I was just reading some Black Templar fluff and noticed a bit about the High Marshal Helbrecht. The story about his rise through the ranks was aided by the notice he received for his many violent campaigns and a position in the Sword Brethren was soon secured for him after he slew a Vampire which had risen to power on Cephian IV.
This is the first I've heard about vampires in 40k, can anyone tell me more?
Is this "Vampire" Vampires, some kind of xeno species that's vampire'ish, or some sort of new mutant/abhuman race that's vampire'ish?
I can't even find any other mention of them and was hoping LO might be able to shed some light on it.
Could be any of those really..
Thematically, I think the C'tan were supposed to be the 'vampire counts' of 40k (they lead 40k's 'undead' and drink the life essence of other beings) but there's definitely room for haemivorous species (it's a pretty common evolutionary choice).
For it to be noteworthy that a space marine slew one though it would have to be pretty damn powerful. That makes the abhuman thing sound more likely to me, as an entire species that dangerous would probably have received a bit more attention from the Imperium over the years.
Well, unless there's only like 4 of them but.. oh, hello C'tan!

Vampires were detailed in the 1st edition of 40K. They are psychic creatures that feed fom the life-force of their victims. Vampires come from the warp and look like half human-bat alien things in their true form. They often get themselves into positions of power to protect themselves. They are only ever seen in small groups or alone and have no armies or culture other than that they take over.
Oh, thanks.half human-bat alien things from the warp
I'm still a bit curious so if anyone has anymore info on them I'd apreciate it.
Um, there's a whole legion of them. Blood Angles I think they're called?
Hence why Abbadon's the Everchosen and people have a nasty habit of forgetting that Helbertold guy.Um, there's a whole legion of them. Blood Angles I think they're called?
There are a few more references scattered around I recall there's a throwaway mention in Farsight's original fluff, which is about as detailed as most mentions of vampires in 40k.Apparently they look like Cythor Fiends. Who turned invisible rather than deal with the Black Templars.look like half human-bat alien things in their true form.
