    Wolves of the Inferno

“Do you smell that? That is the smell of burning wolf flesh. Stings your nose, doesn’t it? The smell reminds me of when I was but a lad on Fenris, when we gathered around the campfires of the Great Wolf to feast and drink into the wee hours. I’ll never forget those days, nor my companions – Hejdall, Arn, Sula – three of the greatest friends any man could ask for. But those days are long gone now. Arn is dead; I’ve been locked in this ceramite tomb for years. And Sula? Sula may as well be dead for all the grief he caused amongst the Wolves – it’s too bad he didn’t die that night. He would have saved everyone, including Hejdall and himself, a great deal of trouble.?

    - Thanefell, Space Wolves Dreadnought

The Wolves of the Inferno are a Space Marine chapter with a checkered past and somewhat sordid history. Originally a part of the Space Wolves chapter of Space Marines, their separate destiny was carved out 300 years ago. But any story of the Wolves of the Inferno is a story of their Chapter Master, the infamous Sula.

Sula was born on the Space Wolves homeworld of Fenris, and for as long as he could remember, he wanted to be a Space Wolf. Giant warriors of legend stomping around in great suits of armour with huge guns – what boy wouldn’t aspire to such goals? Sula, though, had a handicap: he was small. Even at fourteen years of age, he barely reached a full five feet in height. Sula, though, had a goal to aspire to: his three best friends Hejdall, Thanefell, and Arn had all agreed to attempt to become Space Wolves that year, and Sula was part of that pact. No matter the outcome, no matter the cost, he would become a Space Wolf.

Throughout the trials, Sula managed to hold his own. Though he did not perform spectacularly, neither did he fail. In the end he was inducted into the great and noble Chapter of the Space Wolves as a Blood Claw and placed in a pack along with his friends.

Over the years, all four of the boys-turned-Marines handled themselves with great honor and courage, each slowly rising through the ranks of the Space Wolves. Most impressive of all was Sula, though. His small stature as a child had made for a fierce survival instinct, and it was this instinct that led him to be a great warrior, and eventually, a great leader. Inducted into a Grey Hunter squad barely a year after the completion of his training and rising to the lofty position of Wolf Guard within ten years, he truly seemed destined for the greatest heights of the Space Wolves.

    But something went wrong.

Fifty years after their induction into the Space Wolves, each of the four friends was separated. Thanefell and Sula had both been inducted into the Wolf Guard – Thanefell served as a Wolf Guard Terminator, while Sula was given command of a squad of Grey Hunters. Hejdall served in Sula’s pack as an assault specialist, while Arn was a meltagunner in another pack. All, however, served in the 6th Great Company of the Space Wolves under the command of Erik Hammerwolf. When the clarion horn rang out over the frozen plains of Fenris one clear morning, they all knew that the time for battle had come. Each of them girded themselves and joined their brothers in the central hall of the Fang. Logan Grimnar himself stood upon the dais, with Hammerwolf at his right hand. The Great Wolf spoke: “The time has come, my brothers, to fight! Our Rune Priests have sensed a gathering darkness ready to erupt from the Eye of Terror, and Hammerwolf has pledged that the Dark Ones will not sully the glory of the Imperium with their presence. Go now, and destroy the cursed traitors!? With a great roar, the entire Great Company broke into a howling cheer, filed into the waiting drop pods, and set forth on their quest to stop the latest Chaos incursion.

Once they arrived at their destination and dropped onto the waiting planet, an obscure world named “Olchek’s Paradise?, they could not believe even their battle-hardened eyes. What was once a fertile and prosperous Imperial agri-world had been reduced to plains of ash – nothing remained. All was as scorched earth and rock. Once the last Marine had been disgorged from the waiting drop pods, though, something terrible happened: the entire landscape erupted in a coruscating pink fire… the minions of Tzeentch were here! Hammerwolf immediately directed reconnaissance of the area, and Sula volunteered his Grey Hunter pack for the task. As they slipped off into the eerily glowing pink night, Sula had a strange feeling that this would be the last time all four friends would ever be all together.

