Well I made a little bit of fan fiction for the old Chaos Space Marines which I hope all of you can stand, and maybe even enjoy. There is this one mention in the Chaos Codex of the Angels of Flame being the most recent chapter to fall, and I thought I would expand upon that.To help me do that, I brought in those most devious of the Chaos Space Marines, the Alpha Legion, and ascribe even more atrocities to them, and those Angels of Flame.Of the activities of the Alpha legion and their ultimate goal none can say for certain, as we scarcely know whether their failures are successes and vice versa. However their dark goals and shadowy agendas have been proven to be terrible threats to the Imperium of man. Corrupted worlds, unspoken-of heresy and ruined strongholds are their harbingers, and cunning assaults their greetings. This legion is a hive of flesh-burrowers in the Imperium. Their command structure defies all attempts to understand, but they are led on operations by Terrible Daemon-Princes, cunning sorcerers and the most ruthless of lords. All of them fatted and wizened by millennia of conflict, and still desiring. One Sorcerous threat is the former Asartes named Theadar Sylla, a leader who was rediscovered by Imperial intelligence in M40 amongst various champions of chaos and their war bands taking advantage of the Imperium’s distraction during the Macharian heresy. He started a blood feud between the Angels of Flame and the Alpha legion which was to have disastrous consequences for the Imperium. The Angels of Flame...
It was during this time that his war band of traitors and apostates intercepted the ships taking a particularly large batch of the chapter’s newest recruits back from their gestative slumber on Kythos VI to their fortress monastery out of the Ghoul Stars. Kythos VI was a deathworld with a primitive, human population located within the Ghoul stars, only discovered due to it’s close proximity to the prosperous Agri-world of Jeensholm, and only occupied as a recruitment center for the Angel’s of Flame. The geneseed and suitable recruits having been graciously provided by the Angels of Flame, and found with Sylla’s dark prognostication, he corrupted the five dozen new recruits to the ways of chaos. The guardians were thoroughly looted of all materials Sylla could abuse for his dark purpose. The Angels of Flame knew not of what happened to their recruits, assuming them to be lost in a terrible warp accident.
A little over two centuries later the Angels of Flame suffered a similar such incident, this time the sorcerer Sylla goaded his enemies mercilessly. The Angels of Flame visiting the planet for recruitment trials were greeted by a horrific sight; the great plateau on which they staged their trials was defiled by slaughter. Wild packs of Daemon-Beasts ran amongst the corpses and foul symbols fashioned in flesh and bone. In the small, bloodstained fortress they found a handful of broken, terrified folk, who all told a similar story, and wept and pled for the gift of peace.
The “Angels of Flame” had arrived a short while before. Contrary to custom, they demanded no less than 1 out of every 10 eligible boys from amongst the people of the world and demanded that they bring a sizable escort to the great plateau. Some stayed away, but most came, and no less than 3,000 aspirants with 8,000 escorts arrived. The “Angels of Flame” demanded that each of the boys pick a person they knew from amongst the escort. When such was done they were told to kill this escort before the escort killed them, and the “Angels of Flame” forcibly barred any and all from leaving the plateau, killing those who resisted. After the terrible slaughter the corpses were arranged in ritual patterns and a powerful sorcerer unleashed the packs of daemons upon the escorts and aspirants as the guards stood by in their power armor. The aspirants and escorts died terribly by the thousand. Once the daemon beasts had their fill, only about a hundred the most twisted, ruthless and hardened aspirants remained, along with 500 escorts. Having been given clubs, knives and whatever else suited the cause, the remaining recruits were told that the escorts planned to murder them all and escape. They were bid to finish the massacre of their escorts, who had once been their tribesmen and kin. The young and corrupted minds of the aspirants saw no flaws in this and set to the deed with haste. After a gladiatorial pairing of the aspirants with subsequent duel to the death only a few less than 40 were deemed suitable to join the “Angels of Flame”. The rest were left on the plateau with the Daemon-beasts and maimed escorts who had been hidden by the press of the carnage, awaiting their end.
Putting the pieces together the chapter was wholly taken by rage. After punitive expeditions against suspected compliant persons, they left Kythos VI vowing never to return. To erase the stain of such a humiliation, the chapter deemed it necessary to bombard the planet from orbit, ruining the planet into little more than a desert. All human life died in that firestorm and the following environmental cataclysm, though small insects and primitive life survived near the poles and live on near salty pools near the poles of Kythos VI to this day. The Angels of Flame took to saying that life forms with any vestige of thought could not stand to live upon such a planet where such infamy happened.
Just a few years later, the Chapter received reports that multiple fringe planets in the ghoul stars had suddenly fallen to an unknown invader and that Jeensholm was nearly overtaken by chaos cults. Only the remnants of the PDF remained, fighting a losing war of attrition in the streets against a cultist army still numbering roughly 800,000. The Imperial Guard regiments stationed on nearby Pylathis were broken and stranded their by elements of the Alpha Legion, now heading towards Jeensholm. Their leader was none other than the apostate Asartes sorcerer, Theadar Sylla.
