I was wondering what about a breakawy necron factions that was not evil
for example instead of going about killing everyone they actually talk and get diplomatimes, we all know some lords retain their own memories and personality so its would be wrong too make some necron forces too not go around silently killing everyone but actually offering saving from the evil that is biological life..
I sorta hate the necrons for their typical "mindless robots invade the universe" i love the star wars droids where each one has some individuality....
I also hate the c'tan they need the necron more then the necrons need the c'tan, the necrons already have superb technology so all they are doing is feeding the c'tan for free... what if one necron lords said "p**s off c'tan or we will blast ya with our gausse guns....
what do you think could it work out?
They would cease moving, also necrons can't speak.
why would they, surely some can talk (i have read in the codex of them talking) the game DoW had talking pariahs etc...
sorta makes it nicer..
I mean really they are basically robot tyranids going around killing everything, what if they didnt kill and offered it like saving them etc.....
think about the necrons dont loose their memory that quickly, evertime they die they loose some of the memory, surely there would be necrons who still in some way think or like things... and i am sure someone would realise the trickery of the necrons.
It never says in the codex that the necrons loose all of their individuality its just lost and useless too them....why would you want too remember happiness when you cant feel it anymore...
A sort of breakaway faction, yes. Not evil? Well..., I can't see it happening.
There's two problems that simply cannot be overcome when it comes to making "good" Necrons:
1) They have an utter hatred of all life
2) The C'Tan pretty much refining that hate as well as dulling all other emotions
You're right when you say that there are independantly thinking Necrons in the upper echelons. Their minds were also dulled, but having aeons to roam about the galaxy (as so many of these independant ones are want to do in fluff, no doubt to know their enemy) it's kind of hard to fathom how mind-bogglingly intelligent and cunning these things are. So there is a base to work with there.
Addressing the C'Tan, alas, the Necrons simply cannot win. Living gods of the physical realm have placed their race in a state of eternal servitude. An independantly thinking Necron can no doubt see the strings of the puppetmaster, it might even be able to destroy one of the avatars of the C'Tan. However the C'Tan would in return simply erase from existence. He also would not be able to turn his robotic like foot soldiers. They would not understand his complex arguments and if any moves were made against them he would suddenly be on their threat list.
I think there could be a way for a Necron Lord to "save" some biological races, however it would not be for altruistic means.
One way is to simply have an enlightened Necron leader. It knows that the C'Tan wish to consume all life essence in the galaxy and no doubt it's quite happy to go along with it. However it has the foresight to question all the wanton slaughter. Eventually you're going to overfeed, to the point of extinction. Sure, the Necrons and C'Tan could just hibernate until life evolves once more, but wouldnt it be easier to make the cattle breed and take some of the herd to slake your hunger? So this Necron goes out, no doubt with the full blessing of ots C'Tan and uses fear tactics, maybe even taking a personal role in spreading fear throughout a planetary system (under a cunning guise a la Xenology). Eventually it makes the proposal that if regular tithes of life essence are given, not everyone need die. Some life is saved, in a horrible dark way, and entirely for selfish motives.
You could take it a step further and have the Necron Lord preserve the culture of the world for a variety of reasons. This Necron could simply be a scholar, having an indulgence to study the lesser races to see what makes them tick more than just biologically. Or it could preserve more of the culture as a sort of social experiment. Just as the Necrontyr began to worship the C'Tan, so too could other races. Perhaps it is his goal for all to venerate the C'Tan, so that sacrifices of life energy are willing and all the more sweeter?
