I recently picked up a copy of the new Tau Codex. As I was leafing through, something struck me; I've often heard it say that Tau are genderless and basically everyone is the same - but Shadowsun is consistently referred to as a she. So I was wondering if anyone could clue me in on Tau gender issues and the like - is "she" technically as much a "she" as all the other Tau, or is it simply minor physical differences, or what?
A second question - on one page in the background section towards the beginning of the book, there is an illustration of a Tau (not sure what caste, there's a drone with him and he's wearing shoulder armour so could be Fire, but appears to be engaged in diplomatic relations so could be Water), a person who appears to be a governor of some sort, and oddly enough, a space marine of the Imperial Fists chapter, clearly high ranking by his tabard and furs, standing on a platform and talking. Anyway, I was just wondering what context this picture was in. Basically, i assumed space marines would be unwilling to even talk to Xenos, even in the interests of diplomacy, more interested in purging them than anything. It mentions a "peace" in Tau Empire - so does this mean that the Imperium is leaving the Tau alone? That they're tolerating them, or simply pulling out due to losses? It just seems to go against all the fluff of the xeno-hating imperium i'm used to, but maybe someone can enlighten me?
The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people are awesome and can kick your ass.
"War does not determine who is right - only who is left."
That's the Ethereal Aun'O Tolku K'yna talking to captain Tealos and his advisor Raphael Palmatus concerning the battle for Nimbosa. Impirial forces are losing, and the empire has started protacting negotiations to stall the advance of the Tau under the flag of a cease fire. The imperial reinforcements are due in several months, in which time the tau will be victorious on Nimbosa.

The Tau do have two genders male and female. Space marines will talk and on the rarest occasions ally with aliens.
When the Tyranids attacked Ichar the Eldar were there and farseers debated with the Ultra marines on the best line of defence.
