Hey guys, I'm trying to create my own space marine chapter but before I started I wanted to run some ideas with you guys. I've always liked the IG because they are just regular humans with a lot of courage, they're easily killed but they still don't give up. I especially like the cadians because they have to deal with chaos which i can imagine is extremely scary. Gaming wise, I prefer space marines because they require less models to build up a force and they're not as cumbersome. So, I wanted to create a Space marine chapter that is close to the cadians in terms of colors, equipment, and humbleness. My chapter wouldn't include psykers and wouldn't dress up with robes, capes, scrolls, etc.. They would stay balanced between close combat and ranged warfare. I guess my main question is that would such a relationship exsist in the 40k universe? I'm trying to reflect my respect for the IG through this chapter. What do you guys think?
In the fluff the Space Marines hate the guard, they see humans as worthless lumps of ____ (you get the gist). So not really, they don't go with camo, they go with whatever colour suits them. Usually bright reds, blues, greens etc. I know you see guard as cumbersome, but they don't have to be, all you need for a good guard army is a couple of vet squads and a good few tanks. It's a cheaper way to do guard, and you do it right you get a lot of shooting in, guard are capable of tabling a lot of armies at range. The only trouble you would have is with deep strike and outflanking armies. But guard doesn't have to be huge to win, or unwieldy. Our tanks are our strength. Don't try to use SM as a substitute, you will come off worse in most battles, it's been discussed in other forums the merits of different armies, and all I will say is the winners are masters of a single discipline, which normal 'vanilla' marines are not. They are jacks of all trades which don't play well anymore. Not in my experience anyhow.
Rather the opposite, actually. Space Marines being so focused upon the art of war, they relate to Guardsmen better than any other humans. They also have complementary roles--Marines are too valuable for garrison and frontline duties so a typical strategy is for the Marines to break the enemy and then have the Guard reinforce them.Originally Posted by jbowerukOn the one hand, Marines are not allowed to share a command structure with any non-Marine military force. On the other hand, there are no fewer than twenty Marine Chapters permanently stationed around the Eye of Terror. Just say your Marines are one of those twenty and that they frequently liaise with the Cadians. That will explain your Marines' Cadian-ness while allowing room for their own backstories.Originally Posted by Greyhem
Do remember that the Cadians themselves can be pious before you throw out all the religious trappings...living on the threshold of Hell and all that. Also, one of the Marines' top duties is to be living symbols of the Emperor. Those robes and purity seals shouldn't be considered tripping hazards for otherwise professional soldiers; did medieval knights carry those fancy banners just so the archers could single him out more easily? (Even if that was, at times, the practical result.) No, the knight carried that banner in order to be a representative of all that was good and holy to the rank and file. 40k Space Marines occupy a similar role from the Guard's point of view. To inspire you, instead of having a modern-era "joint task force" give your Marines the slogan "Cadia Shall Not Fall!" and make some fluff stories about them winning the day and vanishing into the sunset as a Cadian regiment secures the battlefield. Or something like that, anyway. Too much familiarity can breed contempt.

Totally agree with you Intrepid
Hold the line here ... we are the last line for our future...
Indeed interpid hit the jackpot. And remember that there are chapters that not only entrust but trully sacriface themselves for the rank and file humanity(which all marines should do,but anyway)and especialy guardsmen. Two examples are the space wolves who even gone so far as to open hostilities with the inquisition for the guardsmen of armageddon and the BA who view the human leftovers in their soul as the redeeming parts against the black rage.
So i would go the way interpid pointed out.Perhaps during the thirteen black crusade a large strike force of your chapter(perhaps an entire company) was isolated and was on the brink of been overwhelmed by the forces of chaos. As the marines were fighting to their bitter end a regiment of kadian shock troops and LRBTs arrived and linked to the besieged marines carrying the day. From that day forward the chapters captain sworn an oath to be battle brothers with the cadians.
Little did he know that his fate would later lead him to become the chapter master and now as honour demands he has commited his chapter in the war zones of cadia.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
The name of the twenty-Chapters (as a group) is the Adeptus Praeses. There are 18 Chapters (one, the Black Consuls, was destroyed by the Word Bearers, the other, the Relictors, went rogue and disappeared into the Eye to fight Chaos with Chaos). Some of the others include the Iron Talons, Excroriators, Marines Exemplar, Kngihts Unyielding, Night Watch, Subjugators, White Consuls, Crimson Scythes and Brothers Penitent, and there is a permanent Grey Knights presence, so your Chapter could be descended from any Legion and have any backstory. All of those Chapters would have close ties to Cadia, and would have devoted huge numbers to any threat to the Cadian Gate. Go nuts and have fun!
pilot00, I like the introduction of oath and duty. That's brilliant.
Thanks for all your replies. I said it before and i'm going to say it again, this is the most helpful forum i've been to. On a different note, I've thinking of a chapter name that isn't too cheesey. The Marines of Cadia? I know not very original. Marines of Guard?
The Codependent Guard? xD
Guardians of Cadia?
