e.g ultramarines facing off against a salamander chapter. would you call it a training excersise or something else

another e.g is imperial guard vs ultramarines. now you could say that the imperial guard are traitors but what if this goes against the fluff u or your friend has created for their army how do you get around if you actually bother with a reason for a batlle report actually hapenning

and hears an even harder one necrons and ultramarines vs ig DA and eldar

    it's just a game man.

No, it doesn't make sense. I guess you could say that whoever you are attacking has been accused of chaos, even tho it may be false (I'm sure it happense, eh?). As for 3+ opponent battles, they never make sense.

Once you get to larger battles with multiple players and armies, it gets alot harder to explain the reasons. Just pick 2 armies facing of against each other, then some other armies join. But it is only a game, and it doesn't need to be logical.

It doesn't really need to be explained in terms of fluff, unless it's part of a campaign. Otherwise people wouldn't fight each other as much coz of all the possible mismatches.

Training excercise works. You can always try something like this.

The enemy are stockpiling weapons of mass destruction of course. Is there any need to explore the reasons any further?

Yeah, this was a bit too easy but I did have to chuckle to myself ^_^
O.K. and now a serious response:
At the end of the day, history has proven that we dont really need a reason to go to war... just an excuse.
If someone else has something that you want, or even other factions want, then why not go and take it by force? It may even be beneficial to combine forces with an unlikely ally. It doesn't really matter as long as you get what you want in the end. And any way, todays allies are tomorrows enemy.
    It's worth a krak!
