The smell of ozone filled the air and sweat ran down Kor’La Ta’Nem’s brow and mixed with the tears on his cheek. He stared in
astonishment as the Barracuda air superiority fighter collided with the Gue’la tank. Nem screamed as it vanished in a ball of flame engulfing the tank and most of the troops around it. His barracuda drifted to the left and he zoned out and tracers soared all around
him. “Nem shake him off or you’ll end up like Les!” Roared the voice of Kor’Vre Bor’kan Kais’Nan known as Saber among the Kor in Val’kyra flight. He shook his head and drove back the tears.
“This is for you brother.” Nem whispered his war cry and hit the throttle. His triangular barracuda
soared forward with an assortment of weapons blazing closely followed by three Gue’la Fighter planes
known as Thunderbolts. Nem jerked the joystick left and right in attempts to get the humans off his
tail. Nem finally pulled up and flew directly up for a few seconds until the barracuda began to shake with the resistance of the water in the air. He pulled the airbrake and the barracuda flipped in the air to face the ground. Nem smiled wickedly and the two fighters were boxed in by his red targeting systems. He squeezed the trigger and green blobs of ionic energy floated silently down to meet the Gue’la pilots. The first fighter disappeared in a ball of brilliant green flame and then the second vanished as Nem unloaded a volley of missiles into its fuselage.
“Another wave of fighters inbound. Let’s pull out we wont be able to take them all.” Saber sounded
coolly over the com.
“No we can take them!” Nem roared still infuriated by Les’s death. Nem hit the throttle again and his
barracuda soared towards half a dozen little black dots on the horizon. Saber’s pearl white barracuda
pulled into formation next to his and Nem looked over. He could see Saber through the shielded cockpit.
He was busy bobbing his head as if in a conversation that Nem wasn’t part of. Nem didn’t care he was
just eager to kill as many Gue’la as he could in the name of his fallen friend. “Ok we have another
squadron inbound. Let’s take them for Les!” Saber confidently commented as his barracuda raced ahead of Nem’s, apparently Nem wasn’t the only one who wanted revenge.
The pair raced forward and as soon as the fighters came into range orbs of green energy flew forward.
The Gue’la scattered. Nem chose one, obviously the flight leader, and maneuvered to chase get
another shot off. He lined up the three red circles that were his manual sight and the targeting computer calculated the range. Nem placed the last circle on the cockpit and fired. The Ion rounds missed when the pilot preformed a sudden turn to the left. Nem cursed and angled up and prepared to fire. He squeezed the trigger and the ion rounds hit and green fire replaced the cockpit and tore a giant hole in the craft. Nem didn’t stop he just rolled his fighter over and spotted his next target. “This is for Les.”
I liked it cant wait to read more ^^
“Sir I beg you. I know my scores on the flight exams were low and that my simulator scores very similar but I wont let you down. Val’kyra is my last hope to become a pilot every other flight in the area has turned me down and if I don’t join yours then they said they would send me to Intel and make me a spook. So what is your decision may I join your unit?”
Kor’Saal Myn in a interview with Kor’Vre Saber
On board the ‘Ethereal Vengeance’ over Berog
Myn was happy, happier than he had been since the academy had told him they would accept him regardless of his low scores on the written exam. He was now a member of the veteran flight known as Val’kyra. He replaced Les who had died in the war of Tam’la’ya. Myn remembered following the campaign on the news and going over the war in class with his instructors. They had actually spent a few days talking about the different flights and had talked about the heroics of Les when he had saved his buddy Nem when he got shot down. Myn had chosen to do a report on Val’kyra for the assignment on the heroes of the empire. He had never dreamed he would be in Val’kyra.
Myn looked around the flight op room where he was told to wait until Saber his flight lead and Nem could meet him. He admired the sleek surfaces and fidgeted in his seat with excitement. He had talked to Saber before when he had been interviewed over the holo net but today he was going to meet his new flight. The door opened and Myn snapped to attention as his heart race. In the door stood two Kor one with red hair one with green both wearing pearl white body armor. “At ease Kor’La.” Saber said in a inviting voice as he gestured for him to sit back down.
“It is actually Kor’Saal still sir I haven’t received my rank yet.” Saber looked him in the eye and smiled.
“Well what are they waiting for boy you are about to go to war.” Saber poked fun at him but Nem just stood in the corner of the room looking highly disgruntled. “Nem get over here and shake the hand of your new flight member.” Saber ordered. Nem walked over and put on a fake smile to shake Myn’s hand. Myn took it with reverence and shook firmly.