There's probably plenty more ideas to work with. Unfortunately the Necron race is evil. There's no getting round that. However their leadership need not be dumb. They can have a razor sharp intellect and concoct plans within plans, or they could simply beat people down if you prefer having faceless evil. The average Necron will always be a golem with a hardwritten set of instructions. A Necron Lord you can have fun with, just, as aforementioned, it cannot be good in any sense of the word.
here is the thing, necrons lost their minds slowely, it wasnt instant (i dont think so anyway) so surely some necron lords from the old empire knew what the necrons were doing and left.
think about the c'tan need the necrons more then the necrons need the c'tan, think about it what do the c'tan do for the necrons....nothing much apart from some sort of spiritual help...(they are gods wea re fighting with gods we will always win etc) so why not have a breakaway faction that doesnt fallow the c'tan....they still view biological life as impure and in need of help...
take this example why wouldnt the necrons joins with adeptus mechanicus, the necrons are pure technology of the highest calibre and the adeptus mechanicus worship machines like literall gods, wouldnt they see necrons as gods themselves even join them..heck help them even..
You're forgetting one key point about the Necrons; they hate all life. Before they were Necrons and were still the Necrontyr, they developed nothing but unswerving hate for all other forms of life due to the bad hand they had been dealt resulting in a short lived, cancerous species and upon encountering the arrogance of the Old Ones.
They hated everything but their own kind long before the C'Tan showed up in their races history, and the C'Tan pretty much left nothing but that smouldering rage in their psyche after it had stripped them down to automatons.
Any help that a Necron would offer would simply be to further their own goals. They "help" other species by ending them or using the whole Pariah transformation (if you're fortunate or unfortunate enough to be Untouchable).
Even then, how do you break away from a God that created and enslaved you? Surely there's some failsafe to prevent such a thing from happening (though, perhaps like all good villains, the C'Tan are overconfident) or they simply have a link to their peons and can end them with a single thought. There's no doubt you could come up with some 40knobabble warp induced phenomenon that leads to some Necrons being free. They would still hate all life, wish to end it all, and become top dog. It's the nature of the 40k universe. There is no altruistic race striving for the good of all in the galaxy. It's a "I look out for me and mine. That don't include you 'less I conjure it does." situation.
Plus, Necron Lords are Necrontyr who were put into positions of power by the C'tan for being loyal, ruthless and cunning. They are not very likely to turn on their god because they get a case of long awaited conscience. And has been said before, if one did, then his soldiers wouldn't follow him, and the C'tan could easily tell the soldiers to just kill him.
So yeah, no to the hippie 'crons. Just like we won't find egomaniacal Tau, tamed Tyranids, pacifist Orks, or pacifist Berzerkers. Doesn't fit the universe, and goes completely against all the one dimensional villain race stencil that GW has cooked up. Only unaffiliated humans are allowed to be rational and tolerant of other races.
Also if the Mechanicus decided to 'help' the Necrons they would basically be hunted down by not only other fcations within the Machine Cult but also by the Inquisition and other Imperial forces.
Even IF (and that's a BIG if) there was a friendly Necron offshoot trying to be nice to other races, the other races in question are all paranoid and xenocidle to the extreme. Even the Tua aren't stupid enough to offer an olive branch to an ork or a tyranid. If they have had any prior contact with Necron forces then they will choose to shoot first and ask questions later.
I have to very strongly agree with the rest of the group: friendly necrons, never going to happen.
Not to mention that once the Dragon has been woken by the Necrons, it'll probably have its Necron servants slaughter all of the human Mechanicum.
It's theoretically possible, as the Necron forces are a loose affiliation of horde armies under a single lord, all with a common goal programmed in by the C'tan.
Theoretically though, if a C'tan thought that an army was gone, and said lost Necrons had no ships and their long-range comms broke down, then yes, theoretically they could be a "rogue" Necron army. Then, their commander might become disillusioned with the C'tan and turn on them, and fight them next time they came in contact. They wouldn't be nice, but they would have a reason to fight everyone.
He could (and almost certainly does) have a personality. The personalities of Necrons were destroyed (sans lords) in the creation of the robotic soldiers from the Necrontyr.
Terminator armor going critical would be like Three Mile Island only very, VERY angry, and carrying a hammer.
LO rules in a nutshell: Don't post unit costs, be polite, rep posts containing of win.
