I've always wanted to make a rag-tag army of humans in cloaks & other baggy rugged clothes, some with gas-masks, others with scarfs over their faces. What would essentially be thought of as some sort of rebels, though not tainted directly by Chaos & therefore not cultists. I haven't got it all figured out yet, but I plan on them being resistance fighters on their homeworld which is on the fringes of the Empire, and being indoctrinated into Imperial life and culture. This planet will have to be picked out off a map, but if its an Imperial planet then this Imperialization would've been a recent event in history, perhaps a few years ago.
I already know which models to use, and I think such a force could look simply awesome with the proper paint scheme. I plan on taking models from the Steel Legion range, the Catachan range, Cadian sniper models, the Tanith ghost models, old Tallarn Desert Raider models, and perhaps even some Necromunda miniatures, Ratskins maybe. I want to use the rules of an Imperial Guard branch such as the Catachans to make it 100% legal on the tabletop, but my forces will be notably 'weak' due to a lack of heavy armor and tanks and such. Still, a few ruffed up IG Sentinels would be there, and maybe one or two Chimeras.. nothing else, no tanks with any sort of considerable gun on it. There will have to be heavy weapons distributed amongst the troops.. I think missle launchers would be particularly fitting.
Anyways, I'd like some feedback on the feasibility of this idea, if I'd be hopeless to win any games with it, and even which planets would make good candidates. Also, if you know of a website or book that contains information on such planets & their inhabitants on the 'frontier' of the Imperium if you will please point me in the right direction. If you have any ideas for models to use or a particular rules set that would suit them best please let me know, I stopped playing 40k some years ago & have only been playing Fantasy occasionally.
I love this concept. I will point out you are likely to catch a lot of flack for the theme you have chosen but that kind of thing isn't allowed on LO so it will disappear as soon as it crops up.
Catachans is the codex you want for this, Ambushes, satchel bombs, land mines and more. That is the codex to go with, though I would say its not the miniatures range you want. mix talarans and death corps.
I had a feeling the Catachan Codex was the best one for what I want to do. The paint scheme will be very earthy with alot of green, olive green especially.. and a bit of red here and there to signify their allegance. Red will be their color then, but they will still be painted predominantly green.
As far as miniatures goes.. the tallarn desert raiders are right on. personally, i really really like the tanith ghosts models.. they look exactly like how i'd envision my troops to look, sort of rag-tag with cloaks for camoflauge and not much more than heavy clothing for armor. The sniper models from various IG groups are nice too. I think a good mixture of these with some minor conversions & a solid paint scheme will make them all look unified.
The problem will lie in the army itself, it will be fairly weak.. basicly a horde of guerrilla fighters with crappy weaponry, a few rusted sentinels, an elite commando squad that rides in a Chimera, and a Hellhound I believe its called since it doesnt carry heavy munitions & suits their needs. What I'm trying to say is, can you picture a regular Imperial Guard army that had nothing but soldiers except for 2 sentinels, a chimera & a hellhound? lol.. no leman russ, no basilisk.. none of that. It's like taking away a major advantage of the army. But I know this going in.. and I love a good challenge. Besides, victories will be that much sweeter.
Sounds good to me. So their guerilla rebels? You can make them dedicated to chaos and not be mindless cultists. Why not make them similar to the Blood Pact, or Sons of Sek in the guant's ghosts novels. They are utterly dedicated to chaos but are a crack military unit that can match, if not beat, the disipline in any imperial guard unit. They are highly trained, utterly dedicated, military fighting unit. If I were to ever start a traitor IG unit it would be similar to those.
Belay that! Stick to your guns and go with a army of freedom fighters. It has more character and is open to more fighting options to boot. While I can see that it may annoy some Ignore them and do what you wanted to.
Sounds awesome. I'd stick with the dreedom fighters.
Just so you know, the Codex: Catachans is a free download now...you can find it at the UK GW site.
For minis I'd go with catachans becasue the Tallarn are kind of hard to come by, and the catachans will suit you none the less. You could give them some face masks with green stuff.
A not about using the catachan codex: If you want to use Chimeras then you can't use the rules from the book. Normal Death Worlders don't take them.
However, if you want to use the jungle fighters Doctrine then you can go for it. What other doctrines would you be using?
Oh ya, Welcome to LO!
I've always wanted to do something similar. The first question is: Do they have to be in jungle/woods? You could make a cool city-fighting force, the cityfight codex I belive has some nice rules, which includes traps and snipers. Doctorines could be light infantry, camocloaks etc. Like the idea of few vehicles this could make this army even more deadly. Think 100-150 men 3+ cover saves and a heckload of heavyweapons. (If you want to keep it fluffy, grenade lauchers as special weapons (or perhaps flamers) and then autocannon/missilelauncher as heavy. These weapons aren't very high-tec or hard to come by so they should fit in nicely.