“It is an honor to meet you and yet another honor to be given the chance to fly alongside you.” Myn smiled as Nem shook his hand and then Saber shook it as well. Myn looked from Saber to Nem and back again waiting for one of them to say something.
“So Myn when are they going to give you the right to fly combat missions because you will be useless without it.” Nem asked earning him a dirty look from Saber. Myn just smiled and passed it off.
“I am just waiting on a call from the captain. He is supposed to award me my wings today actually.” Myn said excitement welling up inside him yet again. The three Kor were silent for a moment as they considered what was going on. Myn took in each of their faces and took a breath. “I would like to thank you both again for accepting me into your unit. I wont let you down.”
“I took no part in accepting you into this unit but we will see about you letting us down.” Nem said harshly. Myn tried to shrug off his harsh words yet again. He was just hurting from losing Les. Myn smiled and made a gesture as if to say ‘my bad’. Saber walked over and smiled at Myn as he steered Nem into the fresher’s. Myn’s heart sank he had hardly met them and already half the flight
was against him and the other half was trying to protect him. This was all his fault.
Myn sat down and decided to get it off his mind by reviewing the file on Quin’Tau that was sitting on the op table. He opened the file and began reading the information. Myn took a breath as he finished the first page of the document which included several pictures of Quin’Tau. Myn looked through the rest of the packet which spoke in detail about the Berogians their culture and the Tau history
with them and further in the packet about the Chaos and what is known about them. Myn noted that the pictures in the latter section were gruesome and made his stomach churn.
Saber and Nem returned from the fresher and Myn smiled. “Have you read about Quin’Tau yet? It looks like we are going to attack a Chaos fleet while they have their pants down.” Myn said as he cycled through the information in his head.
“Good well I tell you what Myn me and Nem are going to go and settle in how about for your fist order you read through that packet and get ready to brief us in a dec deal.” Saber said as Nem walked directly out of the room.
“Yes sir I will brief you in one dec.” As he said it Myn flipped over to the next page of the packet and began reading.
Two dec later
Myn walked down the hallway quickly jumping with excitement. He was about to become a Kor’La and official warrior of the Empire. This was his moment and he tried to memorize every second of it. Myn came up to the Kor’El’s door and was surprised to see it open and the Kor’El standing just inside looking over a info pad. “Sir Kor’Saal Myn reporting as requested.” He said as he snapped to
attention in front of him. The Kor’El a tall and bulky Kor smiled at him as he did so.
“Ah it’s nice to meet you Kor’Saal.” The Kor’El extended his hand. “Oh yea I forgot, at ease.” Myn relaxed slightly and took the Kor’El’s hand. Myn stood in silence for a moment and the Kor motioned for him to follow him into his office. “So you are one of the new bloods getting ready to join us for this mission eh. Well you are in good hands son Val’kyra are possibly some of the best pilots
in the Empire.” He paused as he read something on the info pad. “This chaos fleet is going to be a pain in my d’yi. We should be able to crush them before this war starts though.” The Kor looked up suddenly as if remembering why Myn was there.
He opened a container on his desk and stood in front of Myn. “Kor’Saal I am proud to award you the rank of Kor’La may the Tau’va guide you.” The Kor’El said as he handed a small badge to Myn and shook his hand fervently. Myn smiled uncontrollably but didn’t feel as invincible as he had imagined he would. Myn smiled and looked at the badge it was the insignia of the Air caste with a single dot
in the center. Myn looked at the Kor but he was already pouring over another info pad labeled in large red letters Eyes only Myn had to wonder what the file was but he kept his mouth shut.
“Have a good day sir.” He said and saluted. The Kor saluted quickly and returned to the pad. Myn turned and attached the badge to his uniform as he walked down the hall humming lightly to himself.
2“We will strike at the heart of the chaos fleet before they have the time to gather their forces. We have no other choice the Berog sept must not fall to these creatures of the dark. So my Kor brothers ready your ships and fighters we go to battle today!”