No sooner had Sula’s squad left the landing area than giant bolts of fire began to rain down on the landing area from the direction they had left in – entire packs disappeared in the onslaught, including Arn’s ill-fated Grey Hunter pack. Thinking themselves betrayed by Sula’s squad, the Wolf commanders charged into the night ready to taste blood, with Thanefell’s pack in the lead. They were methodically cut down by ultra-precise bolts of fire, though.

In the meantime, Sula and his pack were beset by hordes of daemons and horrors the likes of which had not been seen since the Horus Heresy – Horrors and Flamers, along with nameless, shapeless forms of destruction, threw themselves at the squad with everything they had, but Sula’s pack stood fast. They directed volley after volley of precise bolter fire into the hordes, until finally the waves stopped. Thinking themselves safe for the moment, Sula called the cease-fire – that is, until one of his pack-mates was ripped to shreds by a behemoth with a Lightning Claw. Chaos Terminators! Sula and Hejdall immediately threw themselves into the fray, each swinging their chainswords as men possessed. How many each man slew that day cannot rightly be counted, but in the end, only the two friends remained alive atop a heap of corpses.

Meanwhile, back at the landing area, the main force of Space Wolves was being hard-pressed. Hammerwolf had already been felled by a great bolt of pink fire, as had most of the Terminators, when out of the mist at the edge of the battlefield charged Sula and Hejdall. Sula howled over the din, “To your weapons, brothers! They are vulnerable – now is the time to strike!? Taken aback for a moment, the surviving Wolves gathered themselves into a mighty phalanx and charged the lines of Daemons surrounding them. The battle that followed was long and epic, worthy of its own saga, so I will not waste your time describing it here. Suffice it to say that the Wolves won the day at the cost of many of their own brethren, including their Warlord.

As the battlefield was cleared and the dead returned to the waiting drop pods, a call came in from the Fang: “Bring us the traitor Sula to stand trial for his crimes against his brothers!? The Wolves present at the battle had seen his bravery and stalwart leadership in action – surely he was no traitor! Sula just scowled, and addressed the men assembled calmly: “We cannot go back to the Fang, for they have formed their opinions. We shall instead serve the Emperor in our own way. Take every man’s armour and paint it black to show the fires that scorched our brothers and our honor. Make the boots and head, eagles and shoulders red to show we have waded in our enemies’ blood as well as our own. We have been forged in the fires of treachery – we are no longer Space Wolves. We are now Wolves of the Inferno.?

They healed their fallen brothers as best they could, took their supplies, and left. On the outbound journey to find the forces that betrayed them, they have changed their army composition to that of a Codex chapter to further distance themselves from their parent chapter. They have faced countless enemies, including the Great Enemy, Tyranids, Necrons, and even other minions of the Imperium out to prove their loyalty by destroying the “traitors? (see ref. M410031.997, Battle with Sisters of the Penitent Flame). None have stopped Sula or his men from pursuing the truth behind their betrayal, and woe betide any who cross their path, for none will be spared the wrath of the Wolves of the Inferno.

    Beautiful, simply beautiful *sniff*
so sad, though, that the imperium isn't made yet, seeing as we are in the year 2000, and it was made some thousand years later....

    Hi parhaius and Milkshake,

    This is great fluff

It would be interesting to see how Extremis Traitoris Legions have actually stayed true to their oath of allegiance to the Emperor.

    The Flame Falcons
    The Soul Drinkers
    The Marauders
    And now
    The Wolves of the Inferno

    Again Great work.

I was wondering about the three hundred years though. Who actually thought of the exact date for the Chpater's origins?

Are they still running or have they wrestled a world away from perhaps the Orks and are now building the new chapter?

Forgot to ask you as well about any pics and are you going to publish your Army stats?

Another thing are you including Wulfen into your army?

Pics I'll sort out soon, I've got a tactical squad all painted, I'm just trying to get a good picture of them...they either are out of focus, or too far away.

As for Wulfen, nooo, my chapter is just misunderstood, not treachorus!

When the Wolves of the Inferno became renegade from the Space Wolves......that would mean they have to recruit somewhere else.

Unless they found or searched for a planet akin to Fenris, their lifestyle would have had to change as well. Where do they now recruit?

As for timeline, are they contemporaries of Ragnar Blackmane or was this actually three hundred years before Ragnar was recruited into the Space Wolves?

Have you decided on their current strength yet? How many marines et al.
