What is the date of the present day in 40k? The one that most games are based in and is referd to as the present in the codex's.
War necessitates a different set of morals.
Mine will do.
Difficult. I'd say the current date is about 000.M42 at least, seeing as the 13th Crusade happened in 999.M41, and I doubt it wold all be over in a year. But it is now officially over. Beyond that I have no idea.
To know the current date you have to wait for the next campaign, because the 'current date' is somewhere between the 13th crusade and the chronologically next campaign.
Yeah, but the last reference we have is the 13th Crusade, dating at 999.M41 like I said. Other events might be referred to as "present" in various sources because it's an event that happened at the time of writing (no matter what the actual date). So it does depend where you read as to what you think it could be.
If Black Library novels are to be trusted on the subject of a fluff timeline, the current date is sometime after 005.M42. I haven’t been able to find a precise date, but in the novel ‘For the Emperor’ by Sandy Mitchell there are references made to a book first published this year.
However, I doubt we’ll see any official Games Workshop campaigns taking place in the 42nd millennium; the game is called Warhammer 40,000, after all, and I doubt they’d change the name merely to conform to a fluff timeline. But who knows? *Shrugs.*

Especially seeing as "Warhammer 41,000" sounds a lot less cool. But then what'll they do for campaigns? They seem to be very big on participation campaigns at the moment, so in order to continue that they'll have to do something. But what?
apparently at least for the fore seeable future 40k campaigns will take place in "historical" periods, Badab War, Hive Fleet Kraken, Age of Apostasy etc
But that will monumentallly suck; those conflicts have all been resolved, so there would be no element of uncertainty in them whatsoever. It'd take away what made campaigns interesting.
True, but then they could just make up new 'historical' campaigns. The 40k galaxy is a massive place, and in 10,000 years, I'd imagine there are things which 40k hasn't covered (read: made up) yet.Originally Posted by Xerxes