Kor’O high strike in a statement to all Kor officers in the nearby Kor’vattraOn board the Ethereal Vengeance on rout to link up with the Kor’vattra“So you guys really ran into Sev back there?” Myn was shocked and sad he had missed it, it would
have been great to meet the whole group from Tam’la’ya. Saber looked up at him as he changed into
his flight suit.“We sure did. It was good to see him again but honestly I could have gone without. Seeing him
reminds me of Les and that still hurts.” Saber explained as he started putting on his armor
plates. “Just hurry up and get your kit on the whole fleet has been ordered to be ready for
deployment.” Myn nodded and sealed his flight suit on. He ran through the training simulations in his
mind over and over again. Myn was nervous but he couldn’t let the other two know that. He knew he
was on thin ice as it is being a wild card pilot.“So let’s go over the plan again. I just want to make sure that I have it right.” Nem said as he
holstered his pulse pistol with a knowing glance at it. Myn sighed and stood up strait.“We are going with the first Kor’vattra to attack the chaos fleet while their numbers are manageable.
We will hit them fast and hard in rapid succession and then we will wait and take out the ships that
come in over the next few rotaa. Hopefully we will end the war before it happens. If we fail we will fall
back and join with the second Kor’vattra and aid in the defense of Quin’Tau. We will attack the chaos
forces in one dec some of the vattra are already inbound for the fleet and will be in range in… ten
rotaa we are going to be in the final assault group.” Myn finished and took a big breath. He looked
around at the Kor around him. There was Nem and Saber and beyond that in the big changing room
there was Kor from dozens of different worlds.“Ok well we have a dec let’s go to the cantina and get some food. No drinks though.” Saber finished
with an air of command. The three Kor walked to the exit and then to the cantina. Myn keyed the
door to open and it split in to and slid to either side. They walked in and sat down at a table in the
corner of the dining area. A drone buzzed over and placed menus down in front of them.“What may I get you to drink?” The drone asked in a mechanical voice. Saber spoke for them.“Three caf one with cream and one with sugar one black.” Saber said and Myn was shocked, how had
he known he drank his caf black. Myn shook his head and began looking over the menu.In the first assault waveKor’La Al’pek or just Pek to his friends prepared to take off in his barracuda. He and his wing leader
were to fly escort for one of the three Mantas on board the Gal’leath that he was stationed on. Pek
ran through his pre flight checks and looked at the chronometer on his HUD. He had five until the
vattra came out of warp space. He watched the time drain and took a deep breath. Finally the
chronometer reached zero and almost simultaneously the alarms sounded. “All flights launce I repeat,
all flights launch.” Pek hit the throttle and his barracuda soared forward and out into space. He looked
and made sure he was to the right of the manta as they maneuvered right. Then the chaos fleet
came into view. Dozens of grotesque ships sat on the edge of an asteroid belt and from the looks of
it their primitive technologies had yet to detect the Tau fleet.“All Kor increase to assault speed. Hit the big ships first.” Pek watched as the chaos fleet slowly
realized they were under attack and sprang to life. Pek could see hundreds of small fighters launch
just moments later and head for the group of Kor. “Here they come all escorts move ahead at full
speed and don’t let them get to the Mantas.” Pek eased the throttle forward till it couldn’t go
anymore and then he waited for a few brief moments. Just a little longer till they were in range. The
targeting reticule turned from a warm green into a bright red and the seeker missiles instantly found
locks.“All Kor open fire!” Pek flicked a switch and four seeker missiles zoomed ahead of him. He didn’t see if
they hit or not but he found a target and switched back over to his ion cannon. He waited until the
fighter filled his targeting reticule and then they both fired. Rounds passed balls of ionic energy in
space and Pek broke to the left. The Fighter followed him. He could tell because he could see the las
fire pass by the cockpit of his yellow barracuda. Pek broke left and then activated retro thrusters.
