Has anyone noticed that there never really is a true protagonist? Even though humanity is the focus for much of the "good" side, they're overzealous about eradicating all other forms of aliens and people of free thought, and thus become an antagonist to others. While being a protagonist doesn't always mean you're the good guy, each codex makes their respective race the protagonist, and thus I wonder: who is the real protagonist? The 4th edition rulebook now gives fluff-credit to all races, and thus that can no longer mean that humanity is the protagonist.
I would like comments, although maybe no one will since I might be the only one who found this interesting.
Every whisper of the future from the Warp speaks of a hundred battles lost, a thousand lives devoured and a million enemies born. -- Inquisitor Lord Babel
What a intressting point of view... In your eyes then you see the Tau as the Main good guys now??

If you asked me, I would have to say the Tau could be considered "good". Even though they are aliens and most times enemies of humanity, according to the imperium at least. This is because they preach a message of tolerance and working together to make everything work out for everyone. Then again, you could also argue that even though the Imperium is a harsh and totalitarian government, they are just trying to save humanity from extinction. So although their methods may be extreme and oppressive, their motive is ultimately for the good of the human race, at least in their somewhat misguided minds. And since they see non humans as threats they choose to nutrilize them in the most affective manner. For the Imperium, the ends justifys the means.

Its war..there is no "good guy" or "bad guy", there never is, there are simply two (or in this case like a hundred) opposing forces. Eventualy somebody will win, the winner will be recognised as the side that was right and the loser will be blamed for everything..just like in every other war that was ever fought. From what I can tell though the only race that Isn't "bad" in some way are the Eldar and the Tyranids, they're just trying to stay alive.Tau are power hungry communists,Dark eldar are just sick,Orks kill things for no good reason,Chaos is just plain evil,Necrons are just plain evil, and the Imperium is a burtal facist regime bent on universal domination (evil)
I think the main protagonist would probably be the Imperium though...since we are the Imperium 38 thousand years in the past,it just makes sence for things to be seen from the Imperial point of view.We can't very well assume to know what the orks are thinking (though I imagine it's something along the lines of "Hmm...I wonder if I can eat that..eh who cares lets kill it!")
Well to me Tyranids are the protagonists. They are completely consuming all the races genes and using them to perfect a species. All amesh into one consciousness, The Hive Mind. It's all a point of view. Then againt they are alien killing machines that rape planets are thus the ultimate evil as well. So it's all perspective. All armies are good and bad depending on which way you look at it. I just can't see Chaos, Dark Eldar, or Necron really being good so they are protagonists.
Honestly, you can't have a protagonist or antagonist when every race looks at themselves as the good guys. Everyone looks at themselves as the savior of the universe, and all the rest as the filthy interlopers. I mean, there are variations - Necrons are doing the work of the C'Tan, and everyone else is worthless; Nids are eating everything, and everyone else is in the way; Humans are conquering in the name of the Emperor, and everyone else is a witch/heretic/xenos scum. You get the picture.
If you really want to divide the game into the good guys and the bad guys, look at the Forces of Order and the Forces of Chaos. Imperium, Eldar, Tau on one end, and the Orks, Chaos, Dark Eldar, Necrons, and Nids on the other. But like I said before, from the point of view of each army, they're the ones doing the right thing.
@ Nayra: Protagonists are the good guys, and Antagonists are the bad guys, I think you got them mixed up ^_^
The only race that could be considered a 'good' force in the universe is the Tau, the only thing even close is the Imperium of man, which would all jump off bridges in blind sapport of the emperor, if he told them to.
A. Humans and Tau have gotten along fine before the emperor found out about them, trading, and even joining whole cultures were common on the eastern fringe.
B. The Tau always offer a non-violent way of being claimed or colonized to worlds they go to. 'join our culture, embrace us and we will embrace you the same', i dont remember tyranids, orcs, DE, OR IG/SMs having such an open outlook on it.
C. They allow any army to surrender/form a truce, even if they have the battle won. Theirs a story in the codex of the Tau allowing a SM officer to watch the tau warriors train, in an attempt to coax a surrender out of him, even when the Tau had the upperhand on the battle in question.
D. They even let humans, kroot, and any other race fight along side them, and are given equal respect, so long as are fighting for the greater good.
Im kind of anti-imperium of man, just because they sure do a lot of shady, self-rightous, war mongering *****, to still think of themselves as the only light in the universe. :glare:
And i know a lot of you SM or IG guys are gunna disagree with the above, but heres a little question youd wanna ask yourself, personally... if you had to be stuck in a dark alley with a Space marine, a Tau Warrior, an orc, a Nid, a DE, etc... who would you choose?
<img src='http://www.arbytech.com/ar/images/bliiiing.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
yeah...but the Tau offer two choices to the planets they conguer "join us" or "die"...if they were really good don't you think "just ask us and we'll go away an leave you alone" would be an option?
and as far as the dark alley thing it depends. if the DE was a woman I'd have to think about it..I'm a fiend for goth chics
