Hi, its been a while since I have done much GW related, and have recently gotten back into writing. I'd really like to write about space marines, but I don't know much about them. I know they are religious fanatics, but if anyone can give me information from squad sizes to daily duties away from war to the day of battle, it would be greatly appreciated... I'd buy the codex, but have no money and reallly want to crack on with writing... thanks for your time.
Well the GW site has quite a bit on SM's, particularly for the daily rituals bit. Squads are split into three types: tactical (all round), assault (close combat, normally wear jump-packs) and devestator (heavy weapons support), and normally consist of 10 members one of whom is the sergeant, who may or may not be a veteran (member of the 1st company). Squads can also be split into 5-man combat squads in certain situations.
There's a lot of variation between chapters as well obviously.
Most chapters pray before battle, normally led by a chaplain.
I assume you know the diferrent specialist roles within a chapter, but if not they are:
Chaplain; spiritual leaders.
Librarians; record keepers and battle-field psykers
Techmarines; maintain chapters equipment, members of the machine cult as well as the chapter's cult
Captains and chapter master; pretty obviously lead companies and the chapter.
There are also many (several thousand at least) servants/serfs attached to a marine chapter, they are generally failed marine applicants or hereditary positions. Tend to be fanatically loyal to the chapter.
Edit: Welcome to the librarium by the way.
Revenge is a dish best served with mayonnaise and those little cheesy things on sticks.
