So i was given the Ork part of AOBR by a friend of mine and i was going to cut it up and use it for basing and stuff but i decided id make it and it kinda grew on me and now i have 100 boyz 50 nobz 15 deffkoptas and half a looted banblade, but enough of that.
So i thought id go out the box with this one and i decided to go with blue orks to which my friends think is crazy and theres no way any 'greenskin' would be blue.
So heres a bare bones look at why they are blue.
An Imperial Guard General who has just aquired a planet for one reason or another is fed up with his men dying and orders a team of scientists to find away of making what few men he has left more hardy and tough. They try for months using steroids and implants and tech grafts but to no avail. Til a particular young intern jokes about splicing human DNA with Ork stuff due to them being stronger and tougher. The team decide that with everything else failing this was the only way. All atempts to introdure the new DNA into an existing human failed and resulting in madness, so they decided to create them in tubes.
Months past and this new army of ultra strong and ultra strong soliders became mature enough to born from the tubes. Being courtous they birthed 10 at first to run tests. All test were completed to above expectations and the rest of the army was birthed.
All soldiers had showen increased strength and toughness but carried the same strange blue tint which appeared to get darker and more vivid when participating in physical activity. But during the coming months they became more brutish and barbaric, fighting with eachother and becoming far more reckless. Within 6 months of birthing the Ork DNA had completely taken over and the painful process of physical change began. This new 'Ork' army ransacked and destroyed the entire city.
This new army knew that the ork horde would never accept them and decided they had to make it on their own. They find a hanger containing a prototype Baneblade still unfinished, the ork mentality took over and they finished it.
So for those who make it this far that is kind of a reason for my blue orks and the reason they are such a infantry based army gota find away to fit in the deffkopas but im quite tempted to convert them to deffplanes so i dont know yet. Any thoughts welcome as always always helps to bounce ideas off like minded people.

Sorry to everyone who has seen this pop up 4 times no idea what my laptop was/is playing at its not double posting its quad posting stupid wireless internet!
Although I would then be inclined to make them just deathskulls; there's no need for the genetic splicing that went wrong. I'm not sure such splicing would even create blue orks anyway, as the algal substrand of orkoid DNA makes them green due to photosynthesis, which would still happen if they were implanted into humans.
There's all that, and the fact that the only scientists the Imperium has (and yes, they're actually scientists) are the Adeptus Mechanicus, which, for genetics, would be the Magos Biologis, and messing around with the human genome like that would be complete and utter heresy (the kind that gets you killed for *mentioning* it). The Logician cult has been known to do it (well, splice xenos dna with human), but the Inquisition and mainline Mechanicus hunt them down mercilessly and ruthlessly.
"The sergeant major asked me what my job is. I told him it's to do what I am told. He gave me a medal. I like the Imperial Guard."
"Innocentia Probat Nihil"
That is kind of relevant, but isn't exactly unknown in Imperial history, and even vaguely accepted on occasion (see stuff about the Afriel Strain guardsmen), so it's not a definite no. The tech-adepts would take some convincing to do it, though. Because it is still genoheresy to quite a large extent, even if it has been accepted in the past. Although now I think about it it's also not likely that the AdMech would be able to pull of the experiments anywhere other than on a Forge World (which wouldn't be gifted to a general in the manner suggested in the original post).
As mentioned, there's not really any need to make the orks actually blue.. You've hit a jackpot there in that Deathskulls happen to have blue as their klan colour and are also the klan which loves warpaint with typical orky abandon. The more blue paint a deathskull wears on his body, the luckier he's going to be in battle (or so the thinking goes).
Also, Deathskulls love looting, so the baneblade idea still makes perfect sense.
Also, fluffwise it's generally implied that whatever orks use for DNA is fairly tamper proof. As I understand it it's basically tons and tons and tons of junk data containing not only the basic physiological data which most species have but also instinctive knowledge of everything any ork ever could ever possibly need, from how to speak to how to build a functioning handheld shield generator from scrap metal. For this reason, even Genestealers have great trouble converting orks. I think it would take a very, very clever tech priest to do anything with orky genetics and have the results be in any way stable.
Cheers guys for all the comments and from them ive sunddenly realised that ive over thought everything. Orks dont need a reason to be blue they just want to so they do, just like no one knows why their stuff works it just does.
So im going to use today productivly and re-write the fluff and think more child like because after all thats what it boils down to. When your five and you draw a car and its got wings, jet boosters, guns out the bonnet and any manner of crazy contraptions!
