I have been doing alot of reading about ninjas lately and was inspired.
I have a Smurf chapter (already painted) without fluff and have been meaning to write something, at least a general idea.
So I'm thinking they could be a recently founded chapter from Raven Guard stock.
Their main colors are dark blue and green trim because their homeworld only has night time.
However the do change their armour's color to match their surrondings, being careful not to mess with the chapter symbol. (kind of like the way the Death watch do)
they are known for their skill at guerillia warfare, fear tactics and of course sneaking about.
Because of this they tend to fight up close alot, but will kill from a distance if it serves their perposes better.
They also have a special hatered for the Tau, and any humans that join them.
I picture this chapter operating something like this.
They get word of some eastern frontier Imperial Guard commander switching to the Tau's side and instantly react.
first they send in one or two groups of marines who slowly work sneak their way behind enemy lines getting as close to the leader as possible and when given the signal the act.
Just imagine a the commander looking over maps with his officiers and suddenly two marines just materilize from the shadows and gun them all down with silenced boltersand then disappear again into the shadows. And when the guards come in to check it out all they find is their leaders hung up with bolt wounds and a note saying [I]we're coming[I] or something like that.
So what do guys think. i used to not like scouts but with the new plastics out I wouldn't mind a few squads.
Though power armour would add the fear factor.
All replies are appreciated.
Sounds like a decent start, any heretic who crosses over to the Xeno deserves to be cleansed. Just out of curiosity, can a bolt pistol be scilenced, don't the bolts explode on contact? Prehaps they could hang him and light him on fire? Go ninjas!
In an Imperium of a million worlds, what is the death of one world in the cause of purity?
He who allows the alien to live,
shares its crime of existence.
I'm not sure a silenced bolter is possible. The entire point of the bolter is that it's loud.
Maybe they can be really quiet, then suddenly explode into a thunderous storm of bolter shells and missiles, then stop and disappear again.

The space marines are a noble kind, and they are ALL founded on the principle on if they can be seen they can be rightously feared...
You could do it, but not fluf-wise...

There are SM chapters that are quite sneaky, foremost of which is the now traitor Alpha legion. However many SM chapters still use stealth quite to their advantage. And for the record there is a silencer for the bolter, its one of the upgrades for a DW kill team, but it practically turns the bolter into a sniper weapon.

You know ninjas were actually group of militant peasants, nothing to do with stealth at all.
As for silenced bolter shells, they exist, and they're called Stalkers. However, they're incredibly rare and usually only available to the deathwatch, Inquisitorial forces and the like, not regular space marines.

Thanks for the replies keep 'em coming
I am glad to hear that you guys think the idea might work.
The whole silenced bolters were just a spur of the moment idea, not really a key fluff factor.
The key there was they materilized from the shadows, in the enemy HQ with out being detected.
I'll have more soon I've got to go now.
My only fear of creating ninja Space marines is the consequences of such an action. Soon we will have pirate SM, Cyborg SM (which i guess we already have with the Iron Hands) and cowboy SM.
While it sounds very cliche with the whole note thing. I suppose you could just go heavy on scouts. Just keep in mind that space marines are like 8 ft tall have heavy power armor and are immensly bulky. Nothing about them is built for stealth. But go for it if it makes that game more fun for you. Just don't add wierd little things like invulnerable save for having smoke pellets, or the Terrain around the ninja SM is counted as difficult terrain as the ninja have spiked the floor hurting the feet of anything not in power armor. =P
:ninja: have fun :ninja:

wouldn't 'stealthy' SMs be the scouts?
your fluff might work if you got bunch of scout minis. They could be the infiltration force, the fully armoured marines could be the hammerstroke coming down behind them. Some marine chapters have full brothers that are still in the 10th Co. (at least that's what it says in the Insignum). Just form your chapter (as you described) around fast attack and a strong 10th Co.
