Hey all, this is my first foray into the fluff section here so be gentle. I actually want to make a Blood Angel successor chapter down the road with the normal bells and whistles of symbols and a red/black color scheme to be determined, so they have their own look. What I'm questioning fluff wise is I actually like the Dark Angel icons a lot more, with the robed figure, and the sharp, angular wings and sword more than the chalice icons of the BA. So is it a fluff sin to mix the icons of the DA onto BA rhinos and the like even if I'm painting them red/black and claiming it to be a symbol of my BA successors? Like a BA blood drop symbol on one door and on the other the DA robed angel figure on a Rhino.
Or if that doesn't work, is it possible to work it into the history of the chapter that they work closely with the DA and value them as allies enough to honor their icons? Or is that an even worse fluff sin, mounting another chapters symbol onto your own armor, angering the spirit of armor piece?
Thanks for any comments!
Indeed. The Dark Angels aren't exactly the most co-operative bunch of people.
I don't think using the symbol would be too much of a problem, especially if you modified it. You don't need to write in any link to the DA whatsoever. Just call your chapter Angels of the Sword, or something, and use the symbol. Maybe inside a blood drop to show their heritage.
Or, just go with the symbol as is, but colored differently.

Well using Dark Angel Icons and some robed models and icons aren't really a bad idea so long as you keep some of the traits common in Blood Angel armies such as having Red based coloring. If you go for the same unforgiven theme like most Dark Angel armies you could base it on them being ashamed of the gene-curse and are on a quest to fix it or something. You could name your chapter something like "Blood Swords" or "Blades of Sanguinius" or whatever to give the chapters name a bit more Blood Angel character.
Dark Angels are famous for not trusting others and not working with Space Marine chapters not of their geneseed. Blood Angel and their successors especially as most Space Marines try to avoid fighting with Blood Angels due to their cursed-geneseed anyways. Dark Angels would likely avoid them unless absolutely possible.

Ahh ok, I tried to look up a bit of history between the two online but didn't find too much one way or the other so it was shot in the dark. But fluff wise for my BA they would be a sad sort, not ashamed of their flaws, but just having a heavy burden on their shoulders, more sullen I'd say. I'm not handy with the modifications yet like with green stuff, but I could try something... But most definitely like the robed angel figure and like their wings a lot more and the sword to represent their close combat focus.
But I'd still use blood drops and bones as lot of their standard icons use, especially for the Death Company. Red, black, and gold would still get a heavy use and in all other cases use BA background, tactics, etc. At least the consensus is that it would work, so I was just looking for the go ahead from the fluff masters ;-)
Looking over what people said, I like Perturabo's and Sonata's ideas. Still use the sword with wings but add a blood symbol on the blade. And I like the robed figures for being more dark like the DA because they will be named The Angels Fallen, following the naming convention like the Angels Sanguine and Angels Vermillion which are both second founding BA successors.