The chaos fighter soared past him and pek fired into its tail severing the craft in two.He cheered for a moment and then stopped abruptly as more shots flew by him. He pulled up and took
a glimpse at the silent battle unfolding in the distance. The Kor’vattra was just getting within range
and their rail gun batteries opened up on the chaos ships. In-between both forces barracudas and
chaos fighters weaved in-between each other and flashes of violent energies. Pek took a breath and
hit the throttle zooming into the fray.Pek weaved through the battle taking shots here and there as he went. “All Kor pilots move in and
attack the lead chaos cruiser we need all available guns on that cruiser!” he smiled, he was under the
cruiser. He pulled up and targeted an auto defense turret mounted on the ship. He targeted and fired
the turret exploded silently at the orbs of energy collided with the ammunition store. Pek jumped as
his barracuda shook violently. Pek pulled up again and his barracuda turned around. The fighter a crude menacing vehicle was bearing down on Pek all cannons blazing. Pek sped up and
soared past the fighter but the fighter quickly maneuvered around and got back on his tail. Pek
maneuvered beautifully soaring close to the cruiser weaving in-between spires that protruded from
the ship. The fighter followed Pek from one side of the cruiser to the other and then into space. Pek soared
directly for the hull of a tau cruiser turning on his distress signal so that the auto defense turrets
would fire on the fighter tailing him. He turned and flew along the hull for a few moments then he
broke left and looked behind him. “Bloodfire!” He roared as the barracuda shook and sirens blared, he
had been hit.“Warning right engine is destroyed and damage is at thirty percent.” The soft mechanical voice
alerted him in an unnervingly calm voice. Pek broke left again and spun his barracuda over. “Warning
inbound missile.” Pek’s heart froze. He paused for just a second in fear, that was all it took. Another
silent explosion. In the central op roomMyn took a breath. They had been talking when the sirens went off and then the flights had been
called to the central op room. Myn had taken his seat with Nem and Saber near the top of what the
pilots called ‘the pit’ and then they sat and waited for the two hundred Kor from all over the ship to assemble there. Several raik’or later the Kor’El in charge of the ship walked into the center of the pit.
The doors of the briefing room hissed shut and the lights around the edges dimmed to bring the
attention into the pit and towards the Kor’El.“Kor I am sorry to say that we are going to have a long rotaa ahead of us.” Myn’s smile faded and he
swallowed hard. “The first and second waves have hit the fleet. Things are not going well. The chaos
had more ships in the area than our initial scans revealed.” The Kor paused to read a few statistics on
his personal info pad. “Looks like the first wave ships are all but destroyed and the second wave is barely holding in. The Aun are currently deciding if we should pull out or not. I think we need to get
there and break their back with the third and final wave. So all pilots need to get ready for the flight
of your life. We will be in the battle in ten raik’or regardless if the Aun decide to pull out. There are
Kor dying out there and they will not die in vain.” The Kor in the room instantaneously cheered but
there were those like Myn who were so shocked by the Kor’El’s defiance that they were dead silence.
Saber stood and Myn and Nem followed.Together they slipped out of the op chamber and walked briskly towards the flight deck. Myn walked
in quick unison thinking about the mission ahead of him, his first mission, Myn took another deep
breath. The three Kor walked onto the flight deck through the airlock. They were followed by a group
of pilots using the same deck. Myn walked over to his barracuda and ran his hand along the fuselage.
Then he climbed the ladder and into the cockpit. He sat down and strapped in.Myn ran through the pre flight checks like he had in simulations and training flights a thousand times
but this time it was real and that scared him a little bit. In just a few raik’or he would be in the sights
of Chaos weapons, weapons that had already killed hundreds of Kor today. “All flight checks for
Val’kyra three are green over I am ready for flight.” Myn barely realized he was calling in on the radio.“Tau’va Myn remember me and Nem got your back today just try not to get too far from us and you’ll
be fine. Remember your training.” As Saber finished a siren sounded and a voice came in on the
intercom.“All Kor and Shas to your battle stations the assault has begun. Val’kyra you have point out there you
are cleared for takeoff.” The voice switched over to the flight only com as he gave Val’kyra its orders. Myn pulled on his helmet and it sealed with his bodysuit. His HUD came up in various shades of
green and a status bar for each Saber and Nem in the upper left corner.“Ok Myn your out second follow my lead Nem cover his back.” Saber commanded in a way that
demanded obedience. Saber’s barracuda lurched forward and into space. Myn hit the throttle and
followed. The barracuda soared forward and moments later he felt the ships artificial gravity disappear as he passed through the force shield that kept the atmosphere in the flight deck. Myn lined his barracuda up on Saber’s right wing and they maneuvered to face the battle in the distance. Myn’s heart skipped a beat as the battle came into view.In the distance there were mangled wrecks fields of debris and the silent ominous flashes of weapons
fire. Myn watched as a Tau cruiser that read on his radar as the ‘Benevolence’ was torn in two by a
broadside from a chaos ship. A moment later there were a series of brilliant white flashes and the
cruiser exploded sending debris in every direction. “This is it Kor today we crush our enemies.” Saber
said sounding unnervingly calm. Myn couldn’t help but hope by the stars that he was right and that
today it would be the enemy who were crushed.
