Do Necrons and Tyranids have the capacity for individual thought? Or are they merely robots obeying obscure orders('Crons) and chittering beasts acting on instinct('nids)? Do some units (Necron Lords and Tyranid Tyrants, for example) think and act under their own violition, while others (Warriors and Guants) merely follow some unimaginably remote orders?
Anyone know anything?
Regarding Tyranids, it's more accurate to consider the physical beasts as the cells forming the "body" of the Great Devourer controlled by the Hive Mind... This is a more accurate portrayal of the Tyranid "race".
However, Imperium has studied the Tyranids a lot, and have come to the conclusion that the larger creatures (Warriors, Tyrants, etc) have a capacity for "independent" thought (can act in a manner suggesting intelligence), while smaller ones act purely instinctively (Gaunts) or are completely mindless (Rippers) when removed from the range of the Hive Mind.
Details are unknown, but this probablly entailed shipping Tyranid specimens to the western fringe of the galaxy. =)
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
Indeed, the Lords gave themselves up, and so obviously have more complicated mental abilities, only if it's limited to tactical scenarios, or planning etc.
While they were living creatures, I somehow doubt though the average rank and file Necron warrior has retained individuality, will, free thinking etc. I imagine they probably are merely unfeeling servants, doing exactly what they are told to at all times without question.
necrons to a degree....but it is only 'kill everything' i believe
nids (the little buggers) probably think akin to a small predatory animal when removed from the hive mind...so if you count that as thought then they do think...otherwise no
Never judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes...by that time they'll be a mile away, and have no shoes
Necrons probably think kill them all do as master says. 'Nids think basic instincts

/rant :realmad: Tyranids as a whole think, well to be more precise, tyranids are a It, therefore, does it think? Yes. It does. How else can one have as good or better tactics than the Space Marines? So you say one does not have to be intelligent to have good tactics and stratagy? To have better at times than SM T&S means that then SMs and other humans therefore are not intelligent.
Necrons can think, but to a limited degree. The fluf says that their minds were dulled when their souls were encased in the robot forms created by the C'Tan. They can think a little for themselves, but have to follow the orders of the C'Tan. This means that they can retreat, follow specific orders, etc. Tyranids, however, are one mind in many bodies. The Tyrants, Carnifex's, Red Terror, Zoanthrope are large vessels of this thought. But smaller 'nids need ot use those vessels as transmitters to recieve the commands.
So 'Crons, a little. 'Nids, not really.

I think that for 'nids, tyrants & warriors n' MAYBE zoanthropes hav enough intelligence 2 think 4 themselves. Tyrants r th most likely, so if u wanna do 'nid fluff, den it wud all hav 2 b based on da tyrant (i.e.: hive tyrant bob h8s blood angels).
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'> They will shoot you and cut you up and step on the pieces and burn them and assemble the ashes and shoot them again and grind them into sand and scatter the sand into the sea and boil the sea away and gather the hardened remains and melt them into a rock and shoot the rock and burn what's left and launch the remains into the sun and...

I'm not sure about the 'crons having any type of individual intelligence. I think they think more like the Terminator, ya know, like Schwar... Swarch.. Sh.. Big Arnie, (You know who I mean). If they had independent thought then there is no way they would be such a cohesive force. I think they all just follow algorithims/ processes and not thought.
