Hokay, so I am making an all sisters of battle army, and now that I have an army that CAN have fluff, I'm going to do just that, but i need some help with names, because i really can't think of any good ones... ever!
the basic background of my army is:
They were a very new founding, numbering about 1,000 sisters. They were basically your average army, except didn't have any rare exorcist tanks. One wonderful day, the tyranids (My other army) smashed a small force onto their planet, but they were ready. An epic battle ensued, tyranids running towards their defensive posistions full tilt, etc. The bugs hit their lines, so they sent in the repentia that they had to bog down the guants, while the others retreated to a safe firing position. All their vehicles were destroyed in that fight, their numbers reduced to a mere 100. All the repentia were lost, except for one that they found covered in blood, in a pile of tyranid corpses, crying over her lost sisters, and how she let down her other squad members and her mistress, sad that she couldn't die along with them (cuz repentia are like that) With all the repentia gone, they decided she had repented enough, and actually put made her a veteran superior. She always fought with her eviscerator, and her mindset never changed from that of a fanatic devoted repentia.
now then, their canonness survived all that, and her and the other 100 or so sisters became legends among the imperium. Being almost useless at their size, they went into policitcs and were, to all intents and purposes, famulous-es. (You know what i mean) The canoness debated and requesitioned and gave economical insights for the imperium, etc. for awhile. after awhile, they had recruted enough sisters to get about 400 in numbers, and tired of not doing anything to actually protect humanity, the original 100 took in the sisters and began training again. Instead of making repentias, those who were lazy were merely kicked out of the training program. The original 100 fought in battles along with the canoness, being her celestian retinues, and all the while they keep going to debates, planning political things and whatnot, all the while getting even more power and influence for being heroes, the fact that these women actually go out and kill the enemies of mankind was nice. After awhile, They requesitioned a jump pack for the repentia-born lady. She often would strike out on her own, fighting the most powerful of monsters in single combat, and coming out with but a few scratches. Chaos terminators, Hive Tyrants, Warbosses, she had killed more than after years of combat. The stories of her were amazing, giving the sisters even more influence in the inner workings of the Imperium. The canoness eventually let her train the seraphim, hoping that some of her brutality would rub off on them, but nevertheless, the seraphim, while incredibly effective, just could not pull off the same caliber of stunts that she did. (She still uses her old eviscerator)
now, to reflect all this, i'm using a completely footslogging army, nothing really special about that... all their vehicles were blown up in the fight with tyranids, but they kept all their heavy/special weapons, because who attacks weapons? Soo they've got the bare minimum of battle sister squads, and specialists everywhere. In larger games the eviscerator lady will show up, a 'canoness' (Hey, I'd be inspired if she was there) equipped with 2+ armour and jump pack with master crafted eviscerator.
toatally impractical, i know, but just... i love it! She'll get a 2+ invulnerable and fight off terminators, or become S8 and insta-kill characters, even if i have to sink alot of faith into her for it, it kind of reflects her impervious-ness.
that being said, i would love to hear suggested names for the canonness, maybe some squad leader names, and i was thinking the repentia lady could be so ashamed that the couldn't die with her sisters, or that she let them down that they don't call her by name, but everyones adopts a cool 'nickname'
and if you want to suggest a twist somewhere in the plot, i have a frined who plays Space Marines, but we want to be like... bitter rivals eg) Inquisitions says "Work together on this mission!" so we have to, but then, behind the scenes we just kill each other cuz of hatred!
lol and i might put something in there about my frinds' demon prince; the only one who could actually kill eviserator lady, her faith means nothing against him! he's so evil!
*By evil i mean demonic stature+dreadaxe, wich means no saves against him at all, so he'd splat the terminator-killing CC immortal that she should be, lol*
and most importantly thanks for you time, if i can get all the naming done ill do an actual write up if anyone wants to read that
oh yes, and a amy name would be great too
paint scheam was ripped off the Codex, that one with white armor, gold trimming, chains, etc. and red robes
I'd avoid the word founding, it sounds a bit space marine. Secondly, why were they founded?.. Was it to commemorate a specific martyr, or to guard a sacred site? This needs clarifying before a name can really be chosen for the order.Originally Posted by BullwinkleHmm.. this isn't bad, but it doesn't fit my opinions of the fluff. I thought Sister Repentia had done something really bad (like forgetting to pray before mealtimes) and had set out to find redemption in death. That means you keep fighting until you die, and even if you earn the respect of your battle sisters, they're still aware you're a sinner. I think it would be damn hard to go straight from being a repentia sister to a veteran superior.Originally Posted by BullwinkleI don't think Sisters of Battle do that. That's a Sister Dialogous' job (is that the right order, I can't quite remember.) Most SoBs only get martial training, so their economic insights probably won't be very successful, and the sight of them trying to add up planetary GDPs on their fingers would probably be quite disconcerting to those they 'helped.'Originally Posted by BullwinkleThere are many names which would be good for sisters of battle. The first thing to remember is that they are orphans, named by a bunch of priests who don't have much imagination. Pick any truly generic female English name which wasn't invented in the last 100 years, and you'll be fine.Originally Posted by Bullwinkle
For special names, you could try naming them after virtues. Penitence, Temperance, Chastity, Piety and the like are all good names.
You have some really good, strong ideas. Keep working with them.

Well all this happens over years and years, and i didn't really elaborate on much because i don't have any names down. But people aren't completely stupid, im sure they could get into politics if they haven't anything useful to do... how they get their foothold in the famulous part of the sisterhood is that they're celebrities, so people listened to them.
And does anyone else know how indepentant small orders come around, or if they even exist?
Not sure that entirely works... once you're part of a system in the Imperium, you tend to stay put. The scribes of the Administratum, for example, have their jobs passed down their family line, and have no hope of promotion. And wouldn't a Sister, with all her martial pride and indoctrination, want to uphold the honour of her current order at all costs? I admit they aren't brainwashed as much as marines, but I can't imagine them not having any ingrained martial pride.Originally Posted by Bullwinkle
I'm not sure they are less well indoctrinated than marines. They are raised in Scholar Progenium facilties by priests who instruct them in the specific roles they will go on to fulfill when they join their orders. I'd imagine things like hypnotic suggestion and the other wierder techniques used to indoctrinate marines also apply here.Originally Posted by Xerxes
You're also right, I believe, about martial pride. Sisters of Battle are just that, sisters of battle. They know they best serve the Emperor through slaying his enemies. Why aspire to anything else? Even an order with 100 members can still fight, even if it's merely a single act of martyrdom against a superior foe.
aww dang, cuz i thought i read somewhere that order famulous-es go to battle with inquisitors, so they mustn't be that bad at fighting...
but then, what if they kind of got dragged into it, like after hearing about it, reporters and such kept coming to their temples and disturbing the peace, so the priests just told them to go to a conference so that the presses will leave them alone? But if it's that impossible, i could just leave out them 'retiring' for a few years
Things like Sisters Famulous, Sisters Dialogous and Sisters Hospitaller do accompany Inquisitors in battle. They don't really do much fighting though, and only carry a laspistol for basic self defence. They do other battlefield roles, like calculating weapon trajectories and healing the wounded.Originally Posted by Bullwinkle
Sisters of Battle, as in the power armoured types, are the ones which fight.
Don't have them retire, they could just be exceptionally lucky for their next few engagements, or fight alongside a larger order while they rebuild their strength. If they became quite famous fighting the Tyranids, it seems possible they might have an influx of eager recruits anyway.
