why is it that their Technology only seems like 1-3 thousands years ahead of us... Mechwarrrior is only 1k years into the future and idk about you but i thin a 80ft Atlas mech beats a space marine... anyone care to elaborate why it seems like warhammer 20k was the stoneage for them?
"I have come to destroy you"
Well, first off, consider that humanity's expansion into the stars in the first place was not, well, graceful. Countless (we assume) factions spread out all over the place, so advances in technology can only be expected in isolated pockets, not galaxywide, and only after said isolated colony(ies) has learned how to feed and clothe itself, not to mention fight off the natives.
By the time of the Imperium, lots of newer weapons technology, such as plasma and las-weapons, had been discovered, but much of it was found on dead worlds, where the inhabitants were wiped out, leaving the technology and factories behind. My UNDERSTANDING, and I look to wiser fluff experts than myself on this one, is that the Imperium uses the technology, in the form it was found (i.e., no upgrades), as a form of memorial to those lost. That's the excuse, anyway.
Now, after the heresy, when the cult took over, a new "dark age" dawned. Like the "Science = God did it" era of the Holy Roman Empire here on Earth, any kind of active pursuit of advanced technology has been eschewed in favor of belief in the God-Emperor ("Faith is our shield!"), and even the Adeptus Mechanicus, on a whole, does not seek out any "new" forms of technology. From the start, and especially after the heresy, the Imperium has never been about "progress," rather the predominant interest is in preserving what once was and is now, at all costs. Change is bad. Silence is order. Big Brother is Watching.
It's also worth noting that this game was initially conceived:
a) As a sci-fi version of Warhammer Fantasy, which itself is dominated by "arcane" weapons and technology, for obvious reasons
b) In the midst of the terminally emo future-Gothic dystopian visions that were popular in 1980s-era sci-fi, hence the ornate, colorless, shadowy architecture and creepy, hooded, half-man half-machine characters that so often pass for "humanity."
I'd put real odds on GW starting with a look and feel that matched the two above conditions, and forcing the fluff to be subservient to the style. Never a really good idea, not even for the background text of a game. In fairness to the OP, while I've played marines before (and will again) I've never fully embraced the milieu either. When I first read through the Imperium's codices back when I first started in 40k, I heard in my head Simon Phoenix, Wesley Snipes' character from Demolition Man, saying, "Wait a minute! This is the future! Where are all the phaser guns?"
I'm sorry to say, if you want that, go with the Eldar, Tau, or Necrons.
i like Imperium and Chaos, Necrons are my second favorite. that is why i've almost given up on it, im in the middle of making my OWN WARHAMMER 40k and its not going to be much different but lots better, and i dont plan on making this like a real thing, just a fantasy in my head lolzoarz.
"I have come to destroy you"
I think the gothic background is realy good, so I never thought about the tech stuff.
First of all, to conquer anything in the universe is only fiction at this moment, and the loads of planets with right circumstances of life is also not more than fiction.
If fiction, why not half naked females with a huge chainsword? (what the hell is the chainsword anyway???)
ps.: lightsaber..., knife fight in personal shields... hyperspace... travel over lightspeed... etc.
Many times in history mankind has gone from a more enlightened stage of development back to a state of barbarism, it happened after the collapse of the western roman empire and many other times and there's no reason why the human development after 2k9 should be a straight line ever upwards.
Got a "good" rumour from a GW staffer? Forget about it, LO'ers know more than any random GW shop staffer.

The Dutch Legion
The game actually wasn't initially plotted so far ahead. In early developments Warhammer 4 000 (that isn't a typo it was Warhammer 4 000) was tested but the 4 000 name didn't fly as developers wanted to be set further in the future to have a more precedented game, so still in development but after initial fluff had been written it was changed to 40 000.
Ask me about the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike!!!
I'm not sure that the technology is that primitive. I mean being able 'stretch' a human out and then stick completly new organs in him...thats pretty impressive.
Warp Travel is immense, not to mention teleportation.
Polymorphine, I mean that is a drug that can shape shift a human!
Plasma guns are basically hand held nuclear reactors.
Also we have little comparison of strengths between Sci-Fi genres.
I mean for all we know bolters could rip clean throguh a mech warriors armour. The only reason why they can't do the same thing against a Land raider is because armour in the 41st millenium is also really advanced,
NOTE: I'm not saying space marines could actually take down a mech warrior its just an example that comparing sci-fi universes doesn't necessarily work.

"I have come to destroy you"
That is all FICTION, if You ask a scientist he`ll laugh on both Universe.
The point is, I can make up a fluff about long distance space travel in 2010 within 5 minutes. Here we go:
Oooops, they found some scripts in 1947 that dated just after Christ and it was full of gnostic thoughts about Jesus. (That is true!)
Ok, by this way (and now the fiction), someone can find a papyrus in an ancient egyptian tomb with the astral based travel in Oct 2009, he tries it, makes some tests. By August 2010 (next year) the Nasa will be able to teleport a small team to the Mars, by December 2010 (still next year) the first astralnauts will set up a camp in the Alpha Centauri system...
And the method takes only half an hour preparation... without the ancient prayers (they are not necessary at all!)
You can imagine whatever You want, that is the sense of Your fantasy!
Ps.: And You do not have to like or accept anything that only made up by somebody else`s imagination!
