There's plenty of websites out there that have the full background. Basically, Horus was turned by the Chaos gods and rebelled against the Emperor. Nine Legions were with him and as they marched of Terra they committed terrible atrocities along the way such as Tallarn (the Iron Warriors virus bombed the paradise planet into the desert wasteland it is today) and Logres, where the Emperor's Children enslaved a million farmers and killed them all within a week. Horus laid seige to the Imperial Palace on Terra and all that stood against him where 3 Loyalist Space Marine Legions. Horus' forces were on the very brink of victory until Horus disabled the sheilds surrounding his command ship. The Emperor, Sanguinius and Rogal Dorn and a handfull of Space Marines teleported up to Horus' ship. Sanguinius was killed by Horus but this enabled the Emperor to reach Horus and slay him, but at the cost of his own life.

I took the liberty of moving this thread from the Off Topic Section of the forum to the fluff section, seeing as the Horus Heresy is an important part of the Warhammer 40,000 game’s background story. For information on the Horus Heresy, I recommend searching Google for articles. Alternatively, you can have a look at the Wikipedia article on the Horus Heresy. For even more detailed information, you should buy or borrow the three Horus Heresy books, with art and articles on early Imperial history including the Heresy itself. They’re the newest fluff on the Horus Heresy that we’ve got. If you would care to elaborate on the specific subject of disagreement between you and your friends, we could perhaps explain the fluff in more details. However, with the tons of information on the Horus Heresy in general that exist today, recounting the entire event in details is a lot of work, so I hope you’ll forgive me for not providing more information than this. ~Grephaun. |

The fluff that is currently considered valid tells that the Emperor was trapped inside the Imperial Palace by the Traitor forces by the end of the Heresy. The defenders were about to be overwhelmed and Horus victorious when news arrived that the entire Space Wolf and Ultramarine Legions were coming to the Emperor’s aid and were only a few hours away from Terra. Horus realised that if the Imperial forces were to be supported by new troops and ammunition, he would lose the battle of the Imperial Palace, and saw no other way than to challenge the Emperor to a duel. If Horus won, the Imperial defenders would be easily defeated without a leader. Horus therefore set a trap for the Emperor: he lowered the shields of his personal battle barge, mockingly inviting the Emperor to teleport on board to meet him in personal battle. The Emperor, unaware of the imminent arrival of new allies, saw no other way to break the siege on His Palace than by accepting Horus’ challenge. He was teleported on board the battle barge with Sanguinius, Rogal Dorn and Dorn’s personal Terminator retinue, as explained by Zveroboy. However, the psychic powers of Chaos interrupted the teleport and caused the group to arrive randomly all over the battle barge. Each of them began making their way towards Horus, wanting to stop him, but it was Sanguinius that reached him first. The two Primarchs battled, although Sanguinius knew that he could not defeat Horus. He managed to create a chink in Horus’ armour, but was then struck down by the Warmaster and killed. The Emperor found Horus standing over the dead body of Sanguinius, and charged at him. But Horus, supported by all four Chaos gods, was stronger, and forced the Emperor to retreat step by step, finally striking Him to the ground. Then, as Horus was about to deliver the killing blow, a lone Terminator entered the room. Horus, seeing a chance to cause the Emperor further anguish by killing one of His Space Marines right in front of Him, did just that. The Emperor realised that Horus was truly gone, a slave of Chaos and no longer His beloved son, and rose to fight the Warmaster with all the powers He had previously been holding back in an attempt to convince Horus to give up fighting and return to Him. The Emperor struck Horus with the full force of His psychic powers, causing Horus to stumble. Just as the psychic blast of the Emperor struck Horus, the Chaos gods retracted their possession of his body, and Horus realised the horror of what he had done. The Emperor knew this, but also knew that He was greatly wounded and would likely not survive, and in His absence Chaos would possess Horus once again, this time with no one to stop him. So He killed Horus, using the chink in his armour made by Sanguinius, then sank to the ground, mortally wounded, where Rogal Dorn later found Him and brought Him back to Terra. Hope this is detailed enough for you. ![]() ~Grephaun.

I did read a blow-by-blow account of the battle between Horus and the Emperor (goes into gory detail about how Horus physically lifted the Emperor up and brought him down on his knee, smashing the Emperor's back horribly) and the Terminator was not mentioned. I think this was on a site called Mabuskan Republic (now defunkt, account suspended). The Heresy certainly is an epic story, it's why I got into 40K in the first place, the background is just so rich.

Back in the very old days, even before the second edition fluff I believe, there was an Imperial saint named Ollanius Pius. He was raised to sainthood by the Emperor Himself because of his selfless sacrifice during the battle of Terra. The old fluff had the duel between the Emperor and Horus taking place on the ground, at the gates of the Imperial Palace. Horus and the Emperor found themselves suddenly standing face to face while the chaos of the assault on the Palace reigned around them. They charged each other, exchanging mighty blows, until suddenly the Emperor stumbled. Horus raised his bolter to finish off his opponent, but just as he fired it, an unnoticed Guardsman jumped in front of the Emperor, saving Him from the bullet. Seeing this heroic sacrifice, the Emperor got back up and killed Horus, thus ending the Heresy. This I found to be a really cool piece of fluff, since it showed that even a lowly Guardsman could have an influence on the battle between Horus and the Emperor. Ollanius Pius was honoured as the shining example of how a single man can make a difference, no doubt instilling lots of courage in the hearts of Imperial Guardsmen everywhere. In the later editions, however, the battle between Horus and the Emperor was moved to Horus’ battle barge, and it made little sense that a lone Guardsman should be found up there, nor that the Emperor would think to bring him along when there was a bunch of much stronger Space Marines standing ready. So Ollanius Pius was written out of the fluff, and the lone Terminator was added instead. While it is a nice touch that the recent fluff states that the Emperor had his golden armour taken apart after the battle and a shard of the metal added to each Terminator’s armour in memory of the heroic deed of their fellow, it still isn’t as cool as the Ollanius Pius fluff in my opinion. Space Marines save the day with heroic self-sacrifices all the time, while Guardsmen are tremendously overlooked in the fluff. I do believe that Ollanius Pius is still an Imperial saint, though I must admit to not knowing which deed raised him to sainthood. Still, the old fluff remains way cooler in my opinion and, although now obsolete, a great story to be told. ![]() ~Grephaun.

Nice find, quite fascinating. From what I've read of the 2nd Edition fluff there seems to be quite a noticeable change in the style and (maybe) the content of the stories. The only 2nd Ed. book I have is the Imperial Guard one.
