Hey, i'm in the process of creating my own Space Marine chapter and was looking for some ideas to help improve their background.
What i've got so far is: they are the Fists of the Rising Suns, using the Imperial Fists chapter logo. Their colour scheme is all white armour with red shoulder trim, kneepads and of course, hands. They operate from their space fleet (or one very large ship?), due to their homeworld being destroyed in battle with the forces of chaos. This battle also led to the chapter suffering horrendous losses, which they've never recovered from. This is why the chapter now operates with only 6 specialised companies.
As background, i like the idea of them living by some sort of warrior code (samurai/ klingon style). I also need to find a way of working in why they don't have any librarians and don't use them (personally i don't like them- so i got rid).
Because i chose to get rid of librarians, i thought i'd even up the chapter with the idea of their forgemaster/ techmarines etc having an amazing amount of knowledge and a very good forge. Which in turn means my chapter always seems to appear with new looking weapons, armour and vehicles. Not to mention some "chapter-specific" weapons. (I like the idea of a marine with nunchuka's or a batleth style weapon)
These are my ideas, but you guys are better at this sort of stuff than me, so i hand it over to you's.
I'm not the world's greatest on the subject of Space Marine fluff, but you could always tie in their aversion to Librarians with the destruction of their home world; for example, maybe the Chaos invasion was triggered by a rogue psyker, breeding a deep distrust and resentment towards psykers in any and all forms within the surviving brothers. Any Librarians they had were killed during the attack, and due to their newfound loathing the Chapter are in no rush to replace them.
I like the idea of Chapter-specific weapons too, the lack of Oriental style weapons in 40K is in need of addressing . Also, if it's martial-arts themed, consider naming the Chapter Master Chu'knor Iss ^^
Well if you want to be rid of librarians then there are three ways of doing so:
1. just dont use them.
2. take the disadvnatage that disalows the use of librarians.
or 3. say that in your fluff your a succesor chapter of the imperial fists, all of which have very little faith in psykers to begin with.
As long as you dont make new rules for the new gear, just using them to represent different versions of certain things, then there is no problem there. Though if your aim is to make new gear, weapons, or vehicles then your out of luck outside of VDR...

I hate to say, but that name made me laugh.. it sounds like some strange Yukio Mishima style rightist society, especially since you're using the modern Japanese flag colours.
I'd love to see a really good samurai inspired chapter. GW have borrowed so much from western Chivalry when making marines, after all, I think you'd do well to borrow stuff from the Japanese equivallent. Though it would mean modelling a lot of swords.
Otherwise, from what you've written, I'd suggest you hammer out a little more detail about their honour code. Also, where does it come from? Where do they draw their recruits, and why would they be hung up on honour so much (more than other space marines?)
Well, if you don't like the name- could you possible give me a better one? Also the reason that i've went into more detail about the honour code is because it was just at the first stages of development, and i hadn't thought that far ahead.
The other idea i had was to create a Predator style chapter. But i don't know how i'd go about doing it.
All ideas would be helpful- as i just can't settle with an idea.
Well, you want a sort of bushido-themed Marine army. That's not done as often as you might think. It's perfectly acceptable. Someone on FF.net wrote some fanfiction of his chapter called the...Crimson Somethingorother's, and they were a very good depiction of Japanese-themed Space Marines. And he never even used the word 'katana'.
The themes of the chapter should be: they focus on close combat because it's more "honourable" than ranged, they rarely resort to stealth or trickery since they believe in the rules of warfare, they don't execute prisoners/endanger civilians/betray allies etc, and they look upon traitors like they were Tzeentch incarnate.
As for operating from a chapter fleet; if they only have six companies, they would have one Battle Barge and a set of Strike Cruisers, no more than two or three. The Barge would be their main base of operations. Since it's a slower ship, it'd reserve itself for major operations, and the cruisers would be the "arms" of the Chapter.
What Heathen said about psykers is a good idea. Use that.
When making chapter-specific weapons or vehicles, remember a few guidelines:
1. Try to make modifications existing vehicles/weapons (i.e, make a variant of the Razorback that has a different main gun, or a Rhino with more front armour) rather than making an entirely new vehicle with different rules.
2. Remember to keep it all balanced.
3. Have a specific use in your mind when you make the vehicle/weapon. So, you want a weapon. Think "it's good in close combat" then thing how it's good in close combat - does it make the wielder stronger, like a Sword of Secrets, or does it make him faster, like a Familiar?
4. Avoid too many new things. One or two is easily enough to make your chapter unique.
5. Look at other Chapter's unique vehicles for inspiration - the Baal Predator, or the Land Raider Helios, or the SW Leman Russ.
6. And keep it all balanced.
And the name seems fine.

Thanks mate, i was about to give up on that idea and try and develope the "predator" themed chapter. But now i'm gonna carry on with this idea. Its amazing what you guys on here can come up with likes. Once again, thanks.
