thank you Harlequin!
The theme for my Space Marines is based around a foot-slogging army since the terrain is so dense. A dreadnought or two, some land speeders and bikes (I've converted quad bikes because their cool and the swamps/jungles of the world wouldn't be suitable for normal bikes). Other than that, just a Land Raider and Razorback, since I don't want a force totally devoid of tanks.
I was thinking that they'd make this world their home since there's no way they could leave, even if they wanted to. They survived by hunting the planets many predators for food. They are also scavengers. From time to time they do encounter enemies of the Imperium. Didn't want to go into lots of complicated details, just something easy to base my army around.
Their world has changed them. They had to adapt to their new world and have become more assualt focused because of the dense jungle etc. As rites of passage, from souts to marines (something like that anyway) they hunt the giant leeches which infest the planet to prove themselves worthy. The Chaplains have also become more important to them, so that they can maintain faith in themselves since they are essentially on their own.
And as for that Chaos force that rendered them so useless? Who knows? lol
How do they maintain unit strength, from the sounds of it they're on a planet that would only serve to dwindle down their numbers over time. What is the state of their apothecary/medical serfs and are there any native humans *tribal level or what not* that they can draw recruits from?
As for the vehicles you could have your Techmarines convert whats left of them with means to operate in the swampy areas like the chimera tank's amphibious ability.
Warhammer 40k: Blood Angels, Imperial Guard, Grey Knights, Space Lizards (wolves), Kroot, Witch Hunters, Dark Eldar
Warhammer: Lizardmen, Empire, Vampire Counts, Brettonians, High Elves, Skaven
I like it, it's... gritty...
1th: The names, Cortez might be to much associated with the Crimson Fists, and Heineken? That's just silly.
2nd: You say impenetrable walls were raised? How? What are they made off?
And i just thought of something else, to enhance this changed Chapter story, why not have them change their names form [insert name here] to Liche legion? It would tie in with their loss of ties (sic) to the Imperium.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.
Voor alle nederlanders:
The Dutch Legion
Yeah and also the legion thing could be made to chapter.Since all SM legions were dismantled.Overall great story though!
Praise be to the Emperor!!
I can only see a problem with the loss of Marines. You haven't mentioned any place to draw new recruits from. Other than that sounds great.
