By far the The stupidest piece of fluff ever is the fact that each space marine chapter numbers only one thousand men. This makes no sence none at all I dont care how good a marine is, even 1000 of the "movie marines" (one tactical squad ~ 1500 points) would be NOTHING compared to how strong a chapter is represented in the fluff. During the EOT campain the Iron Hands were supposed to have beaten an army of over 10,000 TANKS. Further more a battle barge is supost to be the equivalant of an imperial battleship it would take about 1000 people to run! Nobody seems to understand the scale of the galaxy it is 100,000 light years (946,000,000,000,000,000km - 588,000,000,000,000,000miles) side to side. The disk (where earth/tera is) is 3,000lght years (28,300,000,000,000,000km - 17,600,000,000,000,000miles) thick. It contains 100,000,000,000 stars. An army of 1,000 marines would be as insignificant as an ant in east africa an invisible dot on an invisible dot. So in conclusion STUPIDEST FLUFF EVER! if any one wants to contradict me do so.
I agree but you'll find many with better fluff reasoning capacity than you have something called mod power. You also forget that, they were probably aided by a few regiments of Imperial tanks. The imperials often get left out when SM are involved. Plus there are supposed to be 1000 chapters. Meaning just the first invisible spot of a 1,000,000 marines.

159th Corsair Rifles (35% done))
69th Armored Wall Busters (95% done)
Total 197 men, 12 tanks, 4 Heavy Artillery Pieces
But aren't there like fifty BILLION different chapters of space marines?
I mean it, in all honesty. I play a sane army (orks) so I don't know what to expect, but, still...
Also, remember that that battle barge is not just run by space marines. They have servitors and the like to run things for them.
A chapter has 1000 space marines. That's the guys in the armour stomping about for the emperor.
It also has countless other scribes and the like. They're the ones who keep things rolling.
And, lookit this way, at least you're not stuck wishing you could play Movie orks. THOSE are some frightening things right there.
"Some days you're the Mekboy building the kannon, the rest you're the grot being blown up by it."
- Quote attributed to Sorkrates, before his much mourned death due to ingestion of Hemsquig Juice.
"Dis iz my choppa, and herez me gun. Dat's for killin' and so'z dis one!"
- Bloodaxe Kommando Warchant
Fifty billion different marine chapters? No, there are only 1,000 chapters of marines, each supposed to have 1,000 marines in them, for a grand total of 1,000,000 marines as closet_anarchist stated.
But on the point of fluff, when has fluff ever made it over into the rules? In game, marine commanders can be bested by a lucky chaos unit champion, but in fluff they led a single squad against an army and held out for days. A railgun ignites the air around it because it moves so fast, yet only kills one marine- even if they line up along the shot. Nothing makes perfect sense, but until you find another game that's better, learn to deal with it.
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, even if it's wrong.
I can kind of see where you're coming from, that makes it seem as though there are barely any marines at all...but they had to make marine LEGIONS down to the much smaller chapters because of the heresy, with the smaller chapters it would be difficult for it to happen again.

I'll take a stab. Marines are only limited based on the fact that fully half of them turned to chaos and nearly destroyed the Imperium. Fluffwise, 1000 marines for 1000 thousand chapters is actually pushing it from the imperium's point of view because they have to monitor them all very closely so as to prevent what happened 10 millenia ago from ever happening again.
How good a marine is IS the whole point. A superhuman that basically defies all understanding isn't something imperial citizens take lightly. More and more they are beginning to be defined as a different race entirely in the imperium.
It's also the effect. Superstition reigns all. You can't dismiss the fact that roughly 97% of imperial citizens have never seen a marine. They are fairy tales, suped up humans that can crush anything, they drop out of the sky with fury and annihilate everything. And when people do see marines, the tales pale in comparison to what they actually do.
I get what you're saying that in comparison to the millions of worlds and trillions upon trillions of people, you should have more marines per chapter. 1000 marines per chapter are the rules, laid down in the Codex Astartes, any one chapter discovered straying from this may be wiped out on grounds of heresy. Numbers is for the Imperial Guard and Navy. The very small number of marines works out very well for the Imperium in many ways.

about 1000 chapter each roughly a 1000 marines when at full strength however each chapter would have many thousands of support staff, fleet crew, liege men behind them. The Space Wolfs and Iron Hands as non-Codex chapters are notable exceptions with usually more marines
Ach, screw the friggin pansies!! Give me an Mini-mi and some grenades and ill rid the universe of those armoured pond weed!! Space marines are feared, only (i rekon) because no one else has good guns. Feel free to form a mob with pitchforks and flaming torches, thats would be completly acceptable. In fact, ill go get some pointy sticks.....
Servators scribes and fleet crew are all very well but the marines do 99% of the fighting. 1000x1000 thats ONE for every world in the imperium. If they all got together and stood around the equator they would need to stand 40 meters apart. How a thousand of anything can be a force of ANY threat is incomprehensable. I would call it stupid if a thousand bloodthirsters allied with a thousand Carnifexes allied with a thousand Baneblade Super-Heavy Tank's were made out to be as strong as a thousand marines. I like almost all parts of 40k fluff but this is retarded.
