Hey all. I guess I'll jump right in. Probably my favorite of the original Legions is the Alpha Legion. I've always loved the "covert-ops" feel of their background, plus the stuff with Alpharius/Omegon is really cool too. I also think they fit really well with what Space Marines are "supposed" to be. In the Imperium today they are, according to the background, a lightning strike force, hitting the enemy where it's weakest, patching up holes in battle lines until more Guard can be brought in, or cutting off enemy supply lines. They are the stiletto and the Guard are the hammer. But it feels like more and more the fluff of Space Marines is moving towards them acting as a full-scale army, which I don't like at all.
(The following paragraph contains spoilers for the book "Legion")
Anyway, I've just been thinking about the Alpha Legion a lot recently, and I've gotten to wondering what they've been up to since the Horus Heresy. Like, what is their current overall plan? As those of you that have read Legion know, Alpharius/Omegon only turned to Horus in order to save the galaxy from Chaos. Everything they did they did for the good of the galaxy. They even committed their first "treacherous" acts with the words "For the Emperor" on their lips. Then, after the Heresy, when all of the other Traitor Legions fled into the Eye of Terror, they didn't. So, what are they doing now that Horus lost? Lexicanum says that they have been attacking Imperial worlds and use Chaos cultist uprisings to soften targets and distract them before they strike, but I just feel like Alpharius/Omegon's legion would never allow themselves to fall to Chaos and would continue to do whatever they could to fight it. However, I don't see how bringing down the Imperium will do that now, since supplanting the Emperor with Horus was a prerequisite for the Cabal's plan.
They're almost certainly busy running a galaxy-sized guerrilla war campaign, training cultists and infiltrators rather than covert ops or direct action. Their motives are open to debate but, after soaking in the Warp for ten millennia, they aren't fooling anybody but themselves with claims of loyalty.Like, what is their current overall plan?

I find it intensely difficult to believe they are not completely Chaos now. They may delude themselves and believe they are still doing what they do for the good of the Imperium, but so do a very large proportion of heretics, traitors and renegades. I think this paragraph pretty well sums it up:
"Following the battle on Eskrador, the Alpha Legion fractured in order to hide from the Imperium. Small, autonomous warbands were left in imperial space where they set up secret bases in asteroid fields, space hulks and barren worlds. These units launched frequent attacks against military targets that were weakened by the Heresy and still pose a threat to ships, settlements and garrisons. They further spread and coordinate Chaos Cults throughout the galaxy in order to instigate massive revolts against imperial rule. These insurrections are often used to lure imperial forces away from worlds they want to attack, paving the way for large scale assault from the Eye of Terror."
I don't really think that leaves any room for ambiguity. That even seems to suggest they don't even think they are doing the Emperor's work any more but have fully embraced Chaos.
Where did you find that? And if that's true, then it saddens me greatly D=
On the Lexicanum article: Alpha Legion - Lexicanum
I wasn't even aware there was any discussion over whether they were Chaos or not. I mean, they are in the Chaos codex and have Chaos armour.
I know that, but... I dunno. I guess I always just held onto the hope that they were only in the Chaos codex because they were one of the Traitor Legions. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to stick to Pre-Heresy Alpha Legion then. I just wish there was a codex that did them justice.
As for what they've been doing, there's a bit in the Chaos Codex (or maybe the 5th BRB, don't have either handy to check) about them subverting/destroying an Astartes chapter. Plus they're responsible for the Siege of Vraks, as one of their agents twisted the heretic Cardinal and they were the first Astartes on the scene.

An Alpha-Legionnaire destroys the entire Crimson Consuls chapter and gives their supplies of geneseed to Abaddon. I would say thats a pretty big slap to the face of Imperial rule and a big FU to the High Lords of Terra. It would be pretty hard to go "Haha guys, I've just been kidding for the last 10,000 years" after that. (The book is The Long Games at Carcharias (Short Story))
