OK, I'm old.
In my first steps in the 40K universe I came to like a race that now seems to be looked upon with contempt by the GW staff. In issue 300 (uk) of White Dwarf, the editor made some snide remarks concerning my old favourites and that did hurt...
I found the Squats to be a really interesting army, both fluffwise and in the game. They had terminator armour (kinda), trikes (really cool, remember the skid-rules?) and the living ancestors where also cool. There where also a good story behind them, why they had understanding for the old technology and hatred for greenskin and so on.
They kept the halflings for the Emperors sake! Why did they kill of the squats??? *sob*
i tihnk the point made was they weren't happy with what they came out with for the squats, i tihnk you'll see a far more measured slow and dark gothic development to their new introduction as the Demuirg
I for one never liked the squats.. Just the eldar needed to be distanced from their old incarnation as 'space elves.' The squats needed to either be distanced from the idea of dwarves, or they wouldn't fit into the universe. In the end, I can see why GW scrapped them.
Their successors are indeed the Demiurg, though, and I think from what I've heard they're significantly more original in tone and theme. Don't expect an army to be released any time soon, but you dig up enough fluff on them, it should be possible to use another army list and create an army of the little guys. If you really wanted..
Either that, or use a squat army with guard/marine rules.. I've seen someone else do it.
as far as i know someone from GW actually said to use the ork rules or imperial guard rules if you want to use squats
Guard rules maybe, but Orks? They fight totally differently! Squats were disciplined and slow (except for the engineers guild), Orks are crazy, fast and lightly armoured. How would you explain the terrible BS?
I think SM rules would be just as good as Guard rules for Squats, if not better. After all they had alot of Imperial-style equipment and were T4, plus they were stoic and brave, which would explain thier high Ld and "And They Shall Know No Fear".
I have a couple of squats left over from my childhood, an officer with shades and a cigar, and a medic. I sold all the others coz I didn't like the models, but now I wish I still had my exo-armoured guys, they were pretty rad.
EDIT: Actually that gives me an idea, a small army of surviving Squat mercs/Demiurg based on custom chapter SM rules... Excellent.
I am torn on this issue. I was a collector of Squats back in the day and I had many fun games with them in the backyard with my buddies Demetrius and Laroderic. However, I really like the fact that GW is finally putting some distance between the whole fantasy in space situation.
So in that respect I'm willing to let the Space Dwarves RIP.
If you want to still use the old Squat models, then please be my guest. I have no problems whatsoever with someone who wants to use the Squat models and perhaps use the IG rules for them. I even let one of my friends use the exo armored squats as "ogryn" for his army. He didn't call them Ogryn, but the Ogryn rules came closest to depicting those suits.
I agree with Robotnik, though, the Ork rules are not the rules to be using with Squats. Their fighting style was more more "IG'ish" than Orkish.
Did anyone ever see the chaos squats that some guy made? I found his website and he had some wicked cool conversions, especially his dreadnought. I think im going to go look for it now. Sorry for the vagueness.
I found it they are called the "Doompa loompas". http://www.warmongerclub.com/articles/chaossquats1.html
Demiurg? Never heard of such an army.
Mind informing me on this?
The Demiurg are in BFG.
I don't know much about them, in fact I don't even know why people regard them as being the next "dwarfs in space" when all anyone has ever seen of them are some spaceships, but never the less people do. I hear they are short and squat and love technology, and maybe they are allied with the Tau? Hopefully someone else can fill us in. But yeah, alot of people seem to think the Demiurg are the next incarnation of the squats.
I can see Hourg1ass's point too, though. Some things are just not meant to be in space. Ratlings should at least have boots instead of those stupid hairy hobbit feet!
Yes they are allies of the tau. I looked at the BFG Tau rules list thingy. Doesn't give much fluff though...
By day he fought with sword and shield.....
