In my endless persute of fluff in the 40k universe i have come to think that the worship of a primarch is and should be viewed as heresy. Think about it, all the trator legions fallowed the will of there primarch no matter how dark, look at the dark angels and the space wolfs. The inquesition cant get anything out of the dark angels and as for the space wolfs well they are constantly under the magnafying glass of the inquesition. Space marines who worship their primarchs end up becoming way to zelous and end up doing things in the name of their primarchs will even if it goes agents everything the empror stands for. So anyway i just wanted to know what you guys think about this.
I am no heritic, I am the savior of mankind, the voice of the emperor, cursed, hated, and hunted by my former brothers the dark angels, I now go to terra to save all mandkind, I am but a shadow, I am Cypher the fallen.
The loyal chapters don't usualy worhsip thier Primarchs exclusively, rather they see them as equals to the Emporer. It's sorta like some branches of christianity that view Jesus as a seperate entity from god that is almost equal to him.The Inquisition moniters most of the lopyal chapters heavily for various riegons, but I suspect politics keeps them from getting close enough to find any condeming evidence. They watch the Blood Angels too because of thier genetic flaws and the the fact they worship Sanguinuis as almost equal to the Emporer.
most space marines chapters dont worship the emperor as a god, but instead as the creator of the primarchs and themselves (as humans that where "elevated bye his blessings"), this pretty much pisses the inquisition off, but they cant really risk making loyal space marine chapters go haywire beacause they dont worship "Bob" as they should, so they kinda tolerate that behavior

Yeh the Blood angels primarch died for the emporer. Sanguinuis had the gift of foresight and saw his death at the hands of horus yet he still fought willingly under the emporers command he was one of the two that went with the emporer. Sanguinuis to me is better than the emporer, sanguinuis followed the emporer and as a result his men follow him as well as the emporer equal. Blood angel should not be suspected of heresy.
You are armoured by the emporer himself. Righteousness is your shield, faith your armour and hated your weapon SONS OF SANGUINIUS ARISE

Ahh... I love a good fluffy discussion for us fluff-nuts...
What you must remember, is that none of the loyalist Chapters deny that the Emperor is the protector of mankind, they simply see him as being 'father' to all Space Marines. In a sense, you might say that the belief structures of the loyalist Chapters are Imperial 'cults'.
Much like Catholics today who see God as being highest but wo worship Christ and the Virgin Mary, one could say that the Space Marines feel the same way about the Emperor and their respective Primarchs.
So is this heresy? In my opinion, it depends very much on the eye of the beholder. I don't believe that an Inquisitor would ever openly say that the Space Wolves are completely non-heretic. Nor would they ever accuse the Ultramarines of blatent heresy due to their love of humanity and their view of themselves as the 'protectors' of all mankind.
I think the word 'heresy' can be bent and stretched. The Inquisition like to deal out judgement left and right but they are not completely blind to nessesity. They know when it is foolish to accuse someone.
I would say that some of the Chapters do lie on the brink of Heresy. Among the Chapters I would mention would be the Space Wolves, Dark Angels and Blood Angels. The first two don't need much explanation but I think the Blood Angels are becoming very radical in the way they set their own honour and survival above that of humanity. Yes, their Primarch died side by side with the Emperor but so would any one of the other loyalist Primarchs had they had the chance.
My two cents...
The Catholic analogy is very apt.
It's in Catholic Mythology that GW draws most of their inspiration from in regards to the Imperium.
The Primarchs are sort of a mix between Jesus Christ, Catholic Saints and Angels.
The Primarchs were Divine yet created Human like JC
They each represent a different facet of the Divine like Catholic Saints.
like Angels, they were created the supreme servants of the Divine, yet through their vanity they can turn against their Master and be cast out. (guess who? )
As to whether it's Heresy to worship one's Primarch over the Holy Emporer.
Well, I play Witch Hunter so you already know my answer
It is heresy to worship anyone/anything above the Emperor. There is a marine prayer from the original rogue trader book that goes something like this:
"The Emperor protects our minds as our armour protects our bodies and none are higher in our devotion"
This was however pre heresy as the heretics changed the prayer to Horus, which really miffed the space marines.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
As long as you worship the emperor then i don't see why this would count as heresay i mean the normal folk of the imperium can worship saints and what are the primarchs if not more saintly than saints well some of them.
i agree with boba's analogy concerning catholisism, however the blood angels comment seems flawed (no pun intended), they are not concerned with their own survival over the survival and prtection of humanity...take armageddon for example...they landed right in the middle of the orks, and slaughtered them all...they didnt have much chance of survival, but they did it to save armageddon...same with tychos last battle on armageddon
they are concerned with their own survival but my no means are they more concerned about it than they are about the survival of humanity...they have done more than most chapters to save humanity at the expense of their lives
Never judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes...by that time they'll be a mile away, and have no shoes
as sw fluff nut i should say something. the s.w do not worsip ANYONE. they veiw people like russ and the emporer as great men, and examples to set yourselfagainst. they are called on o witness great feats of heroism, not for blessings or protection. what good is a prayer book if yor dead?
Children in the dark cause accidents, accidents in the dark cause childen.
