What are the Skitarri? something ive never heard of, could someone enlighten me?
They're in the BGB, they re the armed forces of the adeptus mechanicus, just as well armed as marines and have several minor bionic augmentations. They also make up titan crews on occasion.
oh ok cool. Must be them in all the pics of Mechanicus in the Horus Heresy books. anywhere i can go for in-depth info?
Skitarii are the military units of the Adeptus Mechanicus. They travel with expeditionary fleets, provide infantry support for the Titan legions, and crew support weapons.
I'm not sure they're quite as well equipped as marines. It compares them to Imperial Guard stormtroopers in the book. But yes, they have basic cybernetic enhancements, and the picture is very cool.
Some of the figures in the Adeptus Mechancius art are probably Skirtarii, but others may well be Tech Priest. A good indicator is whether or not they have Mechadendrites (the long cable things extending from their bodies), Tech priests use them to repair things and help them out in their everyday chores, and, since Skitarii don't have to repair things, they don't need them.
Hope that helps.
sorry but what's BGB, having massive brain fart today.
i thought the skitari were like servitors, biogenetic machines made from humans.
I shall destroy all who stand in my way. The Emperor shall be reborn in me, the Primarchs shall be remade in me. I shall cast down the Dark Gods, the Star Gods shall be consumed just as they consumed their brothers. Those who fell shall be redeemed, those who remained pure shall be rewarded. The Imperium shall regain its power and the Dark Age of Technology will seem like nothing. For I am the Numen and I am coming
I got the impression that the Skitarii were more independently minded than servitors. A lot more, in fact. Not sure about them being the main body of the Mechanicus' armies, servitors are more numerous and more expendable. That and I don't want the idea of electro-priests to die out.
The Skitarii are usually used as the defensive forces of an AM Forge World, and it seems that they get a pretty impressive amount of technology because of that. They're also used as support for Titan Legions and such.
It seems like Servitors accompany Explorator units and are used as additional labor for Tech Priests. One interesting picture of Servitors and various AM units is in the Tau codex, it's in the origin of the race area. It shows a Servitor armed with an Assault Cannon and a Power Claw being charged at by a near naked Tau with a knife. But behind him is what appears to be a body in a tank on tracks. It could possibly a seriously cyberised tech-priest. Although I must admit the Tech-Priest in the foreground is pretty imposing, what with multiple servo-arms and apparently only a quarter of his face and an arm still organic.
I'm quoting from the book.Originally posted by Xerxes@Mar 6 2005, 22:57

Yes, they are.
As for being mindless, I don't think they're as lobotomised as servitors, as that would impair their combat effectiveness. However, they are likely raised within forge world society, and hence they might well have an unflinching religious faith which motivates and guides all their actions.
That, and it seems plausable the tech the Tech Priests might put something in their implants to keep them calm and stable, maybe some brain suppressing devices, or chem inhalers.
