Okay, I know the mechanical effects, and I know how they are represented on models (those little wax stamps) but what exactly is a purity seal, and how does one earn them?

I believe from what I've read that they're badges of faith. I think I also read somewhere that a purity seal often incorporates having a special treatment put on your armour, but I may be wrong. Are they just medals for faith, basically?

everytime a spacemarine comes into contact with a tainted enemy he must then pass through phycic de-contamination if the the Librarians of the Chapter deem him un-corrupted he is given a purity seal

this is why Grey Knights are covered in the things

Cool. That pretty much explains it.

Presumably, when they're given to inquisitorial stormtroopers, SoB or IG priests they mean something similar, though obviously with something else replacing the librarians?