Special weapon squads with demolition charges (are they called that?) anyway you know those s 8 ap 2 ordnace things which you throw. Take 2 teams of these and deepstrike (you could say that they dug a tunnel and ambushed the enemy.)
As for models I think mainly tallarn would look cool. Not good to mix too much as this would make the force look un uniformed and so on. Maybe they could have an elite "scout" unit like in the ghosts novells. Tanith minatures would be appropriate for these and use them as veterans, I think it would be fluffy if you gave these guys plasma guns, since they're elite and all.
Keep more ideas coming, this could turn into something very nice both fluffy and nice to play with.
I don't think they'd align with Chaos.. I don't want to make them evil you see. You know how the Tau are for the better good and all that? Good guys, yet not THE good guys? A chaotic/good force if you will. Just some local tribes that refuse to convert for some fundamental reason. Perhaps a religon, perhaps a tradition, something that just makes them feel ultimately incompatable with Imperial life and will die fighting them to protect themselves, yet aren't for the downfall of the Imperium.. just the Imperium's presense on their planet you see.
You have a point on army unification with the use of such different models, here was going to be my rationale going about it. At least half of the models in any squad if not more would have some sort of cloak, whether they be Tanith Ghost models, Sniper models from the Cadians & Catachans lines, whatever. But not all of them.. the other half could be models with enough clothing to make it look sort of baggy or at the least completely covers their flesh, this clothing would be painted in the exact same scheme as the ones with cloaks. Picture a Tanith Ghost model with a dark green cloak & earth toned clothing, perhaps some grey as well, with a little red bandana or armband or something like that. Now picture them standing beside Archive Desert Raiders with the same color green 'coats' & the same earth toned colors for their pants and accesories. Of course their scarfs on their face would be painted the dark red color. I think Steel Legion models w/gas masks and overcoats that go to their thighs/knees rock.. theyre all pewter but who cares, I have a fantasy army that is almost entirely pewter. I'll have to experiment with it.. perhaps seperate squads with cloaks and squads without, or sticking models together in squads that most closely resemble each other but not necessarily the entire army in design, not color scheme.
So Catachans can't use Chimera's for transport eh? That's ok.. come to think of it, I can't picture this army getting ahold of them & maintaining them, then transporting their troops in them without any of the logistical support that a regular IG company would have. As long as they can use Sentinels and Hellhounds then I am happy, as these two items fit the army perfectly..even if the Sentinels are a bit out of place, I don't care! They are simply awesome models .. cooler than Crisis Battlesuits in appearance if you ask me.
Doctrines? Ah.. here in lies the dilemma. I havent played 40k in about 6 or 7 years, and when I used to play, I first played Blood Angels & then Switched to Chaos Marines. Up until a year ago, I was out of the hobby entirely but have since bought a nice dark elf army for fantasy battles, just need to paint it. So I'm not too keen on the exact rules of the current edition of 40k at the moment.. I know you can pick a certain number of Doctrines, and these allow your army to gain access to special abilities and equipment, right? And certain branches of IG can only choose from certain Doctrines? Well unfortunately, I don't know what any of them give for bonuses just yet.. I'll have to pick up a codex. Should I buy the standard IG Codex? I want to finally build this force because I think I have the modeling and painting skills to finally pull it off and since gamers are few and far between around here.. about 3 times as many people play 40k than Fantasy(I live in a heavy military area).
Can someone explain some basic doctrines they think might go well with this? I realize I still need to write my fluff on this company of renegade guerrillas. They need a name, their purpose is apparent, but their history has yet to be written. I think I am going to say that this group of fighters is in close contact with the Tau, perhaps not too far away from this home planet. I know theres an upcoming campaign between Tau and Ordo Xenos, so perhaps in those games, I could ally my forces with the Tau against the Marines and Guard. This is where it gets fun and you start to think 'Gee, if they are friends, you'd think the Tau would give them some pulse-gun technology, you know.. hook em up with some nice guns. But that kinda schtuff is illegal. This is getting even further out there, but it would be so killer if I could field a squad of Kroot Mercenaries with my guys, like a gift from the Tau in a discreet drop-pod to help us defend the part of the plant the Imperium is moving into?
But what about the actual fluff, here? Why have they thrown off Imperial rule? What do they have instead? What is/was their world like before/after Imperial involvement? These questions need answers.