Tasked with a crusade of re-conquest, the Angels of Flame were interested in nothing other than vengeance. Taking the whole might of their chapter they wiped out the sparse cultist forces on the fringe planets of Urbanu, Hetsvedden and Svindver with a brutality that bordered on psychotic. They cut down, on average, 1/3 of the planets’ populations as “a lesson”. When they came upon Pylathis, they asked the scattered Imperial guard regiments the Alpha legion’s locations on the planet. The remnants of the Imperial Guard command responded that the Alpha legion stranded them on Pylathis and left their cultist cells on the planet to be wiped out, evacuating towards Jeensholm. The Angels of Flame branded the Guards weaklings and heretics, slaughtered most of them, and razed 73% of Pylathis’ cities. They headed towards Jeensholm, where they knew the remnants of the PDF where no doubt keeping the Alpha legion busy, with fighting, or sacrificial ritual.
When they arrived on system, the Chapter Fleet found Sylla’s Alpha legion fleet orbiting Jeensholm. The sorcerer had given his fleet specific orders. The Alpha Legionnaires abandoned their fleet and left it in orbit, the skeleton crew and slaves under strict orders not to engage, they fled into the warp before sending out all of the forces in boarding parties and landing craft. Sending 3 quarters of their forces in dangerous boarding actions and the other quarter to reinforce cultist positions on the surface, they forced the Angels of Flame to fight everywhere. Some Boarders seized control of ships, detonated them, and escaped to the planet, most were defeated and the remnants hid within the ships of the Angels of Flame, ambushing the crew, and scuttling into the unknown depths of the ancient vessels. From time to time they would attempt to summon daemons onto the hold, and one of these remnants managed to detonate a ship nearly a month after the initial engagement and fled to reinforce the surface.
These actions succeeded in the most part because the Angels of Flame sent over half of their forces to the planet to confront the Sorcerer Sylla with his personal guard, and tens of thousands of cultist warriors. The Planetside Angels of Flame cut through the cultists in the thousands. When Sylla and his personal guard broke out and repositioned in the planetary fortress which lay inside the capitol city of Jeensholm, the Angels of Flame surrounded the city of 40 million and razed it methodically until they reached the planetary fortress. The traitors astutely defended themselves and the Angels of Flame made their greatest mistake. Knowing that the bulk of the Alpha legion forces were tiny bands in their fleet along with 60% of their remaining forces, the Chapter Master gave the order for the fleet to bleed out more and more of their forces into the ground assault, thinking that fresh Space Marines would aid their cause greatly.
Blinded by rage, the Chapter Master could not know that quite contrary to being “fresh”, these fleet Angels of Flame were doubtless the most stressed amongst them. Months of being on guard, having “brethren” in Angels of Flame power armor going “wild” and killing true Angels, the skittering, the whispering voices in night, the bodies found in silent grotesque agonies to represent the Eightfold star, and acts of sabotage pressed greatly on their minds. With more and more heading to the surface, the remainder became more and more paranoid as they lost hope. Most of the Angels of Flame came from Kythos VI, after the rage left them and Kythos VI was wholly ruined, they had started to harbor certain thoughts of regret. By this time, even the strongest willed amongst them harbored secret doubts, and a great many of the Angels of Flame now killed for the sake of killing, cultist and Imperial citizens alike. The Chapter Master asked the squads from the last batches to lead the final assault on the planetary fortress. He told them that a great many of the planetside Angels of Flame were suffering from severe stress and he wanted to relieve the bravest of his Space Marines. It was the last straw and even mountains can be ground down with sufficient effort.
Maybe it was one of them, or two, or possibly three gunned their chapter master down before their brother-sergeant could stop them. Within minutes the whole of the chapter engaged in bloody fratricidal combat. Most of the Angels of Flame from the fleet, having experienced such a thing before, lost what was left of their reason. They completely succumbed to paranoia and immediately went on rampages, scattering by band into the ruins of the capital city. They lived up to their moniker, the Angels of Death, by slaughtering all they came across. Those who had succumbed to the love of killing, banded together and did much of the same. The ones still on the fleet, having seen what was transpiring on the ground and their minds rotten with paranoia, fought ship to ship. In three months time there was not an Angel of Flame alive who owed allegiance to the Imperium. Whether Sylla and his band of Alpha Legionnaires died by the hands of their own creation is unknown, though the fact that the Angels of Flame are now renegades, there can be no doubt.
That was actually a very entertaining bit of fanfiction. Good Job.
Does anyone else have comments, criticism? Or did Guarder say in very few words what could be needlessly drawn out into very many?
Very well thought out at the very least. A believable story with enough 'canon' hooks to make it fit into the universe quite neatly.
