History: When the 403rd Florien regiment was formed, they were assigned to defend the newly Florien system, bordering the Tau empire. The Space Marine Chapter "Night Warriors" were responsible for liberating the system from the Tau, but it was a long
and bloody war. The Night Warriors no longer had the manpower to protect the system, thus the 403rd Florien were forged. Since the region was just recently colonized, there were only a few thousand humans living there, not enough to form an entire Imperial regiment. Troopers from the 43rd Cadian and tanks from the 100th Verholand regiments were assembled in the Florien system, to supply the nessesary manpower to create a regiment to defend the system. At first the 403rd only had just under fifty thousand fighting men and 6000 tanks and artillery pieces. This issue was vastly
ignored because the only surviving threat at the time were small bands of feral orks on Florien V. Over the corse of 300 years, the Florien system experienced a massive population growth and could finally supply their own troops. The regiment now grew to over 300,000 fighting men, with nearly 59,000 tanks and artillery pieces. This all changed however, when an Ork warboss "Gazbork" united the Feral orks of Florien V to join him in a mighty Waaagh!!. Florien V was crushed in a matter of weeks. World apon world was crushed under Gazborks foot. Soon, only four planets in the Florien system remained Imperial, Florien IV, Florien III, Florien II and Florien I. Gazborks ork horde next. Decended on Florien II, with the intention of crushing another planet in the name of the Waaagh!!. Troops were taken fron the Florien III garrison force to aid the strained forces on Florien II. This did tip the balance in favour of the Guard, but it also left Florien III dangerously exposed. Nobody expected what was to happen next. The Tyranid Hive Fleet Gargant descended on Floien III, and with next to no garrison force, the planet was consumed in little over three days. Though Florien III was now forever lost, this did aid in the fight on Florien II. Not only did Florien II have a massive guard force protecting it (Florien II and III garrison forces), a huge chunk of Gazborks orks (including Gazbork himself) left Florien II to fight the Tyranids. Gazbork left his chief Mek Gutsmek to command the remaining orks, but they did not last long. Gutsmek and his orks were crushed. With Florien II secured, and the Orks slowing the Hive Fleets advancement, the 403rd had time to prepare. The garrison fron Florien III were sent to Florien IV to defend the capital for when the Tyranids advanced past Gazborks orks.
The last thing they needed was a Tau battleforce to attack the system. The Florien system is on the border of the Tau empire, and when the Tau found out about the Tyranids they sent a battleforce to colonize Florien I, to protect their border. The Garrison on Florien I were no pushovers however, they held of the Tau for weeks before they could gain a foothold on the planet. General Hawk knew the garrison would eventually fall, so he sent evacuation shuttles. Nearly 7,000,000 civillians were evacuated from the planet and were sent to Florien IV. The Tau were well hated by the Florien people, but if they wanted to combat the Tyranids let them. They may even slow the beasts when the orks eventually fail. Florien IV and Florien II were now the only Imperial worlds left in the sector. The general declared a state of emergency, the 403rd called for aid from the nearby Night Warriors Space marines, but not only were they tied up with Eldar raiders, they were also weeks away from the sector. The 403rd were on their own.
In a desprate attempt to bolster their numbers, conscripts were reqruited. Men as young as 14 were called to fight the Tyranid menace. Though this increased their numbers to nearly 900,000 men, these men were hardly soldiers. They could bearly afford a weeks time to train these boys.
When the orks were finally depleted by the hive fleet, over 700,000 men and 50,000 tanks and artillery pieces were sent to Florien II, the hive fleets next stop. The Florien II garrison were at this point, seasoned veterans. The imperial commanders were relying on these men to hold the line once the inexperienced and young conscripts fail. After three days of preparing the defences, hive fleet Gargant fell apon Florien II. The orbiting Imperial ships provided little defence, and were destroyed in a matter of hours. Millions of tyranid beasts fell apon the brave defenders of the Imperium. At first the mass artillery was enough to hold them off, this tactic only held true for about five hours. The Tyranids were simply too numerous to be stopped with artillery alone. As they apprached closer, the thousands of conscripts were sent to their forward positions to weaken the horde, though the sheer number of conscripts created a massive ammount of lasgun fire, they were not able to hold. Thousands of young men were flayed alive by hordes of gaunts and warrior beasts. The remaining conscripts fell back to the bunkers to join their veteran comrades. The surviving conscripts numbered less than 5000. This position faired leagues better than the forward positions, the majority of the defenders were hardened warriors, and the tyranids finally came within range of the tanks. The guardsmen held the line for hours, but the Tyranid horde seemed without end. Morale began to slip, though they were holding the line, the sheer number of foes was staggering.
