Im sorta new to war hammer in the fact that i have never owned an army. I guess im afraid to commit. whatever the case is I have played about 5 games mostly against imperial guard and space marines. I want a 2000 point army to start playing. since that is such a big commitment I want to make sure I pick the right army. first I have played as necrons only so far and i think they have good potential against IG but not space marines. second i want an army that will be easy to play but has some room to customize. and third i want to win some games with this army so it would be helpful to have an army that can win against IG and space marines. thanks for any suggestions.
Hey Daroc, I know how you feel. They're all so cool it is hard to pick one to start with.
All armies have their strengths and weaknesses, it comes down to tactics and army selection. So think about what you like about the various armines and how you like play. Do you prefer shooting them from afar or getting down and dirty in close combat? What about hordes of weaker troops that overwhelm the enemy with sheer weight of numbers or do you like smaller but more powerful units that take a licking and still keep ticking?
And let's not forget the fluff factor (since this is in the Army Fluff forum), do you want to join the Necrons trying to eradicate all life or perhaps you'd rather be like the Tau and create your own little empire.
I think you ought to explore the LO forums and the various 40K websites out there on the web, find something you really like and then figure out how to make it work for you. Once you know what you like, I am sure the more strategically minded fellows here at LO will be able to help you figure out how to fight the IG and SM effectively.
Gamesworkshop website is also a pretty good start.
I think you may want to have a look at orks, they are an awsome army with loads of personality and VERY custumizable, in lists and the actual models.Originally Posted by daroc
But alas, joining in now can be a bit of a problem, as GW is redoing all the armies for 4th edition, chances are any army you'll get (other then SM and Nids) will have all kinds of new models. not to say that should stop but, but just as a warning. I sujest you keep using the armies you've been using and try proxieing different setups to find what you like most. OR make Combat Patrol armies, small, yet still armies.
In the end all we can do is give sujestions, you have to make the final call.
2000pts is alot of money to start with right off the bat. Maybe you should decide on an army then get around 1000 to get a feel for them. I suggest taking the 40k tour on the GW site. They go through each army and their strengths weakness if im not mistaken. That should help.
This isn't really the right board, but you're forgiven.
My advice.. prioritise first of all. What is most important to you? Having an army you like the models of? Having an army which plays in a certain style? Having an army with a cool theme or background to it?
Once you've decided that, look through the GW site and maybe pop down to your store and flick through the codexes (most staff dont seem to mind you browsing their codexes, in my experience.) Then, if you like the sound of an army, buy its codex (a codex might be expensive.. but it's still fairly cheap compared to a 2000 point army) and build a list. Then, when you're happy with that, go and buy some models.
Planning is important.. A 2000 point army is a major commitment, and you need to like what you're painting/playing with or it won't seem worth it when you get to the end.
Sometimes I go into the store just to look at a codex.Originally Posted by The_Giant_Mantis

Right now I would say the most custimisable army would be either I.G. or Space Marines because of the doctrines and triat systems.
Here are short advanteges of each army.
S.M.- vey versitile and keep on going army
I.G.- shooting and overwhelming numbers
Tyranids- c.c. with some shooting and overwhelming numbers
Necrons-shooting and keep on going army
Eldar- depends on which units you take
Daemonhunters-expensive but very powerful units
Tau-more shooty than guard
Chaos-depends on what units you take
Orks-c.c. and overhelming numbers
Witch Hunters-(i haven't looked at the codex so i dont know)
Hope this helps.
I think eldar can get alittle more credit than that :pOriginally Posted by grand master

Personally I like necrons because they can repair themselves. If you get necrons, watch out for the "phase out" rule.
