I have read a lot about the lasgun online, and it seems to have the strength of a world war 2 battle rifle with the rapid fire capability of a modern day assault rifle although with no recoil. In the hands of an Imperial Guardsmen, would the lasgun be able to do this on its normal setting:
1) kill a space marine / chaos space marine with out a helmet on in a head shot, or would their black carapace save them?
2) Kill and ork with a headshot?
3) penetrate modern day kevlar/dragon skin armour/ conventional modern body armour? (take the US interceptor or PASGT armour as an example)
4) Is the lasgun more reliable than an ak-47 / requires less maintenance?
ps. what is the range in meters of a lasgun? And why does a longer barrel length increase accuracy if it is a laser weapon? I also heard Long-lass' need their barrel replaced every 20-50 shots according to their power setting. Is this true for normal lasguns as well? And lastly, can't a lasgun be able to be used to amputate limbs? After all, the wound is cauterized instantly and sterilized. Sorry for too many questions!

Yes! Requires ALOT LESS maintanence then the ak-47! Essentially it has infinit ammo because those energy cells can be recharged by leaving it in the sun or even faster would be to throw it in a fire(life expectancy decreases).
You can kill a space marine without its helmet on..... lasguns are like 50 caliber rounds on un armoured targets!
Even with his helmet on...if it went into his eye peice! IT WILL GO TO HIS BRAIN AND EVAPORATE IT!
It'll kill orcs with a headshot(eye) because your eye is linked to your brain and it'll just vapourise it!
Ok modern day kevlar yes! but aliens in this universe have alot better stuff then kevlar these days!
No normal lasguns do need to change their barrels but can take more of a beating since the power is turned down!
Longer barrels to help focus the beam so it has a smaller radius(more concentrated) thus increasing power!
Lasguns are cool but there are ignorant fools that think they are pathetic! But their not! if you overclock it to make it 1 megathule per shot you can eat away at half a meter of steel in less then a second!
Not with one shot; Space Marines are notoriously resistant to damage, although you might blind an unprotected Marine with a headshot. Side note, the black carapace isn't armor--it's a very large interface on the chest that connects the Marine's nervous system to powered armor.1) kill a space marine / chaos space marine with out a helmet on in a head shot, or would their black carapace save them?Umm. Yes, it can kill the average Ork with a single shot; it'd be like stopping a hippo with one shot, it's doable but half a dozen shots would work much better. But you don't want to shoot an Ork in the head; they're notoriously thick-skulled and stupid enough that they might not care about brain-death. The neck or spine is probably the weakest point.2) Kill and ork with a headshot?5.56 NATO ammunition and modern body armor is comparable to a lasgun and flak armor, meaning the armor will probably stop the shot but you shouldn't rely on it.3) penetrate modern day kevlar/dragon skin armour/ conventional modern body armour? (take the US interceptor or PASGT armour as an example)Lasguns have no moving parts (except possibly the trigger), almost never wear out with normal use and don't need cleaning except for the actual lens in the barrel. The lasing chamber/barrel will wear out only if one uses high-voltage settings, typically by using specially-designed batteries. (The main difference between a lasgun and a hellgun is that the latter is intended for those higher voltages--they last longer but the barrels still burn out.)4) Is the lasgun more reliable than an ak-47 / requires less maintenance?Fluffwise, the longer barrel allows a more energetic shot to be delivered and helps the Guardsman hold it more steadily.why does a longer barrel length increase accuracy if it is a laser weapon? The lasgun fires a pulsed laser, meaning it causes small explosions of intense thermal energy on the target--you might as well use a handgun. Even though the lasgun would cauterize the wound, there would be severe trauma to the surrounding bone and tissue. You need a continuous laser for cutting. It's possible that a lasgun would have a continuous setting as well as the pulse setting; there are many lasgun variants and it's roughly the same technology in both cases. Can't a lasgun be able to be used to amputate limbs?

Lsaguns are fine. I'd say they're on par with an AK for reliability and maintenance. It doesn't take much trainign to keep either running, apparently.
Sure, there's no reason a lasgun head-shot wouldn't drop a marine. That'd be why they usually wear helmets. And yes, one could drop an ork without too much trouble. If a lasgun is able to cause a fatal or incapacitating wound with 1 out of 3 hits on a creature twice as tough as a man, able to staple limbs back in place and keep fighting after being eviscerated then sure, with a head shot it would drop an ork like a sack or spuds.
If the lasgun wasn't effective I doubt it would be in such wide use...
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Lasgun is just a 40k excuse for a rifle. Its semi-automatic and fires a heat ray. A mag holds enough energy to fire anywhere from 10-30 shots. Its no different from a modern day m16 rifle, and since it require more maintenance I would say its less efficient than an Ak. BTW, there are Ak looking lasguns that are made by Nercromunda - they come on metral weapon sprues so if thats something that you are into...
To be honest, if I had an option I would just stick autoguns on every guardsman. They look better and are more realistic. Regarding the questions:
A normal rifle is str3 (i.e Ak/M16-lasgun)
A large caliber machine gun such as 50cal is Str4 (i.e Bolter )
A large caliber machine gun the fires explosive rounds is Str5 (i.e HB )
A grenade such as that from M203 is Str6 (i.e Grenade Launcher )
A 20mm/30mm flak round is Str7 (i.e Autocannon )
and so on and so forth....so in real life a 9mm round would probably be a Str2 weapon.