Suddenly, hundreds if Tau gunships filled the sky, dropping out thousands of Firewarriors and battlesuits. They unloaded into the tyranid horde, cutting down thousands of the beasts with their advanced plasma weaponry. The Imperial defenders were now conflicted; should they continue attacking the Tyranids, or drive back their Tau rivals? The 403rd decided to embrace the saying "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and aided their Tau counterparts. It was an uneasy alliance, but it had to be done. The Tyranid threat threatened more than just the Imperials. The Imperials stormed from their bunkers, their tanks rolled forward in an attempt to aid their temporary allies. A massive gunline of intergrated guardsmen and firewarriors pumped out volley after volley at the horde. The Lemon Russ' and hammerhead gunships took out swaths of the storming gaunts. The Imperal/Tau temporary partnership was going well, but the hive fleet was simply too massive. They would eventually be consumed if things didn't change. Thousands of Carnifex stormed forward alongside their gaunt comrades, these beasts did not fall easy. Many were taken down by the united gunline, but many Carnifex managed to breach the line. Many were slaughtered, imperial and Tau alike. The 403rd and Tau had no choice but to fall back to the bunkers. After the slaughter in close combat, only 6000 firewarrior/battlesuits and just under 76,000 guardsmen remained. There were still millions of them. They would not have the ability to hold. The 403rd commanders were now conflicted. They could stay and aid the Tau; but they would eventually fail. They could also withdrawl, leaving the Tau and Florien II at the mercy of the Tyrands, they would fall back to Florien IV and defend the capital. They were about to pull out their men, when a lone stormtrooper sergeant began to speak. He said "Men of the 403, if we do not stop this threat here and now, it will spread! If left unchecked, it could threaten the Imperium of man itself! I for one, would rather go down fighting than retreat and allow that to happen! We are guardsmen, and we must hold the line or die trying!" the remaining guardsmen, and even the Tau felt wieght to these words. The Sergeant raised his powersword and charged forward, his elite squad following him. The unified defenders let out a mighty warcry and followed him. Suddenly, massive orbital bombardments wreaked havock on the swarm. Drop pods fel from the sky, Iron clad warriors burst out. The Nightwarriors Chapter had answered the 403rds cry for aid. Space marine, Guardsmen and Firewarrior alike demolished the oncomming horde. Many lives were lost however, in the process of the battle, nearly 600,000 guardsmen, 100,000 firewarriors and 567 Space marines were lost.
Finally, the smoke cleared, the ground riddled with tyranid coarpses. Hive Fleet Gargant was stopped in it's tracks. The Imperal guard and the Tau had vanquished them. In the Aftermath of the battle the Tau withdrew, they felt enough blood had been shed today, they would not engage the guard on that day.
In the aftermath of the battle, the 403rd regiment was nicknamed "Xeno Slayers", currently they are in the proccess of Reclaiming Florien V.

Pretty cool backstory. Nothing groundbreaking, but I always find it's better to stick with a solid, believable story than push the boundaries of artistic liberty and risk sounding ridiculous. Only really one thing I would suggest: make it a splinter of Hive Fleet Gargant. It would probably take more than 1 regiment and a few thousand fire warriors to defeat an entire Hive Fleet, especially in a single day.
Other than that, nice bit of fluff for your regiment.
um... that's more than half a chapter X.X567 Space marines were lost.Conflicting information here?he Space Marine Chapter "Night Warriors" were responsible for liberating the system from the Tau, but it was a long

Conflicting information here?[/QUOTE]
Yeah I just corrected that ... Thanks for pointing that out
as for the Nightwarriors losing more than half their chapter, I did this on purpose. They were going up against a hive fleet. The victory was supposed to be costly

Cool fluff. I like the bit where the Tyranids eat all those conscipts.
I agree that it works well because it isn't overdone. Reppy for you.
