so i read/heard somewhere that they all got killed off by some hive fleet, directed towards them by the inquisition. can anybody shed some light on this for me? any insights? anything you might know, and lets bring em back! they where awesome.
Squats weren't really dwarves, they were humans from high gravity worlds who got short and muscular. Unfortunately, the high gravity also affected the blood flow to their brains, making them think that dressing like biker gangers and riding around on trikes in a grim futuristic setting was cool and/or made any sense.
They were deliberately scrapped by GW because noone wanted to write a new codex for them. The explanation about being eaten by hive fleets was slapped over the event to give it some justification, but the whole thing hasn't been heard from for over a decade so I think it's fair to say it's old fluff. You can still find the old models floating around; a few aren't bad, most are dire.
The most we've heard about space dwarves recently have been the Demiurg, who thus far have made no appearance in 40k but have models for BFG. Unlike the squats they are a separate species from humans and look a bit more 'alien' (from the single piece of concept art we have of one) but are roughly dwarf shaped, live in clans, hate orks and like mining (albeit astro-mining, their entire society is based around huge mining ships, they have no planets and don't seem to want them). They're also very high tech, especially in energy physics and artificial intelligence, and have a loose working relationship with the Tau (if I'm remembering right, the Tau acquired knowledge of ion weapons tech from the demiurg). They don't seem to have any great interest in the 'politics' of the 40k galaxy beyond gathering resources in space, which I presume is why they've not made an appearance in the 40k game yet.
So yeah, that's the history of the space dwarves idea so far.
If you have played the old strategy(almost)game Homeworld and you happen to remember the Bentuzy(sy or whatever),you have a copy paste idea of what the demiourg are.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
I personally like the space dwarfs. i hope they bring em back one day or at least let us play em as an army. it would be nice to see the chaos space dwarfs up against a band or orks. or eldar against...non chaos space dwarfs. the one or two lone trains they have in the galaxy against the eldar war machines on a far off forgotten planet.
