yeah, i'm new to this stuff, been reading about it for a year now, and i have a few models (leaning toward Chaos Space Marines) and its all really cool, i hope to get started right away
but i have a big question..do Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines have different races for each legion? my base for this question is that certain stories and things i've read give some Iron Warriors names like Honsou (which i think i asian) or the Space Wolves being Nordic of some kind or someone at the shop i started going to says that the Salamanders are black, and the White Scars Primarch was mongolian or something, so, i'm thinking to myself "What the hell is going on?" can someone help a newb out?
Space marines are all Human. But they get alot of there look from their primarch who just happened to look like a mongolian. But it also has to to do with what planet they live on. In the case of being races i think they are like that to seperate them all and give them identies.
Yes sir, the touchy subject emerges once again. Looking into my crystal ball, i'll help you out with what i know before this thread gets locked somehow.
White Scars: Asian
Ultramarines: Romans (Caucasian)
Dark Angels: Were exclusively Native Americans in first edition fluff. This is no longer so.
Space Wolves: Norsemen, space Barbarians in my opinion.
Raven Guard: Albino
Iron warriors: It's implied in the Iron Warriors Index Astartes article that Pertabo was black also.
Its a simple matter of genetic mutation. When left isolated for even a few hundred years, populations of any animal start to show phenotypic deviation from the rest of the population. These planets have been seperated from the rest of the Imperium for sometimes 30,000 years or more, theyre bound to have mutated and changed from what humans once were on Terra. I'd say that every planet in the Imperium would count as a different "race". But in the grim darkness of the 41st millenium, such minor differences are considered to be so insignificant that nobody really cares what color your skin or hair is, or any of that. As long as you arent horribly disfigured or a psyker, then youre just considered to be human. Kind of idellic actually. Strange that in the world of 40K racism isnt an issue, even though any other difference is punished by extermination.
This whole thing can be summed up by a line in the book Sourcery by Terry Pratchett (Discworld):lol:Black and white lived in perfect harmony and ganged up on green
ok, cool, thanks guys, that cleared that up
This is going to be shut down like all the other controversial posts. Besides Salamanders and White scars all the other primarchs were essentially white (European/Anglo Saxon/Caucasian looking). There has been much controversy over the Salamanders primarch as to whether he's black or just really tan from living on the volcano world. Which is wierd because every professionally painted salamanders army was/is painted consistantly white by GW professionals. Check out the pics of the primarchs in the Horus Heresy books and sabertooth game cards. Consistantly white or slightly tanned. Besides the previously mentioned primarchs. I suggest this not go any further, since sooner or later the inevitable arguments/flaming will set in. Besides topics like this are against the LO rules. Not to be a stickler but I for one don't want to be banned.
It's more about archetypes than race, as due to an implant (osmodula I think) an SMs skin automatically reacts to the strength of sunlight, unless corrupted (as it is in the Raven Guard, I haven't heard anything about the Salamanders being so). So almost all marines in a desert will be black, whereas those same marines on a nocturnal world will have as pale a skin as they can get.
But characterwise, the differences pointed out above (Space Wolves = Vikings, White Scars = Mongols, Ultramarines = Romans etc) all hold true.
If the Ultramarines are romans, why does Bob have blond hair? Since romans come from italian stock, they don't tend to have many blond people in their population.Originally Posted by Xerxes
I think that the "Race" of the Marine is more attibuted to thier style of fighting.
White Scars = Mongolian...they both used armies of all cavalry.
Space Wolves = Vikings...Thier rules say that thier armies are made up of smaller packs, much like the Vikings had smaller Clans that were brought together to pillage, pluder, and otherwise piss people off.
Ultramarines = Roman...This one, I really don't see. Personally, the Ultramarines have to specific "race" attibuted to them. If someone can argue for it, please do.
Dark Angels = Native American...Ok, the guy did say that this isn't the case anymore, and I agree. I'm not sure how these two are related.
Also, any ideas who the Blood Angels are attibuted too? Maybe an army from the Crusades..
Oh, and of course, Imperial Guard = Soviets...Both throw a lot of bodies at a problem, supported by nice peices of artillery.
Those are the only Chapters I know much about so I'm gonna leave it there.
