I recently got my gribbly paws on the Visions of Heresy book. The one with all the paintings from the Sabertooth cards for the Horus Heresy game. And in the back of the book it has all of the cards. Well, after perusing them for my amusement, I came to the realization that the Death Guard had multiple references to Bike and Jetbike squads. Now I know that this isn't strictly canon, but it intrigued me. In the fluff the Death Guard eschew bikes, even Rhinos, so them having Bikes, and JETBIKES is just mindblowing for me... I have always been dead set in the fact that they were the ultimate footsloggers, 20 man squads strolling into enemy fire... but...Jetbikes!?!?!
Think of it as a Footslogger Delivery System.

It used to be that the Death Guard were seen as (fluffwise) a largely mechanized chapter, this seems to have shifted to more of a footslogging focus over time..
Also remember that Pre-Heresy they were just ordinary space marines, not plague-ridden undead. Walking straight into enemy fire would have been as stupid and suicidal for them as for any other legion.
Also, just because a legion didn't make bikes a big focus doesn't mean it didn't have them. Nowadays it's kind of hard to represent because actual plague-marines only come in the footslogging variety, but in the old days where there was a death guard army list they had the option to take bikes.
