Thanks for reading this in advance. I am sort of new to warhammer 40k. When I say sort of, that means that I played in junior high (I'm a college freshman now) and really loved it. But I sort of got phased out of it as my friends gradually stopped playing. I got reactivated when I bought dawn of war and ... anyways to make a long story short, I began to research WH40k like crazy, I spent hours on wikipedia and games-workshop websites just reading and getting reabsorbed into the universe. As soon as I discovered the 13th company I knew that they were for me. Back in 3rd (and I still have my 2nd ed codex!) I just loved the feel off the cc aspect of space wolves. The 13th company just had so much potential for awesome fluff - the fact that they all struggle and bear the mark of the wulfen, not to mention the mysterious nature of the their crusade against chaos where they dissapeared for what, 10k? - I immediately began researching and thinking of ideas for my own fluff.
As a result I read hours of norse mythololgy and came up with a few broad ideas. I wanted to sort of field test them first and get some opinions.
My idea was to sort of take name my wolf-lord Odin. Odin is such an awesome character in norse myth, he is the god of wisdom and war. He also is somewhat of a christ-figure - which could make for some awesome fluff because Christian or not, you have to admit that in the storyline Jesus was one great hero. At Ragnarok (which I realized is where "Lord Ragnar" comes from) Odin is going to be eaten by the great wolf-monster Fenrir (aka Fenris which is also the SW's home planet). And Norse pro's correct me if I'm wrong, but Odin knows all about his fate from when he gave one of his eyes to know the past present and future from the Norns to know the past, present, and future. Additionally, I want a few of the members of my army to be named after the forces of chaos in Norse Myth such as Loki, Fenrir, Hel, Surt, etc. and those will be the ones who at Ragnarok (or in my fluff's case, "wolftime" when Leman Russ will return) will turn to the forces of chaos and actually betray and slay their own Lord Odin. I think Loki will be a blind rune priest (since Loki in Norse mythology actually was blinded) who leads a group of the Wulfen. Among the wulfen will be Fenrir and Garm. Basically I think that Loki is good now, but will eventually turn to chaos and slowly work up different members of the army against their own master. In the end Fenrir will kill Odin under the direction of Loki as he fully succumbs to the powers of chaos and his wulfen mutation. Odin knows all this will happen, as he knows saw his fate when he gave his eye to some oracles he found during their wanderings. Odin can't bring himself to do anything against those he know will betray him as he views them as sons and brothers, and they have done nothing wrong yet (a minority report some of thing). He only can rely on what he learned as a possibility of what could happen, and not what must come to pass. Until the wolftime, he continues to lead his brothers with love and trust and faith in there inner goodness that he sees. I think the Army name will be The Einherjar - in norse mythology they are the warriors who live in Valhalla and will march 800 strong from each of the 540 doors on the day of Ragnarok only to die fighting Chaos. For my banner I want to have Yggdrasil - the tree of life - being devoured at the roots by a demonic wolf. This will be symbolic of not only the mark of the Wulfen trying to destory them (the pure tree of life) but also the forces of Chaos that are tyring to work against Odin and destory him through his own brotheren. Their original symbol was a the head of an eagle and a wolf attached back to back, but this changed after Odin visited the oracles.
I know its a rather rough sketch, but what do you think? Comments? Suggestions? Please let me know. Also, I have a question that if anyone could answer, I would be greatly appreciateive. Since each wolf Lord leads one of the great companies, and each SW warrior also bears the symbol of his great company - is what I am doing even legit and how?
Thanks so much for reading and all comments are greatly appreciated.
Hey mim(your name i trust you'll understand lol)
I think you've got a good storyline here, as a space wolf collector and fanatical fluff lover as well, i would suggest you read more, remember knowledge is power lol....only if you want but, if you haven't already, get the eye of terror codex and the space wolf codex, read through it all, get as much fluff on space wolves, and space marines i general to get an understanding on hot they work.
Now, I'm not sure how the 13th company work exactly, but this whole Odin seeing oracles and changing the insignia and visions seems a little funky, by all means it sounds cool, and could work...it just doesn't seem 40k fluffy...thats probably my only concern, the betrayal thing is cool, almost exactly like the story of Night Haunter, primarch of the Night Lords during the heresy. very good. But yeah, its just the oracle thing man, i mean, where is Odin going to find a non chaos physcer within the eot.
But yeah, good work and welcome back to this unending thirst for fluff knowledge lol.
hey its a brilliant story i think as a collector of both space wolves and 13th company i think its cool and it would work well as they been stuck in the eye of terror for about 10,000 years i mean visions are sure to happen right? love the names as well its actually similar to my 13th company fluff but yea its cool and it works really well that you have gone throught all the norse myths for the other characters you could have the lord wolf guard to turn traitor as they the people he would most trust, i would have a wolf preist change though as they the most religious and least likely to turn but yeah thats cool really like it
Remeber men, we are fighting for the ladies honour, which is a damsite more than she did
That is awesome.
I'm surprised I didn't come up with this kinda of allegory before. It's really quite simple. I say go ahead. It's cool enough that even if it was wrong, I wouldn't care. You've clearly read up on your stuff enough so that you know what you're doing.
Now, all you have to do is actually collect the army...
