1. I know choas doesn't have storm bolters, so where they invented after the Heresey? Where they actually invented, or was an STC for them found? Are new weapons invented, or existing weapons improved, by the Adeptus Mechanus?
2. Shotguns are, without a doubt, one of the worst weapons in the game. In reality shotguns have 2 main types of shot, buckshot/birdshot and slugs. The shotguns in 40K are probably shooting buckshot, because that is a bunch of pellets, so it is short-ranged and not very strong. But why dont they shoot slugs? The slugs would be good(i think), beacuse they would be strong and they also can go farther. So why arent slugs used? If they were what type of rules/stats would they have?

For the Storm Bolters, there's the fact that chaos marines used to be loyalists and they had storm bolters then. Also don't forget that everytime they fight loyal marines, they aren't prideful enough to steal weapons and equipment from the enemy.
As for the shotguns, they are fireing slugs since it's easier to penatrate armor, but the weapon itself is ancient, and the armor mostly used is designed to be impervious to it. So thats the reason for it.

Probably the same stats as a stubber except they'd get less shots off. Perhaps if they came up with some sort of shotgun template with different distance zones it might be a bit better, i.e anything 0-6" away automatically takes a hit at S5, 7-12" is S3, and so on; that seems more in-keeping with the principle of shotguns.Originally Posted by Alt+F4
Not too sure about storm bolters, afaik they've been around for a good while although even if they hadn't it wouldn't be difficult to nick one off some 'asploded Marine/ Dreadnought surely? That's a strange one
I believed the chaos SM had combi-bolters and thats that. But yah....lack of weapons means stealing stuff from defeated enemies.

Chaos has storm bolters. They call them combi-bolters. It's the exact same weapon.
Shotgun rules really belong in the SM forum, or the Rules Discussion section.

Nope you are all wrong when it comes to Chaos marines and storm bolters....
Basically back in the Pre Horus Heresy ddays when the weapons for terminator armour was still being developed Terminators were armed with boltguns. They complained that the load bearing capabilities of the terminator armour wasn't being fully utilised, hence a number heavier of weapons were created, these included the Reaper Auto Cannon and Heavy flamer as well as combi-weapons which combinded two weapins together. The most successful of these combinations was the twin bolter combination which was found to be the most efficient less chance of jamming etc.
After the Heresy many of the Terminator weapons were developed further the Reaper Autocannon became the Assault cannon and the combi bolter became the storm bolter. Weapons that are still used to this day by the loyalists.
Essentially then 10,000 years have passed and the Imperium has made some minor improvements to the guns it was using in the Heresy the choas marines haven't.
This background can be found in the 2nd edition chaos codex.

Also, Storm Bolters were in development just before the Heresy, Horus had a prototype version on his Talon.

A storm bolter is more sophisticated than a combi bolter (It's smaller, and given its 'assault' nature probably produces less recoil), just as an assault cannon is more sophisticated than a reaper autocannon. However, it also requires more effort to maintain storm bolters and assault cannons than it does to maintain reaper autocannons and combi bolters. For this reason, chaos don't use storm bolters. They couldn't maintain them effectively in their current position.
40k shotguns do use slugs.. Check out necromunda and inquisitor for a more sophisticated portrayal of shotguns and the numerous, hilarious and deadly types of ammo they can be adapted to fire. 40k, for the sake of rules complexity, uses very minimalistic shotgun rules. They're really not that bad either, considering the equivallent of a modern assault rifle only has twice the range and the same stopping power.
